No idea who Kenyon Furlong is (sounds fictional, doesn't it?), but he was 6 wins from 13 starters heading into today's 8th at Delaware, and he's now 7 for 14, with an $80 winner to his credit.

Have you met his cousins Marvin Milkshake and Jerry Juice?

Just kidding. Ha, ha. I'm sure he's just placing his horses where they can win.

Beware the Furlong Pole!

Forgot to post a monster female trainer at Hastings. L.T. McCarthy. 11-for-30, last I checked.

It looks like this guy has been an owner and breeder for some time, but I can't find anything on his training career.

He has been around since I started my database Jan 2002

record is 4 for 27 in 2002
1 for 19 in 2003
0 for 15 in 2004
7 for 15 in 2005

IT'S A GIVEN 4 WINS
DON'T BE LONG 2 WINS
IT'S IN DA CARDS 1 WIN

He owns all his horses....been at Del almost exclusively

Maybe he plays "Where the Turf Meets the Surf" for them at night.

I can see one horse suddenly becoming good and winning a few races.

It's harder to see see all the horses suddenly becoming good and winning races.

Then the $80 bomb.

All this from a trainer who has one win in the previous two years.

It'd be a surprise if it wasn't Delaware Park.

ken furlong is a low profile trainer who has raced in the midatlantic for years. he usually has no more than ahandful of horses at a time. sometimes they ran under the name of ronnie houghton, probably for license purposes when they shipped to another state.

the dam of the horse in question is walking in da sun who was owned and trained by furlong. i remember her well. she was a 5f turf specialist and she was as game a mare as you will ever find. she won many a race on the del park lawn. in her last start she was in foal but she ran and won anyway beating the boys to boot. the name of that foal is shades of sunny who is also a fine turf sprinter who has won a few stakes and i think
over 250k. she's had another foal who has also won on the turf, but i believe she was barren last year.

i don't think mr. furlong is cheating. i think he's just having a good and lucky year. and when i see a foal of walking in da sun skipping over the delaware green...well...i ain't surprised.

Excellent post, Cash. I was going to post something similar but you did it quicker, and better.

This is a good example of why horseplayers shouldn't be quick to label a guy without doing some research. It's also a good example of how the true cheaters make it difficult for all. Furlong is as honest as the day is long. He only has a few horses and they're running to some excellent pedigrees.

5 for 61 3 years

7 for 15 this year

I do not want to call him a cheater but that's more than lucky. He's doing something different. The question is "what"

Furlong has 306 total starters to his credit since Jan. 1, 1995 with 36 winners (12 %).

He is 15 / 143 in sprints (10%), 5 / 98 in routes (5%) and a strong 16 / 65 in turf races (25%).

And seven of those 36 total winners have come in the last 365 days out of only 16 total starters...six in dirt sprints and one on turf.
