Report: Police shoot gunmen

Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on contractors crossing a bridge to make levee repairs, The Associated Press reported.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley told AP that police shot at eight people who had guns, killing five or six.

The Army Corps of Engineers told AP that 14 contractors escorted by police were fired upon while crossing the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

Corps spokesman John Hall told AP the contractors were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help fix a breech in the 17th Street Canal.

Initial AP reports had wrongly indicated that the contractors themselves were shot by police; no other details were immediately available.

Who the hell is shooting at these people? Has the world gone mad?

Let's see how we can blame this on Bush....

This is defnintely Bush's fault! If only we had 556,000 more troops at our disposal to send in, they could have relieved the overworked, overstressed and underpaid NOPD.

Prediction: This will get plenty of press, whereas the murderous snipers and looters have gotten very little bad press from the media.

In fact, some militant-sounding black guy on FNC last night (maybe someone here might recall his name?) actually took on an apologetic role for the looters and snipers. I wonder if he would have been so kind and generous if these had been white thugs?

What a sad state of affairs it is when our troops must turn out in full battle gear to aid our citizens on our soil.

They turned loose a bunch of people in jail down there; just turned em loose. Then I read they raided all the gun stores; so it's prob these criminals causing most of the probs.

Ahh..no wonder that black guy on FNC was so sympathetic toward them. They were just venting a little er...pent up steam. Perfectly understandable.

Umm, the police shot contractors who had guns to defende themselves. It shows a lack of training, discipline, and leadership on the part of the NO PD. Trust me, if I shot everyone in Iraq I saw with a gun, there would be a lot more dead people there. Another example of a city that wasn't functioning before this happenned.

According to this, none of the contractors were killed. I hope this is true.

Okay, I should no first reports are wildly innacurate. I'll wait till tomorrow to pass judgement. Obviously if they were defending the contractors than they were in the right.

:D Unfortunately this isn't the first time this has happened. Watts, anyone? The Lincoln Draft riots? The only way to quell these animals is Lincoln's Rule--- shoot to kill and be sure they're DOA. Kinda like flushing the toilet to get rid of the 198920 and the smell. :D

First response in any riot is shoot to kill and leave the bodies where thy lie.

Now, where is Ljb demanding the we get out of this quaigmire?
Didn't Bush have an exit strategy before he sent in troops?

And then balling up those who can't/won't leave and still leave them that 15-20 foot below sea level city! Put them all inside hot smelly buildings and don't feed them!

Gee, was the City of New Orleans hoping that all the Consession Stands in the stadium would open, that the ushers and cleaning crews would already be in there, etc. Can't cook 20,000 hot dogs with no running water, little electricity and the gas likely shut off.

According to this Newsmax story, the Gov of LA hasn't even declared a state of emergency!

I'm not at all suprised. After hearing her speak, I was left with the impression that this gal's head was filled only with air. There was nothing in her speech or demeanor that inspired confidence or hope. The people of LA should impeach her on the grounds of gross negligence and total incompetency.

Can you begin to imagine the mainstream media feeding frenzy that would have ensued long before now if this bubblehead had been a Republican?

Bush declared a state of emergency a day or two before the hurricane even got there.

With huge amounts of damage to the whole multi-state region, not just to NO itself, a lot of the stories are being overshadowed. There were tons of people that were still in their homes, clingning to rooves, hoping not to drown. Those folks were going unfed and unwatered, while being exposed to the elements and the risks of drowning if they were swept away or if their house they were sitting on collapsed. These people were at serious risks. Ideally, the people in the Superdome and the Convention Centers were supposed to be physically protected. It was the situation inside those shelters that made them dangerous. But they were FAR from the only people in need in the region.

One thing I heard frequently from those interviewed in the shelters is that they were getting no news, no instruction, etc. Perhaps with news updates (heck, print up some handbills if you have to) they people could have know they were far from the only ones suffering, and might have calmed the tensions that led to rioting inside the shelters.

So glad many of those shooting at the contractors trying to help the situation were shot dead. Imagine having to SAVE those same people that are shooting at you. Hear people on rooves with guns were shooting at the rescue copters, demanding they be saved first. The copters had to leave the area, delaying not only they, but their neighbors in hardship's rescue. I can't help but think if I'm flying the copter, that those shooting at me would be the LAST people I'd attempt to save. What seriously messed up people to shoot rescue workers and the engineers.

I should add that the shooting of rescue workers, police officers and firefighters is not new. There have been problems in the City of Chicago with firefighters responding to calls in or near housing projects that have been shot at and/or hit. Sometimes people with a gun and a grudge(for various reasons) see firefighters as a part of the city and/or law forces and they try taking their anger out on them.

Strange, but before the hurricane hit, my biggest concern when I saw that they were putting people into the Superdome was that it would hold up during the storm. I was initially worried that the stadium not withstanding the storm or becoming submerged and thousands dying inside the stadium itself.

Silly me.
