has absolutely no shot to win this grade 1 million dollar race. none, nada, zip, hello,good-bye, over and out. at no point in this race, which will be contested at 1mile and a 1/4, will he even look like he's got a shot. as soon as the gates open he'll go out, do his stalk and after 5/8ths bruce headly and gainsway farms will realize that all they did was to throw their horse away in a race that makes no sense for him to even be in.

the horse dominated his last race in the g1 swaps stakes for 3yo at 1 1/8 in a 6 horse field. so far as i can see he's a very good classy type 3yo. i say 'type' because as of 'yet' he's hasnt done anything this good.

polish times 39 races 13 wins

choctaw nation, oh gee he won the g2 san diego h. twice and got 3rd in the g1 6000000 dubai at 1 1/4 in a 12 horse field. he only got beat by roses in may and dynever in that one

borrego, oh he only got 2nd, 4th 3rd and 3rd in the g1 holly gold cup, g2 califorian, g2 mrvn lry and the g1 santa anita h.

lava man, never heard of him

super frolic, 5yo is 10 for 29 and not in claimers

msique toujours, won a million dollar race at gulfstream n the lead in jan.

congrats got 3rd, 5th, 2nd, 3rd and 1st in a g1, g1, g1, g2 and g2

island fashion is a 2million dollar winning mare who got 2nd and 2nd the last two in the g1 john mabee and the vanity

ace blue just got beat a lenght in last by choctaw nation won the g2 marvin leroy 3rd ack in may

and hey what can you say

perfect drift blew in for his 2nd try at the pacific classic where he got beat a length by pleasantly perfect last year. my, my this horse dont run in anything with less then a $400,000 purse and his last was only a tuneup while drawing out to a 4 length win after being steadied on the far turn in the the $300,000 g2 washington park hdc. i guess you can throw in the 3 1/2 million dollars he's earned as well.

surf cat? wrong. i'll even take bets that once headly and gainsway farms sober up either before or after the race they both turn to each other and say "who the hell's idea was this"?

Maybe you can 'lay' him, pardon the expression, on Betfair. Polish Times won't be 'running' as he got dusted in an allowance race today. Maybe if Sarge went on a permanent furlough, this horse could do some good.

What interests me is Imperialism in the 7-furlong race. Three furlongs shorter than the Classic, and Mulhall knows ten furlongs are too many, unless she wants the career of Borrego. I think Choctaw Nation might like seven furlongs, but the Classic is worth a shot, as the jury is still out on him, although don't cj's #'s say he's too slow for these? Somebody posted a love letter to Surf Cat, and when I mentioned CN, someone said his figs were low, as I recall.

Too bad - he's got a bright future ahead.

I see plenty of early speed in the race which should set it up for those coming from off the pace. Island Fashion, Lava Man, Congrats, Surf Cat will be on or near the front early. Let's see if CNak guns Island Fashion out of the gate to take the early lead down the stretch the first time and to try to keep PVal down on the rail and to save ground in the turn.

The two closers which should benefit from the too-fast early fractions are Choctaw Nation and Perfect Drift (inside-outside). It's going to depend upon some racing luck for both of these since they'll be weaving through traffic coming into the top of the lane. Two horses that interest me for exactas are Borrego (12 ML) and Super Frolic (30 ML). Borrego should get a middling trip with the ability to be right there when the running really counts but I don't see him being able to close better than the 2 or 12. Super Frolic also has a good turn of foot middle and late but will be too far back for me to consider on the win-end. Super Frolic could benefit by getting KDes as the replacement rider. Either the 3 or 6 could pick up a piece of the purse.

Well actually, technically, mathematically if he races in there he has at minimum 1% chance of winning.....lol.....Nobody belongs in that race except perfect drift...this is the weakest G1 million race i've seen in a looooong time....drift should float away from this bunch of wannabeeeeees....but that 3yo might hit the board....watch him.

their definently taking their shots with surf cat today and some may say why not? but i say what for? he's the only 3yo in there and i think he's going to need a little more seasoning to get a mile and a 1/4 with these proven elders today. if the race were for 3yo's only then i'd say yeah he can probably go ahead and get the mile 1/4 because theres not many 3yo's with lesser class that would be able to stand out against him at this distance. he's certainly not the class of this field at this distance.
this race will certainly season and acclimate him to the more rigid distance and class levels he'll be facing in the future aka when d wayne got charismatic seasoned, acclimated and beat at the mile and a quarter distance which happend to be the race before he won the KD and the preakness.
it might be a pretty smart move as iam sure they have a few more races picked out with 4 more months left in his 3yo racing season as iam sure their definently thinking of a spot in the breeders cup.
maybe i spoke to soon when i said the connections must be drunk but to win this race today it just aint going to happen. give em maybe 5th today but not much more then that.

I'm not betting on SURF CAT, but he will be on my ex. tickets. It looks like a wide open nice betting race, I don't care if any of these horses have done anything, it's still a great betting race. I'll take a shot on ACE BLUE(my key) and BORREGO. Mix them in with some of the others. Hell it's only ink and paper, i'll make more this week ( I won't be saying that when busting my ass off at work, asking myself why in the hell did I bet those horses in the Pacific Classic).

I'll tell you what, FREE when out and had the balls to say that about SURF CAT ( which I don't think he picked anyone in the race ) I'll go out and say CHOCTAW NATION will be the horse I'm tossing, he'll be in the top 3 in betting I think.

Hank Goldberg called that one right! 11-1?

BTW, is Trevor taking calling lessons from Tom Durkin? I could not understand one single word he said the whole stretch run. Did he just have sex for the first time furing the race? I can't think of any other reason to be screaming unintelligibly like that! P*** poor call IMHYOCO.

Uhoh....Lava Man not looking good after the race....might be hurt. Hope not.

Tom,
The scuttlebutt is that Vic Stauffer is in the booth at Del Mar, smoking a cigarette and purring to TDen,"Was it good for you?"

The guy on Mike Willman's show has been picking Borrego every race, but today he switched to Congrats. Toby Turrell, I think?

From the "where are they now" file:
Imperialism and Borrego, also-rans in the 2004 T.C., won the big races today. Maybe it's a blessing that they didn't do much after May of last year. Otherwise, thay might have retired.

what we have here is not a failure to 'cmunicate but instead we have a classic subconcious fruadian or in this case a foediododian slip of the natural tounge where when one's cry for release to be spared the frustration of having to listen to a man having sex for the first time during the call of a million dollar race reaches a point that when a verbal attempt to describe this emotion ones words simply can not keep up with ones mind or thoughts on the matter and we spurlt out a word that has the combination of a second word attached to it. we've all done this before, usually after a few tugs off the jack daniels.
so lets play what the hell was tom really thinking or better yet saying in his mind when spelling out the word "furing" ?
oh awright ill give you a hint

did he just have sex for the first time furing the race

ok we all know that tom ment to use the word "during' instead of 'furing' the race but i think the key to unlocking this shishkabob is figuring out what word could it be that begins with f and when staged right before the word 'race' would sound a little more fitting and make a more complete sentence to a man who had his money riding on a horse describing a pornographic situation taking place in the race callers booth.

But, as the tree falling without witnesses doesn't fall in a verifiable sense, isn't 'pornographic' a misnomer for a situation unfilmed? And it was meant as a metaphor. The URGENT call is a sort of sublimation of the sexual act. Otherwise, what's a meta for?

My first impression after the two races was that we may have 2 serious threats in the BC, but the more I thought about it, Borrego and Imperialism won because of the obscene early pace in both of these races. 22 and change and 44 and change in Imperialism's win and 22 and change and 45 and change in the Pacific. Lava Man managing to hold on for show was amazing to me because that horse was completely baked. Looked like he was going to have to be vanned off from exhaustion after the race. I doubt we see him for some time. Of the 2 of these that I was more impressed by though, I would have to go with Imperialism. Coming back off that long layoff and still taking the win, even though the pace totally favored him is still a nice accomplishment. I'm hoping he can get back to his old form so we will have another legit handicap horse.
