"Joe G"

Been meaning to ask Joe?

If the spelling of your last name begins with guff?

--First, say the THREAD TITLE fast, three times in a row. Kind of a tongue twister, as they say.

--0 for 4 today. Not good. Closest I came to hitting a big-priced winner was the 8th race. Now That's Art finished second at 15-1 on the toteboard. Alas, close doesn't count.

--Melman and Joe...I see you fellows didn't fare out much better on the horses you liked at Harrington Raceway this day. Oh well, maybe things will go better the next time we try to pick some winners at this track.

"Where's Harrington"

from September 10, 1952 Harness Horse magazine:

Harrington, Del. Races
By A. E. Leatherman
The fall meeting at Harrington, Del., sponsored by the Kent & Essex Racing Association, had a grand opening night on Thursday, September 4. A good supply of horses were on the grounds ready to compete for Race Secretary George Enslen, who had arranged for nine events. The daily double combination Brochton and Wicomico Ted, paid the lucky ticket holders $206.60. The evening's mutuel handle was $76,041. Good tight stretch battles prevailed and several of the winning horses acquired new race records. Among them was the two-year-old colt Wicomico Ted, by Ensign Hanover-Neshaminy, by Abbedale, owned by Walter H. Farlow of Pittsville, Md., which went in 2:094/5. The veteran trainerdriver John Mallalieu, won his fifth "straight victory with the trotter Merry Scot 4, 2:083/4, by His Excellency, owned by Jonas Shoemaker of Spring City, Pa., and Irene Gallon 2:083/5, by Bill Gallon, scored her sixth successive victory for owner E. E. Nelson of Harrington, Del.
On Friday night, September 5, the management was favored with pleasant weather conditions and a good attend-ance to enjoy the evening's entertainment and no one had any reason to be disappointed with the racing contests. The New Jersey owned pacer Memorial, with Ed Kelly, doing the teaming, won the Class C Pace, one of the feature events , mile in 2:07 a new record. The veteran trotter Belina Hanover 2:05, by Dean Hanover, was the winner of Class C Trot, for trainer-driver Tom Lewis, trotting a mile in 2:083/5 . The mutuel handle was $64,004.
On Saturday night a total of $100,953 passed through the "Tote Machine," incidentally one of the best since parimutuel harness horse racing sponsored by the Kent & Essex Racing Association at Harrington has been in operation. Excellent contests prevailed. Photo's were required frequently to decide the winner. The two-year-old Knight Dream filly Mickey Diamond, owned and, driven by Tom Lewis, paced a mile in 2:10 in scoring a rather easy victory in the 24--class pace. The attendance during the opening week has been excellent and the management is well pleased with the outlook for a successful meeting. Dale Fetrow of Carlisle, Pa., is officiating as Starting judge with his Mobile Gate and as usual doing an excellent job.

Melman,

Good show. You went 2 for 5 on Tuesday, with a positive ROI. I had a dismal 0 for 5 showing this day. Two day total 0 for 9. Disastrous start for me, needless to say. Going to put this track on the shelf for a couple of weeks till they get more form. That may be part of my problem. I think a lot of the horses racing at Harrington Raceway haven't had a start since late June of this year.
