How many people think PA is missing the boat my not pursuing advertising on this site?
It's the premier horse race site on the Internet to my way of thinking and he could get a ton of ads -- and I just don't mean off-shore casinos or those Google ads he gets --

What do people think?
Would more ads chase you away?
What should he charge if he does decide to take ads?

I realize it's PA's choice but this is a great little business he's got here and I think we would all like to see him succeed. He puts a ton of hard work into it and even when he's defending NYRA to ridiculous extremes -- :p --I still respect him for his work ethic here and how he polices this place. Other sites have degenerated or gone up in smoke but the PA board continues to grow.

I cover the Internet -- at least the broadband video aspects of it -- for one publication -- and advertising is booming in the broadband arena. Why shouldn't PA get a piece?

You're so concerned w/ PA making money -- and that's good -- but why do
you assume (a) PA needs to make money and (b) PA would resort to selling
stupid systems or dumb items? I hope PA refuses to make this site a virtual
flea market. Oh, finally, my impression is that most regulars here are frugal,
concerned with the DRF costing $5 or with the price of ink cartridges & paper.
LOL ... see the "paper & toner" comment just posted.

I think PA gets something when we click on the sponsored links. This is good. As for advertising, I would have no problem with it. It is the American way.

Kreed,
You might be right. :D Maybe we should leave this one of the few "pure" sites on the Web. It's amazing how much work PA puts into it to keep it up and on an even keel. A labor of love -- maybe he likes it that way. I just figure if he's making a buck or two out of it he'll keep it going indefinitely. Hate to see it go away one day.....

I am a Budhist, maybe even the Next World Spiritual Leader, (NWSL) ... so
I accept that Everything on this planet has an Expiration Date. Even Web
sites. lol, that sounds eerie doesn't it?

I'm sure some system sellers would avail themselves of the opportunity to advertise here, but I think the bulk of the advertising revenue would come from the sites that take wagers, such as Pinnacle, and probably non-racing books as well.

From what I gather that revenue can be considerable.

The downside can be recriminations should a dispute arise between a bettor and an advertiser, when the host site's ad is interpreted by the customer as a reccomendation.

PA already has ads on the site. The Google AdSense ads are just that. If PA puts a banner for any type of gambling enterprise on this site, Google will ban him. The next time you see websites with those banners note the absense of AdSense. PA is probably borderline with Google as it is since gambling is discussed in the forum. Google is very, very vigilant about their no gambling, porn, etc. rules.

What might make more sense for PA to do, and this is only if he wants ads, would be to have a classified section where people could pay him to advertise their various services, etc. As I recall, however, PA just put the Google ads on the site to help generate revenue to cover the hosting fees.

I actually wish I owned this here site. If you have 1000 or more unique visitors a day to a website (I would be shocked if PA doesn't have that and much more), you can make some very good money...

I've already had my discussion with Google about this site, and they have independently reviewed the content and given it a thumbs up. I was initially denied when I applied for their adsense program, but pleaded my case well....

I know Google reviews sites very carefully. In fact, I think all of the sites in both the AdWords and AdSense programs get reviewed manually. It's pretty amazing when you consider the vast number of websites with Google ads. Like I said, you're borderline but legal. I'm glad you have the ads.

Mine wasn't (unless they just took a cursory look), until I made a stink.

With all the pop-ups that come from google searches, it is hard to imagine they have any ethics at all. And if they are filtering out gambling, then they are not my choice for a search engine.

Tom, I don't think the google searches cause pop-ups........by themselves. FYI

You can actually use the Google toolbar to stop pop ups. Google doesn't filter gambling (or anything), they just don't allow advertising for it.

I get almost no pop ups anymore with Google -- and you can allow site popups if you need it.
Now if we can only get rid of those ads that come at you before you get to a site and you have to find the "close window" X box in really really tiny letters in order to actually get to the site you want to get to....I don't mind ads on the web, but that's way too intrusive.

I've been using Firefox for quite awhile now and have never seen a pop-up. I only intuitively know what they are.

[confession time]

I haven't even ever seen one of PA's banner ads. This is default configuration without adjustment. I just haven't got around to undoing what otherwise is a useful feature.
