Well, maybe not a severed head, but a scary image designed to scare the crap out of you right after you're put into a zen-like trance by the pretty images (like fireworks!!)

Now that I remember it, it wasn't a severed head, but a thing that looked a lot like the girl from the Exorcist (fully demonized), only scarier....
