The casual player is more concerned with possibilities while the pro is more concerned with probabilities.

My father-in-law used to say, "So soon we get old, so late we get smart." It's still the same old story- Class, Odds, Pace, Speed, and Form and there is no magic bullet, no one size fits all, to handicapping. Thoroughbred handicapping is the greatest challenge, and I evolved as a handicapper when I stopped trying to pick the winner of a horserace.

that may well be true; but then, "professionals" shout about a ten percent return on investment as if it were the grail...

perhaps this is a consequence of blinding one eye in deference to the other?

That's 10 percent pre-rebates. Factor in a 7 percent rebate and the top wolves on Wall Street would be jealous.

Among other differences

Casual= concerned about picking winners

Pro= concerned about making a profit

One thing I've noticed on track:

Casual = Loud

Pro = Quiet

Professional player comes to the track in a $50,000 Jaguar.
Casual players come to the track in a $250,000 bus! :rolleyes:

You can afford bus fare? :D That's why I have to play at home.

Professionals probably don't go 17 days between wins. (Somebody, who shall remain nameless in order to protect his fragile ego, was on a 22-race losing streak until Page Two won the 10th at LaD today. :jump: )

I've known so-called "professional players" who have gone to Atlantic City in a $50,000 Jaguar, and came home in a $250,000 bus (I actually DO know of one...though it wasn't a Jag)

And if Big Red would like to see evidence of a loud professional player, he would only have to go to the 3rd floor grandstand at Aqueduct/Belmont by the finish line. If there ever was a candidate for duct tape.....

A pro knows there's always another day and another race. He exudes patience. The casual player, who doesn't play every day is more impetuous, forces it and wants it "right now" no matter how good...or bad...the card looks. And chances are he doesn't have the supplementary information at hand or as much time to do his "homework."

I've never seen a professional player but I've encountered thousands of casual fans. And in Mullins quote, he did not say professional players are idiots nor the owners of the horses he trains, I've never encounted either.

I'm a total rookie at this game, and only playing on a hobby basis right now. Someone here mentioned rebates? What are they, and how do they apply to betting? Thanks in advance, and try not to snicker too much.:D
