Thought this might be a good place to post preakness picks this week BEFORE the race. While reading how everyone (and their software) had the winner AFTER the race may be entertaining to some, let's see how we do in advance. Good luck to all. I'll post my losers later on this week.

In the spirit of PT Barnum, I'll register with 12 new usernames for the board and pick a different horse under each username. I call this the Sartin Multiple-pocket Methodolgy. I'm guaranteed to be "a winner" using this revolutionary view ("velo-equine-multi fractionality expealeoudotious" >tm<) of a mathematical puzzle we call numbers handicapping for four legged animals that I understand precious little about. ;)

That way I'll be able to crow that I had the winner in my CrapStamper (tm) software which just happens to be up for sale. (even tho I don't need the cash, thump, thump!) :p :D

Looking foreward to all's choices.

Preakness scenario:
The "fry War Emblen entiurage" is gunning from the get-go. d"or is still a bit thrashed from the Wood so Bailey can only get 4 more lengths than Pincay did, bye-bye. Booklet lives up to Baffert's proclamation of not being up to the distance. Lukas rabbit can't handle the pressure. War Emblem gets some pace pressure this time and hangs in there and, since he has proven stretch reserves, prevails again! With the surprise Equality completing the Exacta and Proud Citizen completes the Tri. I have stuck my neck way out here so I am not going to try to figure the superfecta if any. And I'm not betting this race anyway. This is based on the fact that Baffert does not have the jock strangle WE in a silly attempt to rate WE

Here is my non-commercial software's projected order of finish for the Preakness. The attached file has the complete program output. It likes the following:

[8]War Emblem 2178
[5]Medaglia d'Oro 2146
[13]Equality 1736
[12]Proud Citizen 1713
[6]Harlan's Holiday 1541

I also am not betting this race. Too many quality aniamls in one race. However, my heart is with WE (like to see a triple crown), Booklet (a gutsy classy performer), and USS Tinosa (know the owner).

With that said good luck to all and may they all come home safely.

Most likely dutching HH and USS for the win spot.

tri of 1,6/1,3,5,6,7,8,13/same for $60

super 1,6/1,6,5,8/1,6,5,8/1,3,5,6,7,8,13 for $48 and then move the bottom line up one for another $48.

Expect a half in 46 flat or it's all over.

Leaning Toward the following for the Preakness:

War Emblem
Equality
Proud Citizen

I am in agreement with Kitts on the Megadlia D'oro situation. I don't think that he will adjust very well at this distance, and at the current line of 5/2, I believe that he is way to heavy of a favorite this far along. If War Emblem runs the type of race he is capable of, either on or near the lead, I don't think any other horse can stay with him down the stretch. I believe that this horse is "for real"! He seems to have a gear that the other horses in this race don't have. Equality seems to like the distance as he has shown some excellent figs at 1 1/16th. I don't know if I want to throw out Harlan's Holiday, but, he is going to have to show much more quickness afoot early on to be able to keep up with several others in this race. Of late, he hasn't shown the facility to make that late rush near the end of the race like he did in some of the prep races that he was in leading up to the Derby.

Good Luck to all tomorrow.

Maybe we can manage to get a decent price on WE?

Probably not! <g>....

time to make a fool of myself again,

If Proud Citizen wins I'll eat my iMac.

1. Horse is likely to bounce after running the best race of his life by far.
2. Horse is a frontrunner who doesn't have the speed to stay with Booklet and War Emblem
You do have to respect Lukas tho but I'll take a stand against her unless she is 10-1 or over.

War Emblem and Medalgia d'oro are just the best two horses in the race and the Preakness runs much more to form than the Derby does. I'll be looking to hook them up with longshots in the exacta.

1. USS Tinosa --The rail is a problem -- he'll be pushed back with all the speed breaking outside of him so he may find himself way back in the pack early on. But the horse has a very good figure patten and can lay off the pace. has never successfully pressed a fast pace.

2. Magic Weisner. Don't laugh. Decent chance for 2nd or 3rd. Excellent late speed. Another horse going in the right direction and at the home track.

3. Harlan's Holiday. Especially if the track is sloppy. Horse is on the decline, but has the figures to be competitive and will be a price.

4. Equality. Outside post will hurt but is competitive in here.

5,8/1,2,6,13-- 2 units
1,6/5,8 -- 1 unit

5,8/1,2,6,13/1,2,5,6,8,13 -- 1 unit
1/5,8/2,5,6,8,13 -- 1 unit

or pass the race with no key horse that has value.

I don't plan to make a selection until I see what the
weather brings and how the track is playing. Here is
some info that may, or may not, be useful.

Work-ready

USS Tinosa
Of his last five works, four have been his best ever
at the respective distances. He was working very well
(not this good however) prior to the San Felipe and
ran well, being caught wide to put Siphonic away, but
Medaglia got the better trip and moved away late to win.

Equality
His last two 6f works are very nice and his best ever at
the distance. His draw of the 13-hole puts him in a tough
spot.

Off-track ready

Wet (Sloppy/Wet Fast)
USS Tinosa
Has never run on an off track but his works in the mud
and slop suggest he can handle it. His Tomlinson at 435*
is the biggest in the race.

Harlan's Holiday
Ran well at GP on a WF surface losing a nostril to Booklet.
Has worked well in the slop. Has a Tomlinson of 400.

Booklet
Another big move up in the off. Very nimble and has a
win at GP on WF. Distance still his biggest enemy.

Wet (Muddy/Good)
Equality
Huge win at GP on a track labeled GD. Good work on GD
at DEL last fall. Tomlinson figure is 375.

USS Tinosa
Nice 3rd at GG on a GD track in January. Works in mud are
just OK.

Medaglia D'Oro
Good works in the mud at CD and OP. Tomlinson fig is 370.

War Emblem
Lower Tomlinson than the others at 300. A good work on
a GD track at FG in January.

Of the others, Proud Citizen has a 345 Tomlinson fig but has
shown mixed results on off tracks. He ran 2nd in the slop in
his debut at BEL, but ran 6th at SAR on a MY surface. He has
a slow 6f work at CD in the slop, but some trainers prefer not
to work their stock fast when the track is off.

The others look like "also rans" to me. My gut tells me that Proud
Citizen will bounce. I think that it's strange that Lukas decides to
put another horse in the race.

Good luck!

I'm also concerned about value--or lack of it--in this race.

Speed folds:
# 12 Proud Citizen @ 5-1
# 1 USS Tinosa @ 20-1
# 5 Medaglia d'Oro @ 4-1
# 13 Equality @ 30-1

Of course for this to pay I need to get my odds and the speed has to fold.

Good Luck to All.

A cap, I just used that printout from last pace line (PL1). From a handicapping standpoint, I tossed out USS Tin last race cause of multiple problems it had. Prior to its last 3 PRAT 2 figs are as follows: 14-9-11. I tink it might have a chance to run a back to what it did 2 back.

I normally pay no special attention to "big" races, but I sat down to analyze this thing so that I could shoot my mouth off, and then look stupid after the race.

My three contenders are:

Medaglia d'Oro
War Emblem
USS Tinosa

I think Medaglia Medaglia d'Oro is the best horse, just slightly better than War Emblem, and possibly more versatile. There isn't much between them.

I put USS Tinosa just behind these two, but superior to everyone else.

Proud Citizen I give an outside shot, but he needs to improve, and it needs to set up perfectly for him.

I think Harlan's Holiday is a pretender, as is Equality and Booklet.

X factor: Table Limit??? Is there any reason to consider this horse besides the Lukas factor?

Man I gotta stop hangn around with you guys, I mean if you thimble brains were really serious you would have called my man Kelso Sturgeon (1/4 pg. add) and got the real scoop (of doop)... aah for only 20 bucks. Says hes had 5 of the last 8 Preakness winners and that WE will have to do 10 lengths better then his time in the Derby run to win. So what Kelso said was if WE ran the Derby in 1:59 ( lets see didnt Big Red do a 1:59 Derby) instead of 2:01 (2:01-10 lths= 1:59) auh then that time if reapeated would project him as the Preakness winner.

In other words the time of the Preakness winner will have projected to a Derby time of 1:59

So he's talkn the PN winners time is going to be run in oh 1:53 give or take a tick or two.

Kelso read my thread, Your probably the only guy in America that sees this winner. Man Iam here to tell ya that if your handicapping books are anything like your advertising claim, then palie you got monkey dump for brains. You Kalideascopecapper you

I think WE wins,MDO will bounce and take Booklet with him,but they can still stay ITM.But it would'nt be foolish to put Easyfromthegetgo,or Crimson hero in the mix with Proud citizen.
That being said I will bet
War Emblem/Proud Citizen,Easyfromthegetgo,Crimson Hero/PC,Easy,Crimson/Crimson,MDO,Equality
or

8/12,7,4/12,7,4/4,5,13

The bad thing is a wet track could take down WE,the good thing is a wet track could keep others from catching WE........
Theres still a chance the tri could be an IRS ticket, and the super should definetly be one(there is a super right?)

I've divided the race into three categories. Any of the horses in the first category can win, in my opinion.

Horses in the second category can come 2nd or 3rd.

Horses in the third category can come third.

My analysis: War Emblem will not face an uncontested pace like he did in the Kentucky Derby. Booklet, Menacing Dennis and Proud Citizen will probably all be fighting for the lead. This will certainly be a test for War Emblem. Is he the real McCoy or was the Kentucky Derby win a fluke? We'll see. It's exciting to think we might have a legitimate Triple Crown contender!

I expect Harlan's Holiday, Medaglia d'Oro, and Easyfromthegitgo to press the early pace runners. Everyone else will be trying to muster a late rally.

I'll structure my bets with the top 3 in the win position, and use some of the others for exotic bets as categorized above.

For a win bet: Any of the top three going off at 7/2 or more.

If it's pouring, all bets are off.

ohk lets see, first things first, gates open, there they go, will Booklet go to the front, set a fast enough pace to burn out WE and d'oro? hewill burn himself if he tries that as in the Florida. He wont do that as D'oro and WE can and will stay with what ever pace he tries to set if, he decides to lead, and pass him on the turn. no go. Will he juice it out to a 3-4 length lead slow it all down and have something for the run home? no, Baily and Espinoza are aware of this, will smell it, and quickly put an end to it. No, d'Oro and WE can go to the front with better early fractions, so Booket will have to wait and see, as in the derby.

I think WE will have to go to the front and d'oro will have to let him. I base this on a 47 half WE did at 1 1/4 mi. as opposed to the 46:4 half Oro went at 1 1/8 mi. If Oro would have tried, in the Derby, to go the half in 47 flat, at a mile and a 1/4 as WE did, he wouldnt have lasted like WE.

Well dOro's got to do something, WE's going to the front and with a shorter distance here and with Booklet no real threat to make it a 3 horse duel will probably ( have to) go with him. And again with that shorter distance WE can take it a tick or two faster to the half which will hurt d'Oro. Someone has to go with WE or hes gone and d'Oro will have to be the one, hes not going to have enough to overtake WE. If Bailey tries to lead, he aint going to take Oro out faster then a 46:3 or 4 half, and WE can handle that.

So as far as my handicapping goes I really cant look any further cause WE will have it from the start

First Look:
1. USS TINOSA – Longshot – in condition, likes wet track, good connections, decent speed, could move up, keep for exotics.
2. MAGIC WEISNER – Non-contender –backside likes
this horse, likes wet track, good connections
3. STRAIGHT GIN – Longshot – loves the wet track, good in all
categories, keep for exotics.
4. CRIMSON HERO - Non-contender – distance plus, some late speed
suicide early battle.
5. MEDAGLIA D’ORO – Contender – top of rankings in most categories.
6. HARLAN’S HOLIDAY – Contender – wet track moves him up, condition a concern.
7. EASYFROMTHEGETGO - Non-contender – has some speed, distance a plus.
8. WAR EMBLEM – Contender – top of rankings in most categories.
9. TABLE LIMIT - Non-contender – only a early factor.
10. BOOKLET – Contender – will give everything, great rankings, likes the wet track, good connections, major influence in the race.
11. MENACING DENNIS - Non-contender – early factor, good speed, good distance.
12. PROUD CITIZEN – Longshot – 2nd in Derby a longshot?, distance and wet track a plus, dangerous if improving.
13. EQUALITY – Longshot – distance and wet track a plus, this could be the horse that will benefit from a killer early pace if he can rate, good rankings.

Race Analysis:
Early Pace:
TABLE LIMIT and MENACING DENNIS will just go out as fast as they can, with WAR EMBLEM, MEDAGLIA D’ORO, and BOOKLET right behind. USS TINOSA, STRAIGHT GIN, HARLAN’S HOLIDAY, PROUD CITIZEN, and EQUALITY running mid-pack. MAGIC WEISNER, CRIMSON HERO, EASYFROMTHEGETGO trailing.
Middle Pace:
MEDAGLIA D’ORO and WAR EMBLEM make strong moves. BOOKLET, HARLAN’S HOLIDAY, MENACING DENNIS, and PROUD CITIZEN giving all they got. EQUALITY sitting just behind. MAGIC WEISNER and USS TINOSA making a strong middle move. STRAIGHT GIN, CRIMSON HERO, EASYFROMTHEGETGO, TABLE LIMIT should be done.
Late Pace:
MAGIC WEISNER, MEDAGLIA D’ORO, and WAR EMBLEM should be visually impressive, with USS TINOSA, EQUALITY, HARLAN’S HOLIDAY, and BOOKLET not out of it.

Predicited Order:
1. MEDAGLIA D’ORO
2. WAR EMBLEM
3. MAGIC WEISNER
4. EQUALITY
Wagering:
Win: Value plays on #2 and #13
Trifecta: 5-8/2-5-8-13/1-2-5-6-7-10-13 $30 for $1 wager.

Use to know a guy (deceased) that only played double letters in the doubles He did very well with it, for him it was "tried and true" I guess that's why they called him "Ace".

Nice hit andicap! I also had the exacta. And I posted my horses BEFORE the race this time. (in this thread) Nice gutsy win by WE, will hopefully silence some more of his critics. I would love to see him win the Belmont too, but that is where a lot of triple crown dreams end.

I got Exacta Too.......nice little bit of change.

But I also got my first nice Super. $13 Grand.

I had a ticket with the same key that won, except I put the #2 over WE. If he could have caught WE and won, man I would have really scored then. I would have probably been a little upset that WE was beaten, but I am sure the prices would have soothed me.

Thanks td,
my "HE" figures -- skews late pace (but not too late and factor in final time) were unbelieveably dead on, except for Medaglia. I would bet there is something wrong with the horse the way he packed it in. If you recall these figs had War on top for the Derby but I disbelieved the Illinois Derby rating. No more!

Last 45 days
War 226
Magic 224
Medaglia 219
Proud 216

Including last 90 days, Harlan has a 225, but two poor races after that.

Magic Weisner did not have very good times in my two early speed measurements, but War Emblem sure did. Dick Mitchell once wrote that "unbalanced" horses often finish second and I'm beginning to believe him as Magic was the quintessential unbalanced horse -- no early figs, but very good late/middle ones.

You are complaining about a 13K hit?!What more can you ask for than that? They shoot the losers and serve you up a cup of their blood?:D Relish the score, don't get greedy.(unless you placed major money in the pool-like 10 grand)

No I am not complaining...........but just think what the other score would have been. In fact I am estatic. 3/4's of a length is pretty close though. It would have been awesome!

Thank You BOOTS ... for your post on the Equisim ROI's: I had
100% confidence in WE so I played with him on Top, but after
seeing your listing Magic among the 5 listed, I wheeled him on Top
with those 4 others. hehe .... Of course, Proud C. was a real
contender, but it was MW that made me mucho dinero. If your
ever in NYC its Papaya King hot dogs on me!

Ok You got me....... I waited until after the race and then jumped in. I just wait until after all the big races and make a bee-line for Pace Advantage just to have the satisfaction of acting like I picked the winner.

I promise to make sure that I put my life on hold and make all of my posts according to all the rules. So help me Gosh and on Secretariats grave. I think if you go back and check you will see that I was all over WE before the Derby and I didn't see anything in the Derby to change my mind. See the link below. Youbet.com tickets.

I had two of those and 13,000 reasons to be happy about it.
I have just one question for you. Are you always like this? Are you a moderator of the board? Or did you just take it upon yourself to jump on me? I was invited over here by some other users who told me about the board via email. If I am invading your private space, or anybody elses for that matter, please have the board moderator email me. So far its been a pretty good experience but I would say you seem to take it pretty seriously. Maybe too seriously? Its supposed to be fun. Try to remember that.

I wasn't trying to make you mad Ralph, just stating what I thought was a valid point. That said, I never said, or even implied, that you didn't have the super. Congrats on a great score.

CJ

p.s. For the record, if you look back in the selections page far enough, I've like WE since pre Illinois Derby, so we have something in common!

Oh great...the electronic equivalent of the guy sitting next to you at the track or otb, who you do not know from Adam, shoving a ticket into your face AFTER the race showing you he got the winner.

Gee, has anyone ever had that happen to them?

Jim

PS...Congrats on the hit. Could you buy me a coke?
