Interesting article on outsourcing of programmers. The hemorrhaging was worst than I thought.

Just wait till you see the outsourcing of accountants. Pretty soon, the major firms will process most of their work overseas.

But not for accountants
I have a hard time believing that big US firms will allow folks in China &/or Mexico to do their payroll, prepare various tax filings, and do audit/bookwork?

Supervisors in the States, with the leg work being done overseas. Its been trending that way for a couple of years. The bean counters don't need good English skills or people skills, they just have to be good at math, very similar to programmers. While the management will be in the States to deal with client relations, the ones who crunch the numbers will be based overseas.

No, your right.
I did a search and found some accountants in India.
Pretty interesting being that I am one.

old news? Perhpas you missed this quote from the article:
"The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that information technology industries laid off more than 7,000 American workers in the first quarter of 2005."
That's 2005 JR, not 2000.

When I was programming back in the 80's and 90's, I worked with quite a few people who immigtrated to the U.S. and became computer programmers and computer consultants. The last decade or so, the companies providing those jobs are now seeking the programmers where they currently live. Hopefully the competent and talented U.S. based programmers will keep/find jobs in the U.S.

The eventual problem (as we are seeing now) is that standards of living begin to decrease and with it much of the economic growth that comes with gradual, rising wages.
It was a part of the factor that did not lead to significant employment growth when interest rates were at 60 year lows 2 years ago > deepening economic troughs...should be an interesting couple of years coming up!
The problem wiht outsourcing is that there is no security on the data they handle. We need strict government regulations on everyhting going overseas becaseu most businesses are to irresponsible to ensure it themselves. Jsut look at the pathetic banking institutions right here at home! The entire banking issue needs to be reviewed and updated to this century. Frankly, the whole industry is far to lax and needs to be reeled in.
