I had a great hit yesterday at Woodbine thanks to my JCapper program. The 1-2-3 finishers were rated in exactly that order. I was thrilled getting the $42 win mutual and hitting the $440 exacta, but I really expected more (around $3,000) in the tri. Did I figure it wrong or does this payoff seem low to anybody else?

You were betting into a pool with an onerous takeout at Woodbine- 28.3% - that lessened you payout.

Thanks, Figman (and thanks for the chart), I have to confess I have not paid much attention to the difference in tri take out.

I don't play WO but I believe U.S. wagers are in a separate pool from the Canadian wagers due to the different currencies. Then you'd be playing into a smaller pool and unexpected payoffs are more likely.

The bet in question on this thread was a bet at a Canadian track, Woodbine.
US wagers do go into Canadian pools.

It doesn't as yet happen in the opposite direction as Canada forms their own pools for wagers on US tracks.

Federal legislation fixed that recently by elimination of a certain tax. However, all the provinces in Canada have different takeouts so Canada needs US tracks to do "net pool pricing" and the mechanics of achieving this has yet to be worked out to my knowledge.

There has not been much value in the tri pools at WO for years.
Takeout is onerous and players are better at playing them.
Bang the exactor hard, better value and not a blind pool.

is the # of winning tickets sold.there were about 35 winning tickets sold. That has no bearing on the odds of the horses only on how much is paid to winners. If there was only 10k in the pool, you would have won 200 bucks,no matter if the horses were all 99-1.If the take was 15 % you would have made another 200 bucks or so.A 10% increase in payout. In the wide scheme of things takeout is not a major consideration, the overall pool size is.The odds of the horses does not increase the payout, the # of people betting and # of winning tickets does.I have seen payouts where low priced horses come in and the payout is in the thousands because there were not that many tickets sold on the winning combos.Only alot of bets.

Supah,

I get a diff. of 18.5 %, meaning about $380.00 more at 15% takeout, admittedly a pipedream.
