Someone called Ruidoso Downs the Saratoga of Quarterhorse racing?

Anyone know anything about it?

I'm going there at the end of July. Any info appreciated. Thanks.

Seeing how I've never been to the Spa, I'm not really qualified to answer, but my guess is that it's similar in a way. High profile races culminating with the futurity. Everyone makes a vacation of it. Only been once, but it was kind of cool. If you are a golfer play at the Inn of the Mountain Gods, and don't settle for breakfast at your hotel. Been a while since I've been there, but some really really good breakfast restaurants around.

YM,
Thanks for the advice.

Someone else referred me to the Inn of the Mountain Gods, too. I booked a room there for a few nights. I don't usually like to stay at casino/resorts with my family (we like smaller local hotels/motels) but since this was highly recommended we decided to give it a try. I'm not a very good golfer but I might sneak in a round.

When we were in Taos last year, we had a great breakfast at a local joint. Maybe breakfast is a New Mexican specialty? I love southwestern food, so we'll definately hit the local restaurants for meals.

I read some reviews that the staff at Inn of the Mountain Gods is rude and naive compared to other resorts. If that's true, we'll definately be hitting the local restaurants. Plus, I like to get the feel of the town. Staying at a resort will be fun for the kids, but I hope we don't miss out on too much of the local flavor.

Rude and naive sound almost antithetical. May be preferable to the norm -- sweet and cynical. Sounds worth a try.

That's what I thought, too! :D But I didn't write the review and I've never been there. I'll let y'all know when I get back -- better yet, I'll let you know while I'm there. They're supposed to have high-speed internet in the rooms. :)

I don't know about the Saratoga of QH racing, but Ruidoso Downs is picturesque. It sits among the tall pines of the Sacramento Mountains, about 6,000 feet, and features top-notch racing. One thing it holds over Los Al are the bigger fields, especially on weekends. Even the QH trials are thrilling.

The Inn of the Mountain Gods is a class place. Just reopened after about a year of extensive renovation. If you're not into gambling, there's a lot to do in the area. There's a Smokey Bear Museum downtown, choice fishing rivers and streams, a space museum in nearby Alamogordo (about 40 miles away) and all the UFO stuff in Roswell (about 70 miles east). The kids will love that.

I live up north in Santa Fe, but make the trip to Ruidoso a couple of times every summer. Hopefully, we'll get our track back here in 2006. At least, that's what I heard through the grapevine. Have a good time.

Wick,

This is great. Thanks a lot. The kids will love the UFO stuff.

I'm not much into casino gambling, but I may try a little poker if they have it.

Mostly, I'm looking forward to going to the track! I'm going to try putting together some Charles Carroll speed figures and see what I can come up with.

Regards,

John
