On local radio (610WIP SportsRadio) John Servis stated "we would bring Smarty out of retirement for a match race with Afleet Alex". Owner of AA Joe Lero said sounds good just need someone to put up the money.

Hey Mel,

Brings back a lot of memories. Still Angelo, Tony and Al in the mornings? Jody Mac? Howard Eskin? I've been to a few Wing Bowls in my day too!

On the subject, would be interesting, AA would be at a disadvantage is Smarty could return to his previous form with less early speed. Then again, that is what they said about Seabiscuit! :)

Same crew Craig except Jody Mac who is long gone. Think he is on XM radio.

Craig, I think WIP is on the web now. If not they plan on being very very soon. 610WIP.com. Some of the talk is a lot of fun.

Okay J. Servis here's the invite:

Smarty Jones vs Afleet Alex

I'm putting up the purse to this match race.

Date: 09/17/2005 Saturday.

Place: Arlington Park.

Purse: $1.02 [$1.00 to the Winner, $.02 for 2nd.]

Distance: 11 furlongs.

Weights: Smarty Jones 126 lbs. Afleet Alex 122 lbs.

Medications: No drug tests will be administered before or after the race.

Rules:
No whips
No front wraps

Post Position Draw: There isn't one. Smarty gets the two hole, Alex gets the three hole.

Trophy Presentation: An inexpensive bowl of cashews. Because J. Servis has to be nuts if he's gonna bring this horse out of retirement for a match race.

Televised: {All networks can contact me to open negotiations of the broadcast of this race...including dvd sales}

i bet smarty could really motor by now if like someone else said he's matured a lot, a hand or two bigger and put on a some lbs. So advantage Smarty.

I for one would LOVE to see these two horses face each other -not in a match race - but in the Breeder's Cup Classic!

When Jeff Mullins is standing in the winner's circle after the Breeders Cup Classic, I hope he turns his back to the TV camera and gives a big fat moon to everyone watching.

According to equidaily.com, the match race thing by John Servis was a hoax.

You've been Punked.

That use to be a angle of the Breeders Cup Classic ,the first person I heard say it was Mark Cramer the winniner of the Kentucky Derby was also the winner of the Breeders Cup Classic. This held up for a number of years. It stopped around 1990 Unbridled was the last. The winner of the Derby hasn't been around for the Breeders Cup in awhile.

Okay, I know for sure:

Proud Truth,

Sunday Silence,

Unbridled and

AP Indy.

Go For Gin's Derby year, who won the BC, and who won the Eclipse?
Charismatic's year, who won the BC? Surely not Lemon Drop Kid?
F. Pegasus' year, was it Tiznow, to repeat the following year at four?
