SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The summer racing season at Saratoga is still eight weeks away, but Todd Pletcher's barns near the Oklahoma Training Track were pretty lively Friday morning.

While the leading trainer of the last two years was busy at Belmont Park, his assistants were taking care of business here, overlooking the movements of 62 horses already on the grounds.


'We're pretty optimistic about this summer. We've got a lot of young horses that look like they'll be ready to go when the races come around,' assistant Seth Benzel said.

The 30-year-old, who's worked for Pletcher for the last three years, said that one of the major goals of the Saratoga operation is to get the 2-year-olds accustomed to their new surroundings.

'I just think that the atmosphere here is better for them both mentally and physically,' Benzel said. 'I just feel like they can feel the difference if they're not near the city (New York). They're in a relaxed atmosphere
