Undefeated three-year-old Lost in the Fog, 6-for-6 with five stakes wins, will be the horse to beat in the Grade 2, $200,000 Riva Ridge Breeders' Cup at seven furlongs. The son of Lost Soldier returns to New York after easily disposing of two rivals in a listed stakes at Golden Gate.
Lined up to face Lost in the Fog are B. B. Best, Francis "Jock" LaBelle winner Egg Head, Going Wild, Middle Earth, Gotham winner Survivalist, Tani Maru and War Plan. Considered possible for the Riva Ridge are Proud Accolade, Vicarage and White Socks.
You know I'll be Going Wild on this race!

Someone will have to prove they can beat him. Looked good to me last out live. If both AA and G lose the Belmont, Lost in the Fog should 3 yr old of the year. What's the last time a sprinter was best at 3?
You're going to make 3YO HOY out of a "ducker?" If he is so good, why has he ducked the big races? This ain't Survivor - you don't get awards for outlasting you opponents - you have to beat them.
BTW, how can I get excited over anything coming from a bush track in NoCal?
I could probably win there, if it was under 7! :D

Went back to 1971 and the number of times the three year old champ and the sprint champ were the same??? ZERO
Same thing will happen again since the powers that be will NEVER consider the classics and sprints in the same breath.
If Lost in the Fog wants some recognition OUTSIDE a sprint, he will just have to take on graded opponents at least at 9.0 furlongs to have ANY legitamacy as the best three year old this year.
Is any other big names showing up for Bel. day??

Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, worked five furlongs in 1:02, breezing on the firm inner turf course this morning.
Trainer Barclay Tagg has nominated the 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor to two important races on Belmont Stakes Day: the Grade 1, $400,000 Manhattan Handicap at a mile and a quarter on the inner turf; and the Grade 2, $250,000 Brooklyn Handicap at nine furlongs on the dirt.

The other 2 undercard stakes are still showing last year's noms. I think they also have upped the purses $10000 for the non-stakes races on the cards. All starts at noon Saturday. Can't wait.

From Drf:
Unfortunately, plans to race Funny Cide on the turf were scrapped after he worked a slow five furlongs in 1:02.01 over Belmont Park's inner turf course Sunday morning. Thus, Funny Cide will remain on the dirt and make his next start in Saturday's $250,000 Brooklyn Handicap. With Giacomo running in the Belmont Stakes on the same day, fans will be afforded the rare opportunity of watching two Kentucky Derby winners compete on the same card.
So much for that plan :)

who was Barclay Tagg before Funny Cide? i really never heard of him then.
anyways i think he trains too easy. doing battle in GR1's REQUIRES speed.
one part is the horse itself, but FC's training schedule looks like he's ready
to battle claimers. It just doesn't look tough enough.

I can't believe it but I must actually agree with Kreed on this. To me it seems like most of the se top end horses get treated like veal these days. They race rarely and occaisionally work out. That's another reason I like Alex a lot because he gets out of the stall much more and as a result is much more fit than his competiton. Once upon a time these guys used to run a lot, which kept them fit. Now, 3 timed works between races doesn't really get the same level of race fitness. Alex is out there training for the marathon that he's about to run. The others are still sprinting.

HAH! And yet, on this very board, D. Wayne gets routinely crucified for running his horses too much and "in the wrong spots", and not taking the "conservative" route most trainers "would take" with talent (and no, I'm not talking about horses like Going Wild....go a little deeper than that).

Actually the DRF Funny Cide story goes deeper stating how they plan to avoid running against Ghostzapper until the BC.They actually state he's the best (GZ) and they don't want to face him more than they have too.Bit ironic since these two horses have both been pulled from races for various reasons ranging from weight to weather.
PS Original post 4 yr old Funny Cide was a snippet. I Missed that. :D

You are 100% right.DWL does at least showcase his best horses to the public.
This is a tough topic these days.Horses that run to little and horses that run too much.Actually injuries could happen to horses for both reasons.I guess from a public standpoint I'd rather see it done the way DWL does it.

D. Wayne does put them out there. I would never mock the man as a trainer. He has been very good in the past and is still good now. Just not getting the horseflesh he used to and for some reason people still expect him to put up the same results with less quality material to work with.
I will however mock his and anyone else's statements to the press when they border on the inane. I will have to bring up Going Wild in this spot.
I think what the whole thing comes down to is how well do these "supertrainers" know their horses. When you have a stable of over 200 horses, how the hell can you know what each one needs? The tendency becomes to treat them all much the same, so in the end some run too much and get hurt and some run too little and get hurt and some don't train enough and some train too much and so on and so on. So all the complaints we have about all these things are all true and all false all at the same time. Alex is getting what he needs now from Tim Ritchey. If Frankel is to be believed as well, so too is Ghostzapper. But how many of them out there right now are not? These large and supersized operations really rely on the assistants. Most of us don't even know who these guys are, but they are the real trainers of these horses from big time operations. Maybe the real trainer angle we need to see is what the records are of the horses under each assistants' care is.

Actuallt Tagg is one of the few trainers that trains 7 days a week. I am not familiar with FC's personal training schedule but I don't think there is much that can be done for him he ran his best 2 races back to back in the derby and the preakness and peaked in the preakness (or actually in his workout after the preakness before the belmont) he hasn't run like the same horse since

Im criticizing D Wayne again. so supporters read no further.
Look at where THEY (D Wayne and Paulson) put AZERI -- in the BC CLASSIC against Ghostzapper & Roses in May and a coupla other standouts. That was her retirement race too. Bad spot for such an outstanding one.

Belmont Park is putting an excellent show on Saturday.Despite no shot at a TC champ. What an excellent undercard-stars aplenty.Just think on the pick 3-4-6's.Lost In The Fog/Artie S/Afleet Alex singles on a lotta tics.If you can beat these boys (lotta luck) you stand to cash very well with these exotics. This day will be action packed start to finish!
Best of Luck & Skill to All-KC :jump:

Bobby, it's possible they thought she wouldn't win the Distaff; a loss to the boys was a built-in excuse to give her a shot @ Eclipse for Older Female. Just saying it's possible.

Definitely going for the P4, but still not too sure of the P6. Lot of solid quality out there.
KingChas...got to agree those look like singles. Think the best chance of upset, much as I like him, is with Artie Schiller. The turf race for the girls should be between Wonder Again, Intercontinental, and horse for the course Riskaverse (a personal favorite ever since I first saw her due to my economics training). Funny Cide is no lock in his race either with Limehouse, Gygistar and the old trooper Evening Attire. Throw in my longshot pick for the day in that race Cuba and the P6 sure still looks a little wide open.

I agree Artie may be the most vunerable of the three singles.I had to laugh at a comment read someplace else about Artie. "Remember Artie S has never won at this distance."He raced one time at 1&1/4 and came in second to non other than a very hot Kittens Joy at the time. Not a bad resume at all.

As a fan, I love the Belmont undercard from races 7 through 10. Good races, good fields-- lots of fun to watch. But I don't know if there will be a wager for me in those races. Actually, I'll pretty much guarantee no wagers in races 7 through 9.
In the Manhattan, I'm trying to determine whether I'll take 4/1 on Meteor Storm if his ML holds. He looks like the best horse at this distance, but there are a few other horses that have a chance. I'm not convinced that Artie Schiller wants the added distance, but he has put up several outstanding finishing fractions at 8f-9f and the probably modest pace will suit him, so he gives me serious cause for pause. America Alive beat Meteor Storm last out but he had the cleaner trip; also, I don't like American Chance as a 10f sire. Mustanfar has a chance here, too.
Saint Stephen is taking a class jump that seems too much to overcome, but this is a well-bred horse that is improving seriously so he could run into the exotics at a big price. He beat L'Oiseau d'Argent last out without too much difficulty, and that one came back to blow away a pretty good classified allowance field yesterday.
Lost In The Fog is a machine!

How about Arroyo? DQ'd from the win in the 4th and DQ'd from the show in the 9th. Talk about a bad day. Last week, we see Castro set a record at CRC for wins in a day by a jockey. What's the record for DQ's in one day for a jockey?
This guy commits more fouls than a drunk guy in the bowling alley with sticky dried beer all over the bottom of his shoes!

How's this for an angle - use the 1 in the Belmont and watch Arroyo win on the maiden and make up for his two DQ's today!
(If you think I'm serious, trust me, I am not)
