This is a good place to prepare for being a trainer -- you need a thick skin for both activities.

Welcome to the board,Know whats under them before you get on them, I remember when I was 17 on the racetrack..Hotwalking getting all the crap jobs, Hell I had to carry a waterbucket with two hands..Pay attention to the animals and they will teach you how to respond to their language

Savannah- Welcome. I'm sure there's plenty of headaches associated with training horses just as there is in any other job that is kept to close scrutany.
However, what a wonderful atmosphere to spend one's busy life doing. Best of luck in your trainer apprentice-ship.

i know it is not going to be easy. i own 3 horses of my own and i know what its like having to carry a two full water buckets at the same time clear across a show ground. i've got alot of practice in that and in cleaning stalls, riding, training riding horses, the long hot days and all of that happy stuff. and you know what i love it:) thanx for making me feel welcome!

Training has to be a very complex job. A lot of differerent things going on.
I Hope you learn as much as possible an become a great assistant trainer or a trainer yourself.
There seem to be a number of good young trainers that owners trust with better horses, abd I assume trust is the best attribute for a trainer. There are a few owners and a couple of trainers on here.
I am also on exercise riders forum, and they are linked to a trainer site.
Some trainers have bios or websites online that you may find interesting.

i am going to be apprenticing under Jessica L. Pizzurro. (think thats how you spell it cant remember)she was nice enough to answer back to an email i sent her and offerd me and apprenticeship with her for the summer. i have been tracking her DRF.com. she has sent me some videos of some of the horses i will be working with and she keeps me updated on what's going on over there. i will be going to meet her next month then if everything works out i will be staying with her from july to the end of august. wish i could spend more time with her but i cant. but next summer she might have a job for me there and i hope i will be able to do it.

No one's calling you stupid...they're just having fun. Believe me if you want to be trainer as a woman you'll get called a lot worse. It's a very tough profession for women. Racing is a man's world. You'll need a very thick hide, (I've been told, I'm not in racing myself).

You have to remember while the people here are glad to welcome you, in the end it won't make much difference to anyone whether you stay or not. I mean these people chased away Frank LaBocceta Jr., a respected trainer in New York!!

My best advice is to give it back to Suff as good as he's giving it --- good-naturedly. That's what he respects. Believe me, on this board he might seem like a curmudgeonly old fart, but in person -- well, actually in person he is exactly like that. Only not so old. And when you're 21 he'll buy you a drink.

Hi everyone! I would like to introduce myself. I am Jessi Pizzurro, trainer at Mountaineer. A little birdie told me my name was being mentioned and I thought I would come say hello.

I was referred to Savannah by a friend of mine - as Savannah wanted to learn about horses, and my friend knew I had planned to have some working students in this summer at the track. I asked Savannah if she would be interested and when could we schedule a meeting to work out the details etc. We did correspond awhile but I never could get any verification from her parents. By this time I had divided the summer up into 3 sessions of three weeks each and advertised on the pedigreequery.com forum that I was taking applications for each spot. I had an overwhelming response, almost a dozen very nice young ladies all wanting to learn more about being involved with horseracing - hotwalking, grooming, bandaging, training theory, paddocking horses, feeding, supplements, barn management, the list is endless. Some students will be learning about reschooling OTTBs for their after racing careers. No students will be riding at the track, but we do keep several horses on a farm by the track for afternoons.

Anyway, I got firm commitments from several sets of parents immediately and the three spots filled right away. I did make room for a fourth student who will come in while my older two children are on vacation with their grandmother so my house isn't TOO crammed full of kids and teenagers. ;) Savannah is on a wait list in case of a cancellation. I have talked to her on the phone and she seems like a sweet girl.

Good luck at the races!
Jessi P

Here is what I want to know about Suff. Many people here at PA have met Suff in person. The unanimous feeling is that he is a great guy. I myself hope to meet some some day. This kind of thing has always made me laugh, I sure as hell didnt learn from a horse by reading a book..AND another thing..Who the hell is to say whether you know how to train a horse or not..ITS a matter of opinion.A " horseman" doesnt need a book to study about a test,A good trainer uses common sense. Savannh if you own 3 horses Im sure your a very smart girl on your way to being a excellent horsewoman.People like you are very important in a sport where so much abuse is/has taken place. She is on Del Mar Fan Forum also; of course there are young people into racing, the NTRA just ignores them!
Savannah- you can find books and 2 vidoes about training racers online by some good people; also there is a national trainer's license site where you can see what they expect you to know.
There is also a couple of trainers on an "ask the experts" free site, 1 is a female. You can find a number of trainers online that work at tracks or have their own training centers.

Hey Chas, I think half the blame has to go to the original poster....

If you look back on most "NEW HERE" type threads, they typically get this kind of action, and this kind of response. And more times than not, these "New Here" type threads are started by people looking to pull your leg, for whatever reason.

Hey Chas, I think half the blame has to go to the original poster....

If you look back on most "NEW HERE" type threads, they typically get this kind of action, and this kind of response. And more times than not, these "New Here" type threads are started by people looking to pull your leg, for whatever reason.

Damn, I'm found out...

Okay, now that I've thought about it, TLG wasn't really badmouthing these two people per se, he was badmouthing two internet posters that he thought were phonies.

So, even though I think he's incorrect on that point, my response was not entirely fair.

Little Guy.. did someone look for me at the track this morning? I certainly didn't disappear. We are usually there til about 12:30-1:00, Barn I, stalls 8-24. Stop by anytime. I have 6 that I train, my other half has 15 he trains here (alternating with another 20-25 at the farm in Cleveland) for his boss Bob Guciardo, who is based in Cleveland, runs the jock's kitchen there (Thistledown).

Interesting discussion board. I never would have imagined that there was a BB for handicappers......... but what a great idea.Yeah right.

Here is what I want to know about Suff. Many people here at PA have met Suff in person. The unanimous feeling is that he is a great guy. I myself hope to meet some some day. When I meet Suff, and when you all are around Suff, do you call him Mike or Suff. In most cases, I think that our intenet handles are just that, for the internet only. But I could actually see people calling Suff by his internet name. So which is it; Suff? Mike? The King? Mr. Suff?

I tend to call him Mike in person or on the phone, though I'm sure suff has come out a few times. I think most of the guys called me CJ at the Spa or our Aqueduct get together, though no one else does or ever has anywhere else. Now that I'm thinking about it, most guys were referred to by their board names if I rememeber right.

Ruffian,

We used to have a couple horses running at Mountaineer. Our trainer was Marilyn Marino. I'm sure she'd offer you a lot of good advice if you get a chance to talk with her.

Also, Matt Kintz is a very knowledgeable trainer and a real gentleman.

Both of them are worth looking up while you're there.

I can certainly understand your skepticism. Just like "Oh YES he is SOUND, just slow" or - as the horse gimps past - "Oh, he has always gone like that." Even better is - "His MOTHER went like that." And let's not forget "He'll win next time FOR SURE, name me back on!"

Marilyn delivers some of our hay, she is a very nice person. I also second the opinion that Matt Kintz is very knowledgeable and a total sweetheart. I have known him almost 10 years since he was at Thistle. He works the Keeneland sales quite frequently. Super nice guy, loads of practical experience, and smart. I have a couple young horses about the same stage as some of his and he asked if we had anything we could work together out of the gate.

For the public knowledge pool: I train 6 horses, my other half Darren Heinrich trains 15-18 at any one time for his boss, Bob Guciardo, who lives/trains in Cleveland and runs the jock's kitchen at Thistledown. They alternate another 20-25 head in and out from a farm in Cleveland.

We have 2 in tomorrow, Kid Chocolate (watch out if he gets loose on the lead with Rex) and Seattle Theme. Seattle Theme won her last start NW3L against older fillies and mares, including some that were stakes placed, the amazing thing is she is only 3 AND a June 12 foal. Tomorrow looks to be her toughest challenge yet in the NW4L, in fact I think she is 5-1 or so ML. Kid has been fourth in his last 2 starts.. was ready to retire and I made the 'drastic' :D training move of stretching him out to 2 turns even tho his owner/breeder said he had never had any success going long previously (as he is a 9 yo, "previous" encompasses many years!).

Good luck at the races!

Dragging out the big words eh Doc? Too bad that attempt at sophistication followed your extremely weak attempt to insult me. :D Wasn't going to mention your spelling error, but hey, none of us are perfect.

FWIW, the Mountaineer races are shown live for free from the Mountaineer site (what am I saying, this is a handicapping board, any handicapper worth his salt knows you can watch the live feed from Mnr for free online.... ). And yes, that does include the paddock. I will be sure to smile at the camera and wave "hi" to ya tomorrow night Doc. ;)

A horses gate. His walk. That's a trainers thing. Claiming trainers can size up a horse by watching him walk 40 feet. No Beyer Speed Figure. No past peformances, Just watch him walk, and they know 98% of whats wrong with a Horse.

Groom's, excersice riders, walkers and barn help come in on the next bus at Suffolk.. . They come into a barn stay for a month and jump with all the information to another barn. They all tip the "Buyers" who's on form. Watching a horse walk/excercise and keeping your ear to the ground is how many if not most of the claims are done here. I assume its done that what most places?

Also, the railbirds are'nt all trainers. They are owners (buyers). Guys with 10 grand burning a hole in thier pocket. At Suffolk , the buyers come from all walks of life because we're an urban track. We have our share of shady's.

A barn I know just left your track. Burton Sipp. I've been getting weekly Mountaineer small talk. I talk to guys working Penn National, Philly, CharlesTown etc etc... and Mountaineer works its way into those Bullshit sessions. So I know a couple of back side people there. My friend Jarrod also works there, out frontside.. But none the less. I did get your PM. I saw the links, the photos. I'm sure all is well, (and I'm 99.9% sure it is). You may just pick up the phone this week and hear "Hi Jessi It's Suff!".
You seem like an interesting person, & a talented horsewoman. It'd be my pleasure to say hello to you. but Because you did PM me as the "real" Jessi, its incubment on me to be 100% sure. I think.

Oooooooooo Burton Sipp. He had one in almost every race here. Does he still have giraffes and other exotics? And has he insured any horses lately? I wouldn't want to pay his premiums with his history.

The claim game...... We claim a lot from word of mouth. And a lot of Chicago horses come in here - Darren can call up buddies there to find out about the horse. Claimable horses pass through a lot of hands here and it usually isn't hard to find someone we know who has had something to do with the horse recently. And someone with half a brain can recognize a horse in the morning if they try hard enough. A big part of claiming is knowing your fellow trainers. I do NOT want to claim from a Larry Rivelli or a Bernie Flint (or any of the Pooles for that matter). Some trainers know how to get all the juice outa the lemon. Some trainers know when to sell a horse (with one win left in the horse so the buyer comes back and buys another when you need to sell one). Other trainers suck the horse dry and hone on it til there is nothing left but a husk - those horses aren't worth feeding. Then again there are the "trainers" who haven't seen the ball since the kickoff, the really clueless ones.

With watching them walk.. I am always suspicious of a horse that looks too clean legged and has a perfect cadence to his walk, with equal drop in his suspensories upon weight bearing. Racehorses aren't perfect, and if I am looking at one to claim it is because it's a runner. Runners will usually end up with something wrong somewhere, a little hitch SOMEWHERE, because if the horse consistently runs hard enough it's going to get sore. If I am looking at a horse I want to claim (which means its a runner) and it looks 110% in the paddock then it's probably been blocked. By the same token, I don't want to see a horse limping around either. There are faults I can live with, others I prefer not to. I don't care for tendons. Here today, gone tomorrow.

.

Sipp was the first Scott Lake on the Philly/NJ circuit. He had a Horse in the Haskell a loooong time ago. Sipp's got land. Big Land, 45 minutes west of Philadelphia, 90 minutes south of NYC. He don't need the money. He was described here at Suffolk as a racing scys dream. He filled a lot of races as a favor. He does have one in every race here. He won nothing at Mnr. His horse's just aren't good enough to win there.

We've seen Horse racing resurrect Deader Ghosts. He's trying to make a go of it. He's been denied everwyhere. Just the fact he went to Mountaineer. entered frequently, followed the rules and kept to his business might help elsewhere. He was given stalls at Delta Downs, then had them taken away before he could enter a horse. If he runs at Suffolk until the end of the year someone may take him for the winter. Not Pennsylvannia. He's deader than dead there. But somewhere.

05-28-2005, 08:39 PM
Sipp got the OK for stalls in LA a couple months ago. It was too late to go this year but he'll probably be there next winter. My roommate was his blacksmith here at Mountaineer. I know of Sipp's backform, but what I saw here was a man with some money enjoying the game.

What's even stranger still:

I did some checking. This is a pretty substantial forum, for horseracing at least.

As best as I can tell, in only 4 days, this thread has made the top 25 if not the top 20 most viewed thread ever on this board.

The current record, with over 7,000 viewings, (more than twice as this one right now) was recorded in the Off Topic thread regarding the Terry Schiavo case. And that thread lasted, well, I'll kindly say, a lot longer than 4 days.
