When selecting a pace line for horse in turf races[we don't have dirt races here in New Zealand]
Would I be better off selecting a pace line within the last 5 starts or within say the last 12 months which is what I have been doing.

I can not answer your question, but I can give you some pointers so you may be able to answer it yourself.
Have you made a track model? If so try it for various pace line selections. Go over past races that you have the results charts for and try different pacelines there.
It is dull boring work but that is what is required of most of us untill we know what we are doing.

Keep us posted if you find anything that works. Our turf races do not usually lend themselfs to pace handicapping methods. The class, breding, and people players do best here. At least for the tracks I follow.

After analyizing matchups, trainer intent, form, surface, class movements, post position, pace, and all that rubish...Pick out a couple pacelines that reflect how you think the horse will run today. Go back 12 if you need to...
Just ask youself, "How will the horse run today", chug and then plug.

Pacelines don't include any running postions or frational times do they?
I guess I would ask what you would do with a paceline
once you had it?
Final times in turf races is pretty meaningless, so what else do you have to work with?

Tom,

Dunno about other programs but this is what it looks like when I do PL selection picking PL's from Quirin style PP. Has all the pace info I'm looking for. Below is what what I came up with for Hallowed Dreams last race using manual PL seleciton. Caution: The columns will not line up so it is going to look real messy.

Columns look great on my screen (although it is a bit long towards the right).

What program are you using?

GR1,
I meant using foreign turf lines-what can you do without fractions and beaten lengths?

Program looks just about like MPH.
I like the layout of the race you get.

Tom,

True, not as good for turfers and especially for the foot and mouth infected types.

HTR print out looks just like MPH cause it was written by the same individual.
