...on behalf of long-time trainer and current 83 year old buzzard, Warren Stute. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7738377/

It's happened before in recent history.

80 year old buzzard and long-time owner Paul Mellon along with 80 year old buzzard and long-time trainer Mack Miller, neither of whom had won the Derby, brought Sea Hero to the Derby in abysmal form in 1993. And he won. See form here http://www.drf.com/tc/trail/2004/derbywinners.pdf (no sign-in required). What's even more suspicious is that he only went off at 12.9:1 in the 19 horse Derby field after coming in 4th in the Blue Grass at 7.7:1 in a 9 horse field. Evidently, The Gods of Horseracing make bets. And, bizarrely, after returning to his abysmal form for the next 3 racing he rose from the dead again to win The Travers!!! And at only 6.7:1!!!!

You've been warned.

Abysmal??? Not to those of us who bet him. A classic example of "stubbing one's toe" on the way to the big dance and the crowd quickly forgetting them. Bred to run at classic distance and condtioned by one of the most conservative trainers on earth.

He must have stubbed his Classic toe again on the way to the Preakness and the Belmont :D
