He challenged ideas and advanced the sport, for that alone he gets respect.

I'm definitely a fan, both of his writing and his work.

Great writer and probably has done more to market the sport than all that NTRA crap combined.

Thanks, CJ
I sure hope to listen in.
I love Andy Beyer......and as a DRF reader, of course I use his figs.
However....that said......isn't Andy notorious for picking LOSERS in the Derby?
In case I miss this chat, would someone please post us his SELECTIONS????
;)
With the "BEYER THROW OUT FACTOR" we should have a better shot with our bets on the Derby!

They always post the transcript the next day, I'll be sure to post the link. His figures have done a good job in the Derby, its just him that hasn't!

Thanks Zaf!

You know.... Andy just make break his jinx this year! He can't lose them all, can he? LOL
I think I'll be a contrarian and bet his picks! Hey, I'm sure of one thing....they will be an overlay! :D

He appears to really like Bellamy Road. He believes his 120 Beyer is legit !

Well, the skinny little fella was in rare form tonight. Incredibly, I agree with him on several points.

What I found interesting was the way he seemed to contradict himself a little bit. In response to a question regarding whether he thought Bellamy Road would regress off his performance in the Wood, he replied:

I doubt that he'll run a 120 again on Saturday, but I am not concerned about a "bounce" that will cause his defeat. The weeks before the Derby are a time when 3-year-olds can come to life suddenly and run raises as they've never done before. Just because they've made a new "top" doesn't mean they're going to bounce. Often they've just found themselves as athletes and they keep on going. It happened with War Emblem. It happened with Charismatic. Going back a few years, it happened with Pleasant Colony.

Then, in response to a question asking him if he would be using Greeley's Galaxy, he was emphatic in his reply:

Despite his solid Illinois Derby number, no. I still put a lot of stock in the lessons of history about the overall preparation a horse needs, and Greeley's Galaxy has two strikes against him: he didn't start as a 2-year-old, and he has only 4 career starts. Moreover, he had a fairly soft trip beating a weak field in Illinois.

I believe that Greeley's Galaxy did the same thing as Bellamy Road, just on a lesser scale. He moved forward a lot. If he repeats the performance on Saturday, he just might be wearing some roses. I also like that he doesn't need the lead.

Then, he was just plain sarcastic and funny. A person asked, "I see alot of people talking about Andromeda's Hero, What are his chances?" The thin shouldered one replied, "You're the only person talking about Andromeda's Hero. He has no chance whatsoever."
I love Derby week. I love Derby day even more. I'm going to get my mint leaves, confectioner's sugar and Maker's Mark tomorrow.

My favorite quotes:

Q: much is being written about drugs and the care authorities are taking this year. Do you believe the drug "problem" is severe?

ANDY_BEYER:If you've been watching races for the last few years, you should have been able to deduce that the drug problem is beyond severe; it's out of control and it's ruining the game. Every track iln the country now has miracle-working trainers who can claim or buy a horse and move him up 20 points overnight. Trainers have become the most important single factor in the game.

Pimlico, however, can't go much farther downhill since it's already such a depressing dump.

illini82:Q: why are the California horses getting no respect?

ANDY_BEYER:Because they stink. A winning figure of 98 in the Santa Anita Derby is pretty pitiful.

Regarding the middle quote about Pimlico, I tried my best today to wager and watch that track today. I can't do it. I'm almost physically ill. They just had a late scratch at the gate, and apparently that meant these pathetic nags needed another 10 minutes to mill around behind the gate before loading. I'm out, I imagine I'll watch exactly two races a year at Pimlico, and that's only in years they can actually afford to run the Pimlico Special.

Terrible racing and very short fields. Maryland racing is in big big trouble. I still have the feeling that the improvements at Laurel are the end for Pimlico

Beyer's actually a funny guy. I asked him about Abbondanza in the BC Sprint in a chat in October. His exact words...

I guess we've been receiving a lot of questions about Abbondanza. Is there mass hysteria about? He won't make the early lead.

Actually, Andy, he did. ;)
