heard this guy RICHARD SAUERS on LOUISVILLE sports talk show.

The first chapter defines the 110 major races and then lists them all.
Sowers explains in detail the factors by which he compiled the list .The following chapters analyze the data in the following categories:
Horses, jockeys, trainers, owners, stallions, dams, broodmare sires, sirelines, and place of birth.
Each chapter begins with a analysis of the data, ranking horses in various ways.

seems to be a book for horse racing fans who love stats. he said something
i thought was interesting:the record times at distances for 6 and seven furlongs
have been in the last 10 years,and the record for distance horses{IN EXCESS}
at the MEADOWLANDS was in 91, the most recent for a mile and a quarter.

he said that confirms what many have already thought:the "breed for speed"
philosophy" of the farms has diminished the "classic" horse and made the breed
more fragile.

That is still my overall belief, but then most of the Calder records are the same period. I think sometimes lone speed can win there despite the deep cushion.
Consider Jockey club stats- every year since 1992 there fas been a decline in the average starts per horse.
