It has been said by a long term winning gambler that "more money is lost by players who know the right thing to do is, but don't do it, than for any other reason".
What is the most destructive pattern you fall prey to in your parimutuel activity on a regular basis.? my nemesis is the occasional incorrect phone wager (playing the wrong number and having cost me money from the mistake).there are others but this has cost me plenty in the past. look forward to your valued responses.

Mine is playing exacta when I should play win, playing trifectas when I should play an exacta, or sticking with a win or exacta and then the trifecta comes in 4 figures !

Mine is forcing bets when I am not focused on the races.
Richie :)
Don't know so much about making mistakes but I met a real tough player whose motto was "Not only must I win but my friends must lose."

And don't forget, Doug, you must be better than the 'dummies' AND overcome the takeout. You know the takeout on the exotics outside of California? By and large, 25% and up!

Mine? Failing to bet my odds line after spending a couple of hours making it.
Reason: paying too much attention to the "iron monster", the tote board and talking myself out of an overlay because he was "too long and didn't have a chance," or ignoring my line and going with a sharp bet-down on the board and then watching my overlaid selection cruise to victory.
I don't make these mistakes anymore, but in the past......

I didn't refer to anyone as a dummie.
I think what was meant by that statement was that if you and your mother each play a different horse in a given race you want her to lose otherwise you won't win.

That's not true. Because if she loses often enough, she'll wonder why you keep chasing money on a sport where one always loses. Last thing you want is a mother who thinks that you're a degenerate.
My weakness has always been chasing bets & money management, especially when winning with the latter.

Mine is second guessing myself. Doubting my original opinion and being afraid to make the bet.
I run in cycles with this, it's weird.....if I could ever figure it out........I'll let y'all know! ;)

If she is losing and you are winning how could she think you are a degenerate?
The concept here is that others must lose for you to win. That is what pari mutual betting is all about. If you are a Real Tough Players it does not matter if those other folks are friends, relitives or anyone else.

Actually, I kinda liked that.
Actually, I kinda liked that.
Pretty cold but thats most likely the mindset a tough player must have.

Mine is......When I think I am hot......I'm not !

Hello all...I am new here, just joined today, but thought I would share my opinion on this one. I think the biggest problem I have is finding a handicapping/betting strategy that works for me, and do well with it. Then I read/learn/try/incorporate something new into it and mess it all up. I am always reading and studying handicapping and I think it tends to mess with my mind at times. This usually happens when I think I have a sure play, only to think of something I recently read and change my mind (then it wins at 12-1 or something like that...ugh!). The irony is that I signed up for this website hoping to learn more...:D ...so I'll probably screw my head up even more! Also, I think I need to learn to pick my spots better, and not try to play catch-up when I am in a slump (that'll kill your profits for the year!).

:) Keeping accurate records is paramount in this business. You'll soon find out what really works. Then you must stick with it. Welcome and good luck! :)

Beer 'n' Horses:
Welcome to the board. My advice for dealing with the kind of indecision you mention would be a combination of taking advantage of established, regularly recurring probabilities that are present in each of the major handicapping areas (that is, playing with the percentages of the game rather than against them, which provides a basis for greater confidence in wagering), while also accepting that no horse is ever a 100% guaranteed winner, and that racing will always throw some results at you that you can't logically account for, so that you aren't continually revamping your whole strategy every time the results of a particular race don't go your way.
