On top of the list is speed and then probably pace.
Near the bottom are trainer stats.

I'm not sure about factors, but every horseplayer knows the most reliable events in horse racing:

1. Bad racing luck for my horse;
2. Even worse racing luck for my horse;
3. Acts of God against my horse;
4. Bad stewards' decision-- DQ'd my horse;
5. Got in line with too many superfecta players, got shut out of winning bet;
6. Got in line with those people who stand at the machines, alternately
looking at a tip sheet and the roof, apparently waiting for providential
guidance-- got shut out of another winning bet
7. Finally able to get a bet in, horse finally got clean trip-- ran dead last;
8. Finally won, but the rebate whales destroyed the price at the end;
9. Bad food at the track-- tummyache;
10. Flat tire on the way home;
11. Cycle will repeat itself the next day, and the next, and the next...

...the dominant reliable factor is bet value... pure and simple.
If a horse that has a 'pulse' and a shot in a race and is 50-1, god even I would get in the starting gate and give it a try!!

PRICE, PRICE PRICE!!!..... makes up for a world of sins. PRICE, not speed figures, is "the way, and the truth and the light".

Or as my teacher published in a re-take on a famous Damon Runyon quote:

"The race may not always go to the swift, AND that is the way to bet!"

Early speed; ITM finishes; race placement by a good trainer.
