View Full Version : I see the Devil has arrived at NYRA tracks
5.5-furlong races now for older horses. I had never seen a race less than six furlongs at a NYRA track, except for 2YO's.
At the rate things are going, here's the 2035 Breeders Cup:
Sprint - 2 furlongs
Juvenile Fillies - 4.5 furlongs
F & M Turf - 5 furlongs
Turf - 5 furlongs
Juvenile - 5 furlongs
Distaff - 5.5 furlongs
Classic - 6 furlongs
The Mile will be replaced by a new dirt race spanning from the position of the 6f starting gate to the timing beam at the 3/4 pole. (And they'll run it at Pimlico.) "They're off, it's a photo finish, oh my!!" croaks Durkin between swigs from the oxygen tank. Denman will explain how unlucky the European entry was because it would have surely won had it not broken slowly. Battaglia and Neumeier will shake their heads in amazement at how competitive and exciting the new event is. Some of the horsemen will complain that the distance is too long.
None of the horses in any of the races will have more than five starts under their belt.
Los Alamitos, here we come.

I dont understand what the big difference between 5.5 and 6f is? Most tracks routinely write races for 5, 5.5 and 6f,
The problem with 5.5 fulong races is that the second call position is not given in the past performances, it is at the 3/8 pole. And if you use formulator and look at the incemental fractions, you won't get anything usable wtih 5.5 races. DRF should really make a programming adjustment, even knowing that it is is not perfect, at least it would be something you could use. What they have now makes no sense.
Personnaly, I always looked at 5.5 races as for cheap horses with no stamina...which might well describe a lot of the stock at NYRA tracks these days. Perrhaps trainers will use these races to "Prep" their stock for the next big career moves - to Charlestown or Penn National! Or, for the world-famous New York breds, a 5.5 prep then a stretch out.....to Finger Lakes!
I kinda like those 4 1/2 F sprints at CT. About 2 years ago I despised them.
Whats next for me 330 yds

Most of those nags can barely finish at 4.5 furlongs! :D

Last year at Hawthorne we actually had one break down during the pre-race warmups in the home stretch area behind the starting gate for a two-turn race! It had to be euthanized on the spot, and the race was delayed for a good 10-15 minutes while that occured and they hauled the body off the track in the horse ambulance.
I don't remember if it actually broke something, or had a heart attack before the start of the race, may have been the latter. Anyway, it was sad, and yet strangely humorous in an embarasing/dark-comedic sort of way. I'm just glad it didn't happen during the race at full speed, in traffic, where others might have gotten hurt.

You got it. AQU is horrible: speed bias to no end; 5 horse sprints; multitude of coupled entries; profusion of NY bred races; sprint stakes; turf races run on cement, and absolutely the worst: MSW for NY bred.

The speed bias paid $15.60 in the fifth, thank you very much. That was the gift of the day....

I think the reason is to compete with other tracks, If your at a track and your horse only runs 5 1/2 and they only write 6 and 7/8, Im sure you will be on the next van leaving for smalltown.Granted these sprints are fast and short, They do produce excitment.I love these kind of races, Love the jockey to come back with melted goggles. This will also give more of a chance to the old allowance horses who can no longer run 7/8 but would be a bear going 5/8. These races will also produce more horses to fit certain conditions. I think its a great idea and Im sure with time, You will see full fields running in them. If they have these races at all levels you will see a increase of fields because you wll have a lot more shipins.

Im sure sir they wouldnt be so bad if you were the owner of a winner in one of them short fields.Give it a chance.

Isn't this time of year in NY always rough????
Big deal there was a 5.5F race. What about the 10F dirt races over the past few months? How many other tracks run 10F on dirt other than the obvious G1 races??

This is the truely dead time on the NY circuit. The top runners are still moving about if they are not running at Keeneland. Give a couple weeks. The ship wioll right itself once again

I'd like to see more 10 and 12 furlong races. In England races of 2 miles on dirt are common.
Problem in the U.S. is that the milkshakes probably wear off after 7 furlongs.
