Today's Wall Street Journal (3/21) has an article that the governor of Louisiana floated a trial balloon about raising the taxes on slot machines. This would either be an increase at racinos so that they would be in line with the regular casinos or increase taxes on both racinos and casinos. The casino companies responded strongly by saying the Governor doesn't understand the business or the importance of casinos to Louisiana (and the horse racing industry in the state).

For what it is worth, the state tax rates in LA for slot machines are based on revenues ( I assume this is the "drop" or amount wagered minus payouts). The rate for a casino is 21.5%, racino 15.2%, bar/restaurant 26%, truck stop 32.5%. According to the WSJ the governor suggested a 50% increase, which got the gaming companies crazy.

Not sure how this compares to other states. I believe the structure has not been established for Broward County yet. Makes you wonder how Jeb and the State Legislature will tax GP.

High tax to low are set in LA by these priorities:
Limited choice for truckers; drunks/ old ladies addicted to slots; smartest bettor with $2 alternative.
