View Full Version : Small Track Racing
Wife is out of town, so I'm up WAY past my normal bed time, playing a few night tracks. I'm watching Turfway and see a horse with a HUGE figure edge (15 points, about 6 or so lengths) going off at 5-2. This is as they load, with 0 MTP. I decide this guy is worth a bet. He sits chilly outside a few, but looks the winner every step of the way. As they near the stretch, and I see him take the lead, I can't help but notice my 5-2 drop to 8-5! Not 2-1, not 9-5, but 8-5. Now I know why I go to bed early. At least he won :)

Late action is common at Turfway and the will pays are telling. This is a track for tote master and the Chinese Doubles. And the huge form reversal due to the winterized racing surface.
Thanks for the info, I'll tread lightly!
Here is another Turfway-ism I guess:
Out broke rider
That is the actual comment for a horse! What the hell does that mean?

Horse left the gate without the rider, really.

You have to have watch those small tracks very close. I liked a horse at Hastings that was 30-1 early in the betting and stayed that way for awhile but then started to drop and by post time was 5-2. He did win.
I bet one at TP the other night that was 11-1 at 1 MTP and paid $10.20.
I also played Sam Houston. Wow, I had no idea the win pools were so small there.
Some tracks are just unplayable. I love playing Prairie Meadows but after the 4th of July the pools are so small that at 2 MTP you have to bet with $2,000 in the exacta pool or risk getting shut out. Then its just a matter of time before you get burned on a few payoffs and give up.

There was one at MNR last night that had about a 20 point edge and was 6/1 ML. Hoping I would get a price, and teh horse opened up at even money and never budged. You didnt bet that one did ya CJ
No, I had to sleep eventually! Did he win?

Being a harness guy Craig, I know all about small tracks and lower handles. Most of mine go up in price at the end. :D But that's just me. :D

The mid sized traacks have this problem too. Just now watched LRL race 7, Quick Punch was 9-5 nearing the gate on brisbets tote, a fair price for him. (Rodman called "the 9-5 favorite" approaching the gate"). Then it clicked to 8-5. Then next click, even money (not a fair price).
Last I saw, the win pool had 48k. Not large, but definitely not small either.
I was watching the 4th race at Penn National Friday Night and The #4 Pollys Folly took a 5 length lead at the 1/4 pole and was 3-1. As she was coming into the stretch she was 3-2

If a horse pops out of the gate and opens a quick open length lead at Penn National (or the Penn owned Charlestown) you can usually expect to see a drop in odds, and sometimes it's a large drop.
