I know that myself and OTM Al were planning on doing this. I figure we can use this thread to keep all the picks we use daily to keep going.

Right now for the first day, I am leaning towards Falconer in the first or maybe Perfectly Quiet in the 3rd,

BetHorses!

Buddha,

Perfectly Quiet only has to beat 2 horses. He might be better play in contest.

Also Rises the Phoenix looks like solid chalk in the 6th

Beat me to the punch on this one Buddha. Figured this would be the place for the thread too. I've decided to go with Perfectly Quiet, the 2, in the 3rd. He's stepping up a bit, but he has solid and consistant BSFs and is 4-2-1-1 on the inner. Being that its only a 5 horse race and 2 of them don't look competitive, he looks like a pretty safe bet to me.

Alas I'm also going with Perfectly Quiet....though maybe it looks TOO safe.

Steve 'StatMan'
03-16-2005, 12:11 PM
Guess its safe to tell everyone I used Perfectly Quiet, and put it in last night. Small field, 3 very like, 1 maybe and one getting paid to work out (5th in a 5 horse field). If he should scratch, the likely favorite in a field of 4 with only 3 with serious talent would be very likely.

By the way, did you know that after all the days entries are in, you can go to the standings pages, and click on anyone and find out the horse they selected that day?

Of course, I had to stop looking at all those - was taking up too much of my time trying to project how the leaders/co-contenders were doing. Since I obviously have never won Showdown, I'd probably be better off getting ready for the next day's picks, provided I make the current day.

I'm out there as "Stat Man Steve". Who else (by Showdown Name) are we rooting for?

Buddha
03-16-2005, 12:12 PM
After the scratches, I ended up with Did He Biteyou in the 2nd. I liked him a bit yesterday, and after the scratches, he only has to beat 1 horse.

OTM Al
03-16-2005, 12:57 PM
Yeah...Perfectly Quiet did have that scary "too safe" look, but so many of the races looked very competitive today that safe was the only way I could go.

It is true, you can click on any stable and it will show you what the player has done. It didn't show what everyone's current pick was until the lock time (12:45) or after before, though, so if it was showing that before I am a bit surprised. Frankly, I plan on posting what I'm going to do when I enter it. No one elses pick is going to make me change my mind and I would hope no one is looking to me for advice :)

I believe I should be listed as Al_C in the contest. I always fear the first day of these......

OTM Al
03-16-2005, 01:34 PM
Buddha is clean with the winner in the second! As I write this, Perfectly quiet is the early favorite in the 3rd at 1/4. I know fear.....

OTM Al
03-16-2005, 02:02 PM
Nasty loss for 8%. Now I can relax having made it through the first day. Looks like we all had a win.

Steve 'StatMan'
03-16-2005, 02:10 PM
Yes, on to Day 2.

I'm sure those with Stormy Grand Bank must be upset. Suicidal 22 2/5 1st quarter alone on lead by 10+ lengths in a 1 1/8 mile race. Perhaps he's just unratable speed, perhaps he was rank, or bad instructions or bad ride. "Just go for the lead" - "OK!", and the horse just used himself up. Oh well. No matter now. On to Day 2.

Live to fight another day. The 2nd & 3rd races are the ones that usually
do me in . Looking for a short field and assume the Favorite can at least
finish 1st 2nd or 3rd. I didnt enter this time and Im happy I didnt
I liked Clear Intent and Stormy Grand Banks. Im sure I would have went with
Stormy Grand Banks.

OTM Al

70-some lost on the first day due to a scratch and the post time fav, who took out 70 some more finished 4th. But today is a new day.....

Unlike yesterday, there were a handful of horses I liked for today. Barring scratch, I'm going with Major Deegan, #5, in the 4th. Its a weak maiden group and he runs anywhere near his 2 back race, he wins by 10. For that matter, he replicates his last, he'll probably still be in the money.

Just noticed this thread today. Went with Perfectly Quiet yesterday, pretty much same reasoning everyone else used.

I was wondering how the tiebreakers work. I didn't see it on the contest site. I'm guessing based on number of 1st vs place and show, then maybe odds. Does the tiebreaker scenario come into your thinking at all? Or do you just go with your personal favorite for the day and hope to be in it long enough to worry about tiebreakers later.

If I was thinking towards tiebreakers I might go with #6 Whatatrophy Rack in the 6th race, otherwise I'm still considering. I'll post my selection when I select for the contest.

OTM Al
03-17-2005, 09:45 AM
The tie-breakers are much as you say. I wouldn't worry about them as usually they don't come into play, though they did in the last contest. For me, I pick a horse that I am most sure that will finish in the money, not neccessarily win, but just keep me alive.

OTM Al
03-17-2005, 12:00 PM
Stuck with Major Deegan in the 4th. Golder Than Gold was my backup choice btw. He looks pretty good there too. Copper Top looked interesting in the same race, but lack of inner track running always makes me a little shy.

Steve 'StatMan'
03-17-2005, 12:28 PM
I had strange feelings about the card last night too. Thought at few horses could jump up and surprise. Decided on a couple races with hopefully a fewer surprises lurking.

Race 2: Harbor House - Improved in his return, and most of the field hasn't done much. If the improvement is real, should have enough desire and ability vs. the rest.

Race 7: Big Sid's Party - Stalker that likes the distance.

I think some fall out on the first day because they forget the start of the contest. It happend to me one time - signed up well in advance, but completely forgot about it. I work from home in the mornings, and it totally slipped my mind - wiped out my multiple entries. I can handle losing, I just hate doing something stupid like that. :bang:

Top 6 picks today
Harbor House 21% Major Deegan 6 %

Make My Day Jur 6%

21% out with harbor house. Didnt see the race, what happened?

Steve 'StatMan'
03-17-2005, 01:39 PM
Steve, those were the other two I was thinking about, but ended up on golder than gold

May be a good thing you went that way. Harbor House dueled out (3h duel in a 5h race). The duelers were outfinished, Harbor House about a neck behind the 3rd horse, that he'd dueled with.

Mixed blessings. 21% of the entries (roughly 500 entries) just bit the dust, although 4 of those were mine. Now I'm holding my breath hoping I get at least one of the two home.

OTM Al
03-17-2005, 01:48 PM
Big ouch on Harbor House. He's the kind I tend to stay away from with that one big fig in the last, but nothing else near there before. I've lost that way and won too, but the price on such a horse usually makes the losses pretty easy to bear.

OTM Al
03-17-2005, 02:31 PM
Whoops......:(

Steve 'StatMan'
03-17-2005, 02:33 PM
Yes, thankfully at 3/5 odds, I had no desire to bet her.

Oh well. I took 8 entries, and I often split them among 2 horses when things look too iffy. Splitting them, as long as I win at least one, I can make 3 mistakes and still be alive. 4 errors and I'm out, or single/both out in one day, and I'm out. Sometimes keeps me around a while, but I haven't cashed anything so far.

4th Race just finished. $75.00 winner wtw. Major Deegan tired from third and ran out at 1/1. Took another 6% of the entries (about 150) with him.

OTM Al
03-17-2005, 03:05 PM
Good pick. Wish I would have used him, but so it goes. Didn't see my race but the chart says Major Deegan stumbled badly at the start, but managed to be up to 3rd by the first call. Looks like the type of ride that drives me up a wall. Jock has a problem at the gate, so he blows all of the horse's energy to get him up in contention until he burns out before the finish. I hate when they do that, especially when I have him.

Well, looks like those of you who made it through today will have considerably less competiton. Good luck to all. I'll be popping back in anyway though.

PS They sure know how to kick a guy when he's down.....

Your selection for Aqueduc4 2005 SHOWdown failed to finish in first, second or third. You have been eliminated from the online contest. Thank you for playing.

does anyone know what happens if you scratch onto the favorite, but the favorite is a 1/1A entry with both running? Do you get both horses, if not how they decide which you get?

Would be good to know for the future (assuming I have a future beyond today).

OTM Al
03-17-2005, 03:28 PM
From the Official Rules

In the event that a contestant's selection is a scratch or declared a non-starter for pari-mutuel wagering purposes, the contestant receives the actual betting favorite in that respective race. If the actual favorite is a coupled entry, the contestant receives the entire entry and is credited with the best result of the horses that make up that entry.

Steve 'StatMan'
03-17-2005, 04:12 PM
Yeah, I didn't know how to break it you. Sorry chickenhead :(

It's a tough contest - use the part of the entry that gets scratched, and end up on the favorite, not the entry mate. Use a non-entry and get scratched, you get the favorite. If the favorite is an entry, you get all of them (the only time anyone gets more that 1 horse in a race).

Sucks having used the entry half that scratched, and the unknown (to us) but apprently better half (in the connections mind) of the entry stays and wins, and that's not the one you end up with. :(

When I said bizzy trick should bounce I was going to tell you to look at the boston horse for he looked like he was going to move forward alot. If you go to cj`s figures you will see how he was going to move forward.
Bizzy trick had just won with a 71 and his next race was a 82 which mite of taken something out of him jumping 11 points forward . However, on to bostons first 2 starts were back to back 55`s which usually means a good forward move. He then moved forward to 57 and won then to 60 and won with small forward moves, so he should have a good forward move at a good price and he did. Sorry I didnt bring it to your attention yesterday, @ $41 bucks and bizzy trick ran second.....jp

I think that is an understatement. I will never forget the one day I was watching TVG and he won a race at HOL, and then you saw him running down from the stands, and saluting, and then to the TVG cameras kept saying, I am innocent or guilty. Still doing battle. I had Rebenga in the 6th for the Win. Tough to pick a horse off 1 race but he seemed so overwhelming even before the scratches.

199 left....I'll try to stick around

Good going! Only in week 3 and less than 200 left and your picks have been very good. The Darwinian survival battle gets much hairier from here on out but you're looking really good

Thanks Al. I am as good as my last pick though. My first time in this contest and I am enjoying it.

Has a PA member ever won this NYRA showdown?

I dont believe so. I know Joe Martin (WinManWin) Cashed in the Top 10
on several entries last year. Got a few thousand back.
If Joe see this Im sure he can tell you the exact amount of money and what
places he finished in. I believe he had to go though a lot of B/S (paperwork)
to get his money. It took some time .

Thanks for the link Jimmy. Pretty impressive record by Joe (10-4-3) to finish 4th AND 6th.

Al and Suff-thanks for the nice comments

As for today I went with Kazoo #6 8th race to stay alive

Hey, we got to support our own. Besides, you take down the pool we know we can cage beers off of you if we ever meet up :)

Seriously though keep it rolling! Buddha and I got down into the last hundred last fall and it was pretty exciting. Unfortunately we had the same horse and he slipped and fell down in the turn as he was making his move. He wasn't hurt, but it was a crummy way to end. Got a feeling much better is in store for you.

Well I went with Coast Line #6 in the 8th Race today. I figure most people will take Offlee Wild and then Coast Line. I have stayed away from the Dutrow horses so far and this is the second time I have not selected my top number. The other time was Sensibly Chic over Cativa and Cativa ran out. Lets see what happens

I was rooting for you horse to be 3rd, but I really hated Coast Line today.

Exacta Box Aqueduct, Race #8
3.Offlee Wild, 5.Rogue Agen...
100.0

He was a frontrunner (E type) that had no shot at making the lead, and also only had my third best numbers in the race. That said, sounded like I was lucky to get second, only have audio with BRIS vid being down!

A very nice run by you though, hats off!

I did not know the figures were back, I might have checked as I do respect your numbers and you do a great job on your web page. I hope it all works out. I presume Coast Line's low final performance fig last out was due to the slow pace.....but I still made a big gap between Dutrow and Pletcher and the other 3, thought it was a safe play anyway but I guess you can't kiss all the pretty girls....I'll try again at Beautiful Belmont

D-

thanks for the kind words, AC won't have enough cash to pay us when we're done there in May ;)

Just thought I'd let everyone know that NYRA is showing signup begins for the Spring Showdown at Belmont on Saturday with racing begining May 4. We should replace this thread with that one. Buddha, did PA set that up for you this time? Also, I would expect that they will run their fantasy challenge again this year, which is a free contest where you select as stable of horses, a couple jockeys and trainers. Always do pretty bad in that one  though but it is free.
