Have a good friend who works at Woodbine who believes that on VERY HOT days the grounds tends to BREAK AWAY from horses...can't understand how that would aid/distract any ONE horse, but he seems to believe it retards front end runners. Anyone ever heard of such a thing??

I might be very mistaken here, but isn't 'that the old "cuppy" racetrack trainers used to talk about a lot?
Always a big excuse when their horses didn't run well. "Track was too 'cuppy' today for them."

But wouldn't it effect the entire field the same way??

How hot is "VERY HOT" in Canada?

Ken, You are almost pissing me off!

WO is in Toronto, which is south of Detroit... not directly south, but ...

my idea of Hot is in the range of 33+ degrees C. (that is Canadian for 91 degrees F.) and makes the seat of the golf cart dangerous to bare skin... gotta wear long shorts! :p

what 46zilzal's friend meant by hot, i can't tell you, but i bet it is the same as hot in most of the US.

by the way, check the weather in Pen, and WV today vs 15C here in cranbrook (and sunny here!)

Favor front runners.
I have no stats, but I'm sure this is true.

The limestone/gravel/limestone makes for relatively fast drying of the track, could be causing the effect.
Woodbine:
1 mile oval with a 7 furlong and 1 1/4 mile chutes.
85 feet wide.
6% banking on turns.
Distance from 6 furlong start to finish turn: 1,650 feet.
Distance from final turn to finish line: 975 feet.
3 1/2" sandy loam cushion, loose.
3" sandy loam cushion, compacted.
6' limestone screening.
3' B gravel drainage.
6" limestone screening, native clay
