Cancelled tonight because of a frozen track. Bunch of rain yesterday, and sub 20 temps last night and today.

Add Philly to that. Foggy, and horses having problems with footing. I don't blame the jockeys a bit.

Of course simulcast wagering will remain open at Philly, and I'm sure the casino at Mountaineer didn't shut down. :p

Just like Mountaineers slogan. We'll leave the slots on for ya :) Trackside gaming rooms are closed, but the hotel side is all open

Add Freehold harness to that. They stopped after race 4. It must be really bad out East if a harness track won't finish their card.

Monticello is still racing, albeit with delays. They're going straight to the starting gate from the post parade. I wouldn't be surprised if they cancelled shortly.

Back in the lean low-purse, pre-simulcast days, Mountaineer, Charlestown and Shenandoah used to race in all kinds of weather. It was necessary so that everybody (track and horsemen) could pay the bills (In fact, Charlestown was the first cold-weather track in the U.S. that ran regular winter meets (December of 1933)). Now that the purses are pumped up due to simulcast and slots, the horsemen are a little more secure financially than they used to be, and they aren't willing to risk life and limb like they used to be (and I don't blame them a bit for that), and the smaller tracks don't care because they don't lose much in the way of revenue. What they get from on-track and simulcast wagering on their races is offset by nothing being paid out in purses, either, and they still take simulcast wagering on other tracks.

Do cancels cost you a days pay? Or do they offer you alternative? Like working in the casino or hotel? Or is it just ....we canceled... you lose? What if they bring you and cancel? You get anything? Northeast tracks are unionized and they have some protection against mother nature....do you?

Nope, today I lose a days pay. Sometimes when they cancel late, we are already there and have to at least stay for a little while and I get some pay, but to is a non paid day off.
