Am going to be in Rhode Island this weekend and am thinking about going to the Newport Grand to watch saturdays races. Anyone ever been there?

I went there for years until November '02. I've been told recently they have condensed the betting areas to one and it is all smoking. They had about 7 large screens, 6 small and 75+/- carrels with audio/video. My guess is a weekend would be crowded.

Also, there are no more than 10 tellers and several automated terminals as of a year ago.

The website http://newportgrand.com provides a calendar but little else.

It was pretty much how you describe it. Completely surrounded by slots. No smoking in simulcast area now, but the haze does roll in from the slots on either side. Did give track prices. Was ok, but not great, but would go back when I'm up there again.
