Bad Grammar?

I have a few friends who are and were editors for a major NY newspaper. One is writing a book on the history and meaning of words. The question came up at a recent dinner and we all got into a good discussion about it.

Give it some more thought.. I'd like to run your answers by him.

"What is 6 times more THEN 20?" makes no sense. 6 times more THAN 20 should be 120, but no one should speak this way. It would simply be "what is 6 times 20," or maybe "what is 6 more than 20." If you speak improperly, you leave much room for interpretation.

So, if I asked how many more laps I have to run, and you said "6 times more then 20" I would run 26, unless of course I dropped dead before finishing!

Consider that the term “more THAN” implies addition.

(example 6 apples “more than” 4 =10)

“Times” of course implies multiplication.

If you ran but 6 laps “more than” my 20
You ran 6+20 = 26 laps

But what if you had run 6 times “more than” my 20?

Then;

You ran 6 times 20 + 20= 140 laps...
Correction, my friend’s book is about “grammar”.

You are confusing THEN and THAN.

Have it whichever way you like it.. :)

what about the logic??

As Bill said a while back, it is bad grammar. It is either 6 more than 20, or 6 times 20. Have a nice day.

More than 20 is 21

6 times 21 is 126

How about 6x20=120...or...20+6x=140

Bad Grammar?

Bill, I did a spell and grammar check using Microsoft WORD.
WORD accepted it without comment.

There is an end to this, but I don't want to get to it just yet.

Upon further review, I'd say:

6 X 20 > -> 20

-> means "then"

There is no answer because there is no question logically being asked.

ok,

if the question is "What is 6 times more THAN 20?"

the answer is infinity or unsolvable, because there are an infinite number of values greater than 20.

That is true, but this one is only 6 times more than 20.

x = 20 - (y + (6y))

Who do you like in the 3rd? (It's after the 2nd and six times before the 9th.)

I'll volunteer and throw out "more than 120".

Might be best to deliver the "payoff" to the question before too much longer.

Buckeye: I also differ with you conclusion

What is 6 times more then 20?

If you (logically) accept that the above statement means:

What number is 6 times greater then the number 20, then obviously the answer is 140.

6n + n = X, if 20 = n, then 6n + n equals 140

If this is true, then opposite must also be true: What is 6 times less then 140?

Or logically,

What number is 6 times less then the number 140.

140 = 6n + n is 140 = 7n, then n = 20

The easiest way to interpret the original question is to put it into its simplest form:

What is 0 times more then 20? Ans. 20
What is 1 time more then 20? Ans. 40

Logically it works because the math operations are listed in a specific order: Multiplication first, then Addition.

When you change the order of the math operations then you have an infinite answer.
What is more then 6 times 20? or
What number is greater then 6 times the number 20?

(I also agree that this is in the wrong section.)

Lots of Luck.

So what's the answer?

Who am I supposed to be betting on?

(or should that be whom ) :)

It would help to know when (date), where (track) and who? (which horse).

Also how much should I put on him?

I shouldn't jump into these threads, but what the hay.

The question what is 6 times more then 20?

Infinite. Any operation done before the word "then" is irrelevant. Because we don't know what operation the word "then" implies, is it adding 1, dividing by 20, performing incremental odds analysis, etc. Therefore "then" implies a way to get to 20 since 20 must come next. There are infinite ways to get to 20 from wherever you are.

I was hoping for a number less than 20 since this is the Selection forum, and an answer less than 20 can actually be bet in the Kentucky Derby :cool:

Is it ok to say, "You have 140 apples, and I have 20 apples, therefore you have six times more then me." ?

Since I have 20 apples "You have 6 times more then 20"

x=20
6x =120
what is 6 times more then 20?
6x+x!
120+20=140

where "+" means "more then"

Uh oh, maybe we need some levity (or my feeble attempts at it, anyway).

Original Questions from Formula: "what is 6 times more then/than 20?"

When the question was first asked, it was about a day before the Super Bowl and all the expensive ad campaigns, I had a thought that this wasn't a mathematical question, but a set up for a new Pepsi Ad.

"What is 6 times more than 20?"
