Can anyone using the software let me know how the program is working for them. Thanks.

Stealth,

The program is working just great!! Hopefully you will take a test drive of the demo and find out for yourself.

The program offers many features and for me provides the tools I need. The data window allows for extensive testing of ideas and most any factor you might want to test against a database. Once the testing is complete, successful ideas can be built into a set of rules called a UDM. Every UDM you design can then be used to calculate the races for all tracks you play and a detailed report can be viewed online or printed out for executing your wagers.

Take a look and feel free to email me, or if you like, we could touchbase by phone when you have a chance.

Hope that helps,

Bill

Even a computer/ db idiot, like myself, can use it. Not only use it, but it allows you to develop/ experiment with profitable plays.

It's one thing to have profitable plays/ angles, but finding them in the pp's, daily, weekly, monthly, annually is very tedious, to say the least. With JCapper and the UDM's, it finds them for you, in a matter of minutes.

It is very adaptable to any way you handicap. Great program!

1- yes you have to make folders for the individual tracks

2-yes it takes 50- cent tsn files

I have a demo also and was wondering where I can find the 2 udm's that come with the program{or what letters they are]. I barely get by on a computer let alone designing a udm. Was told they each made money in 2004. thought I'd give his a try. thanks

Do you have to set up like equisim make your folder's etc.

The program's installer, right out of the box (well there really isn't a box it's a downlaod) will create a folder on your c:\drive named c:\2005. Running the program right out of the box, this folder is the Default Data Folder where downloaded past performance and results files are extracted to. But the program is adaptable. If a user doesn't like c:\2005 as a default data folder, he or she is free to create and utilize any folder structure desired for storing data and results files. This allows for file sharing between programs. If you are running another program on the same machine that has a required folder structure, you can use that same folder structure within JCapper. Some users choose to set up a folder for each track, others may have their own unique/custom folder configurations. Myself, I create a separate top level data folder for each year and then use four separate data folders beneath the year folder- one for each quarter. As users spend more time with the program, eventually they will want to build a database using their accumulated past performance data and results files. A separate database may be built for the data and results files sitting on each folder where such files are present. So design of folder structure is a subject that users may want to give a little consideration to.

And can you set it up for trainer and conditioning.Angle's

Absolutely! That's exactly what the program was designed to do.

In JCapper, the user sets up something called a UDM (User Defined Model.) A UDM is an electronically defined set of rules that can be permanently stored. Once that UDM Definition is stored, every starter from all of today's loaded race cards can be compared against the set of rules for all stored UDM Definitions in about 90 seconds. Those horses that fit that UDM Definition are very clearly "marked" and highlighted on the reports so that you can see them.

Better yet, once you have used the program to build a database, you can run any UDM Definition against the database and see how you would have done (in detail and in a number of different ways) had you played all horses identified by the set of rules contained in that UDM Definition.

A partial list of factors available to users for creating a trainer specific UDM:
Trainer Name
Rider Name
Owner Name
Track Name
Distance Today
Surface Today
Class
Age of Horse
Recent Activity (Days Last Start)
Recent Activity (Days Last Work)
XthStartOfOfLayoff
XthStartOfOfMeet
XthStartOnLasix
Distance Shift (Stretching Out/Shortening Up)
Class Shift (Rising/Dropping using Purse Value)

I have a demo also and was wondering where I can find the 2 udm's that come with the program{or what letters they are]...

The letters (and the meaning behind them) are:

DS_JCapper_OOB
Dirt Sprint JCapper out Of the Box

DR_JCapper_OOB
Dirt Route JCapper out Of the Box

You can view their definitions (table view) in the Profile Table Interface and in the UDM Wizard. After using the program to build a database, you can use the Data Window to run either UDM (or your own) against all of the starters in that database. When you do this, the complete UDM Definition is displayed in the results header area on the Data Window screen.

So far as the profitability of the two Out Of The Box UDMs for calendar year 2004, I'll (hopefully) let someone else with a fair sized database step up and post their results.

I hope I've answered your questions.

Yes. Those are the horses that fit the criteria of the UDM Definitions.

also I see the text just gives certain plays which are the same as the highlighted horses in the html

That's right, they are also listed separately on the text report. Why do this? The text report is simply a text file containing UDM plays for the day. The filename for each day's text report is c:\2005\AtAPrice.txt. Because it is a text file, it can be opened in Notepad simply by double clicking the filename from Windows Explorer. If you open it up in Notepad, you can add things to the file like your own wagers/trip notes/track bias notes, etc. You can save a permanent record of each day's activity by simply changing the name of the file: AtAPrice_012205.txt for example.

Listed below are the results of the Out of Box Udms against my database. However, I did modify the Out of Box Udms with regard to minimum odds. For the sprints I only play if they are 9/2 or better and for routes only at 9/1 or greater. This is my personal preference and Jcapper allows you to customize each UDM anyway you like.

Hopefully it will be adequate to see what the output looks like.

Question: (trying to learn about JCapper) From the above results, the way I see it is that you got a 10.8%Roi from sprints and a 66%ROI from Routes? Is this from straight flat bets? But when betting % of bankrool (sprints), it only shows a profit of $88 ?

What Hdcper has posted are results from the program's Data Window. I'll try and answer your questions by explaining what each section of what he posted represents and then provide some food for thought about money mangement.

Here goes...

First, the two out of the box UDMs aren't intended by me to be the crux of what a user can do with the program. Far from it. They are simply starting points where a user can go to learn about the type of things that might go into a UDM before setting off to create UDMs of their own. Many users have gone on to create UDMs that far outperform the two that come with the program. I included them with the program because I wanted to give the beginning user a solid starting point along with the ability to have a chance at making winning selections right out of the box. Hdcper has modified them for his own use to include only those selections going off above a minimum odds range for each. So be it.

The Data Window report posted by Hdcper is broken up into four sections.

The top section shows the UDM Definition with the Data Window settings that were used to produce the report.

The second section displays a summary based on a flat $2.00 bet (win place and show) for each selection produced by applying the UDM Definition against all horses in the database from which the query was run.

The third section shows a breakout of win bets on the plays produced by the query according to post time odds. As an aside, Hdcper could just as easily have chosen any of about 80 different factors to use as a breakout factor. He also could have chosen to display each individual play had he wanted to.

Which brings us to the last section:

Bankroll Eval based on win bets made on all of the plays produced by the query. The Data Window report displays what would have happened bankroll-wise had the following bankroll criteria been stricly adhered to, re-adjusting the bankroll immediately after the results of each play become known:

Starting Bankroll: $2500.00
Pct Bankroll each bet: 2.5 percent
Max allowable bet: $500.00

The intention of reporting this is to provide the player some guidelines for money management. Quite obviously, the order of wins in the query, along with the length of both winnnig and losing streaks, will affect bankroll size at the end of the query.

Personally, I find this particular area of study to be quite fascinating.

Actually, in Hdcper's first query (dirt sprints) had he adhered to the bankroll rules in the report, he would have lost $88.00 despite grinding out a flat bet profit.

What does this tell him? At 12 percent wins, 2.5 percent of bankroll on each play probably produces too much risk from an element of ruin standpoint. Very likely, a smaller percentage of bankroll bet on the same list of plays would have produced a higher ending bankroll.

His second sample (dirt routes) fared much better. How can this be? His win rate was actually lower. Yet applying the same strict rules for money management, he could have turned $2500.00 into over 50 grand!!!

Like I said, I find the area of money management and bankroll studies to be quite fascinating. It would be really interesting to know the longest losing streak and winning streaks from each sample.

All,
I'm surprised that more people on PA haven't taken advantage of the free 15 day trial. This software is easy to use, plus comes with ready to go UDR's. You can use either the Bris or Tsn files. The bulletin board is top notch and that can be said about Jeff, the originator, as well. Customer service is Jeff's top priority. Today in fact he satisfied a fellow handicapper with a requested program adjustment. How many programmers will do that. Should you like the program the cost is as reasonable as it gets, less than $300.

Jeff; you have two very good built in UDM's for sprints and routes. Between waiting for value with them and having all my trainer plays set up in the program it is a pleasure using it!!! You have one of the best programs out there my friend; whether you know it or not!!!

I'm the handicapper that Maxpa mentioned when he said that Jeff made an adjustment in the program just to make my life easier. This is not the first time he has done it. If you give him an idea that will improve the program, he will implement it. He has been terrific.

I can say the same about the program. Last week I hit an $1100 exacta playing my top 2 horses. There aren't a lot of programs that will give you mutuals like that

The only bad part of the program has been all the damn signers, but I'm learning to live with it

GP 4th race I played the J column #1

$90 horse.

Am I reading this thing correctly?

CapperLou
01-30-2005, 03:39 PM
Doug:

If you are using bris files the top rated J horse was #11---however the top rated C Pace horse was the #3 which was the $90+ winner. The C Pace is just in the first column when you look at the printout.

In a race like this one could have easily dutched the #3 & #11 and come up with the winner.

All the best,

CapperLou

P.S. You have to look at the columns on top and read down for the ratings in each column.

That's OK though--the program just picked the 25.80 winner of the 7th at AQU which was a DR JCapper play #4 Think Fast!!! Also picked the 7th race winner Coined For Success at 10.20. Good Luck Doug--and have fun!!!

Hi Capper Lou,

Have you been using J-Capper for a long time ?

ZAFONIC

CapperLou
02-02-2005, 10:34 PM
Zafonic:

I have been using JCapper for almost four months. On one of the threads about databases, I posted concerning my longtime search for a database that was user friendly and where I could set up my trainer plays and a few other plays and have them "pop up" each day when one was there in the tracks that I downloaded to play.

Jeff responded to that post and advised he had exactly what I wanted and I contacted him and downloaded a demo version.

Of course, besides the ability to do the database stuff easily--the program has it's very good J Rating and its two built in UDM's. I am delighted with everything about the software and Jeff has added things and been very helpful along the way. He has begun marketing it and my check is in the mail to him as I write this.

I use this program with Equisim and the two complement each other well IMO.

If you use the JRated top horse or the UDM's that come with the program and wait for value--I think you will do well---based on my four months of testing. The number of good priced winners has been remarkable--hope it keeps happening.

All the best,

CapperLou

ZAFONIC

CapperLou

Hey Zafonic:

I update my database weekly. Remember that the UDM's and the JRating will not change based on the results or trends--unlike the profiler for example in Equisim. You just make sure you have the data and exotic result file in the database and then select that database and hit button called build database. That will creat a new one or update the one you have selected. Onece you go into the data window afterwards, you can run queries at all tracks or selected tracks for different distances etc. utilizing the UDM for sprints or routes or just the JRating top horse or say the top three or two JRated horses etc. You can filter out ages of horses, use only those with medication and many other factors. Check the jcapper.com website and board or email Jeff and he will be glad to assist you--I am sure.

You can do queries and set up some of your own UDM's--because some might work better at different tracks etc. and make them track specific--sort of like most of my trainer plays.

There are a lot of possibilities--needless to say. Good Luck!!!!

All the best,

CapperLou

P.S. These UDM's and the J Rated top horse are the closest thing I have ever seen to a "black box" because the UDM's don't select plays in every race. You just have to wait for value and then "bet with one or both hands" as they say!!!!

I have been using JCapper for the last several weeks. I use it primarily as a data base tool. I have developed my own UDM's. All of my UDM's are Trainer plays based on an old "hand entered" db I have built each year, on Oaklawn Trainer's. Therefore, my UDM's are only as good as my old information. Yet they have worked pretty darn well. They have saved me hours of pouring over the form and looking for them. Not to mention the time saved on building my information for next year. They are found literally in seconds with JCapper. For me, they make playing the races fun again. I don't expect JCapper, or any other software, to be a "Black Box". Yet, there are a few built in UDM's that have worked pretty well. The Developer, Jeff P, is total class. I asked him to build me a "special report", which I am sure needed much "special" programmming. When I asked him for an approximate cost, he told me it added Value to the program, so there would be no charge. I am a very satisfied customer, in every way. The program does exactly what I wanted and expected it to do and I am still in the "learning curve".

I should mention that JCapper also has a solid Odds line, that I am too dumb to build for myself, plus several other evaluators. Early, middle and late pace are evaluated, as well as , Form.

(IMHO) Jeff has built software which allows the handicapper to evaluate the races their way and not the way of the developer. You can build UDM's any way your style, information or imagination directs you.

Thanks Jeff!!

Looking for some help.

When I use the scratch bot I seem to be having problems.

1. It takes forever and sometimes doesn't work at all. (user error I am sure)

2. I always get a pop up for the bris website. How can I keep that from happening.

Thanks for any help,

Doug

Doug,

Q. Are you using a dialup connection or a cable modem?

Q. Is Internet Explorer installed on your system or are you using a different browser?

Q. What version of Windows are you running?

Jeff,

I use a cable modem (dsl) and internet explorer with windows 98.

By the way I just posted on the message board with this same question

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,

I posted a reply on my message board that (hopefully) should be of help.

For anyone else with a similar experience, here's a link:

If that doesn't do it for you, email or call me and we can go from there.

For the folks on the board who have not done business with Jeff let me say that he is right on top of it and very very helpful.

If you want a software program that delivers exactly what it promises and an owner/programmer who will bend over backwards to make it more compatible with what you need, personally, JCapper is an outstanding product. One warning. For those people who like experimenting and testing with different factors and numbers, it can be habit forming

Hracingplyr. Don't just sit there and use the UDM's out of the box. Create your own. That's half the fun. I make them for all tracks, and individual tracks, classes and individual distances. When you get a couple that intersect it's very powerful.

I've been playing with this since 10-25 and I have nothing but good things to say about Jeff and his program. As proof I sent him a check the first day he finally set a price. I consider it a bargain

i think the software provider should provide the testers with a database to use. for instance i play aqu and gp there should be a database that i can download into my 2005 folder and work with it to see whats winning at those 2 tracks

using out of the box udm's has anyone tested to see how many losses in a row at any given track there have been.thanks

Legs,

I do use the out of box Udms Jeff was kind enough to include with the program. But on my own, I have added an odds requirement which might give you a false reading of what you were asking for (I am sure someone else using the exact out of box version will post what you are looking for).

However, I feel you might be looking for output of a UDM that has a strong hit rate and fair ROI. So I decided to post the results of one of my personal Udms I have built after testing on my own with the Data Window of the program. Everyone, I strongly recommend like Betchatoo, that experimenting with your own ideas is half the fun of this very versatile program.

Anyway, here are the results:

i think the software provider should provide the testers with a database to use. for instance i play aqu and gp there should be a database that i can download into my 2005 folder and work with it to see whats winning at those 2 tracks

Jeff has answered your request. See the JCapper message board. Damn, he's good

All,
The database files for the major tracks are available for UDM research. IMHO, this research is critical in making a profit with the JCapper software.
Big and necessary step for the software's users to develop their own modus operandi!

Hi All,

Just thought I would bring to your attention that the Jcapper Software had another triple digit winner at GulfStream in the 10th race on Sunday February 14th. This horse was the top rated JRating horse and paid $113.80 to win.

Another great opportunity for any user of the program!

Are you guys posting any JCapper picks anywhere? (Or should I say, are you posting the picks that YOU come up with using JCapper)

I just closed a thread where someone was touting the winners a particular piece of software had after the race. Don't really want to make it a habit.

i tried this out for the 15 day demo period and found it to be a complete failure, sure once in a great while someone comes on and says how it hit a 137 horse or a hundred dollar horse, but lets be honest by the time u hit those kind of horses you are well in the hole for over a hundred

Pace Advantage,

Funny but I don’t really understand the problem with posting an after the fact winning selection which can be verified by anyone testing out the demo of Jcapper (even if it is after the fact). In addition, in this same thread others have posted after the fact results and no similar criticism was noted. Hopefully the many that know me on this site, value my integrity and know I was only sharing the results of what I consider a high quality program.

Hracingplyr, sorry to hear you found the program a complete failure, but in my case just the opposite has been true. Like you said, lets be honest, a 15 day trial certainly doesn’t prove the success of the program one way or the other.

In closing, I hope this thread remains open and my innocence comments are taken as they were meant and not as anything else.

I apologize if I offended anyone,

Hdcper (Bill)

You can include me in the above, which is why I merely made a statement in this thread, and took no further action.

I have to be fair here. If I come down on someone who's first post ever on this board is nothing but a declaration of some juicy winner a computer software program "had", then I have to at least acknowledge that something similar is going on here....

But, maybe in this instance, and the prior instance where I closed the thread, I made a mistake. Hell, I'm not perfect, everyone on here knows that....

Carry on....

Mike,

This isn't a case of the individual user having to interpret the data to come up with the right horse. There's a feature in the program called Overlay Highlighting. The $100.00 horse mentioned by Hdcper, and the previous $100.00 horse mentioned by CapperLou, were both plainly marked as picks right on the program's HTML Report.

In both cases, each horse was the program's top ranked JRating horse for the race and was picked up automatically by Overlay Highlighting, provided the user bothered to check a box to enable it in System Settings.

The following links illustrate exaclty what each and every user of the program with Overlay Highlighting enabled saw on the report for both races:

ISLAND LORE (CapperLou's $100.00 horse)
jcapper.com/report_GPXR10_020205.html (http://jcapper.com/report_GPXR10_020205.html)

and

Jeff, I don't think I was ever trying to debate the validity of the selection. There is a fine line I have to walk when policing this site for unauthorized advertising. The poster's relation to the product, and all the other stuff they've contributed while here certainly are taken into consideration.

Of course I don't want to squelch talk of software programs. Hell, I love handicapping software as much as anyone on here. I've written a bunch myself, and even tried to sell some at one point many years ago (hench the origin of the name Pace Advantage). In fact, some of the old timers will remember when I was busted right here on my very own website for registering a second user name to tout my own software (mind you, the results I touted were all 100% authentic)!!! Right after that happened, I said "to hell with this....it ain't worth it!" So, not only have I been around the block, I've BEEN the block (whatever that means)!

But, I digress. Discussing a program's strengths and weaknesses is what this part of the forum is all about. I also love it when vendors come on here to add to the discussion, or to defend their product. However, posting about a particular winner, especially after the fact, doesn't come off looking so well to the more jaded among us....

Carry on....

It is fine line here. I guess I'm just as jaded about redboarding as many of the regulars here. But, in fairness to both Jeff and Hcper, I have been monitoring the demo version, and this particular pick was right on top. I didn't play it because I trying to understand how the software internally works, relative to making selections. Which shows you exactly how smart I was here!

The software, during the test period, seems to do a good job of finding good odds contenders. That's a primary test for me. Whether it will hold up long term is another question, but it's appears to be an interesting program worth checking out with more data.

Hope this helps the dicussion here.

I am learning to use Jcapper and still have so much to learn. The demo has a time limit and it stops working. I explained why I needed more time and Jeff didn't hesitate to extend the time. My impression of Jeff is that he is very helpfull and more important than that, he's just a real nice person.

When I first started using JC I was impressed with the potential that this program offers and everyday I gain more confidence and respect. I think that the udm's included with the program will eventually loose money because too many people will be on the same horses. The program offers other profitable udm's that can be found by those willing to do the research and they will continue to make money. We are all unique and udm's are dependent on creativity and willingness to succeed, we all have the potential.

This program is simular as far as making money to HTR and probably other programs. If the interest and effort are thier then the answers can be found. Both programs have excellent support from thier makers and the forums where guys help each other.

As another example I thought I would include one of the track/distance specific UDMs I use. It had a couple of nice winners yesterday ($49.00 and $16.20) and as you can see has been consistent throughout the year

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, I RECENTLY REVIEWED YOUR COMMENTS ON
J CAPPER AND HAVE TO AGREE THE PROGRAM IS LIGHT YEARS BETTER
THAN PROGRAMS I'VE PURCHASED IN MULTIPLES OF JEFF'S PRICE.

SINCE I'M HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY WITH THE UMD FEATURES(S)
AND AM BRAIN DEAD ON ACCESS AND EXCEL, CAN JEFF SET UP VARIOUS SCENARIOS OR ARE THE USERS LEFT ON THEIR OWN TO CREATE THIS INFO..

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED..

NY Bred,

Check out the mesage board at www.jcapper.com. I believe that two UDMs come out of the box and have shown to be profitable in the past. The beauty of the program, the way I understand it, is the ability to create your own by choosing the variables and seeing if they might make money. Some examples are on the jcapper board, and there has been some talk there in the past about users sharing their UDMs. (Probably the good ones, not the GREAT ones. :) )

As a former software junkie, this program is definitely on my buy list.

Also read Jeff's handicapping articles. They give you some insight on how he uses the program. There have been some UDM's posted, and if you want to ask a question on the board I'm sure there would be several people willing to give you a hand getting started

NY Bred,

I would be glad to chat with you about Jcapper if you think that would help. This is great software and once you get a starting point, everything will fall in place.

Just send me a private message with your email and we will setup a time workable for both of us.

Look forward to the chat,

Bill

I just downloaded the demo and, aside from a few small setup problems, the program seems to have great potential. One question for those of you already knowledgeable - how would I look at content of the out-of-the box UDM's? Can I do this this in the UDm Wizard (ok, two questions)?

Thanks,

Lou G

By "content", do you mean how the UDM is defined? The easiest way would be to run it in the Data Window... the header specifies all the parameters that have been set.

After you have built a database you can run either UDM through the Data Window (using the UDM button) and the UDM Definition will appear in the header of the Data Window output. Make sure you select +Apply Special Filters first and set the correct surface and distance to match the UDM - The UDM names begin with DS_ and DR_ - DS_ is intended for dirt sprints and DR_ is intended for dirt routes. The first constraint is that the horse have the top JRating in the race. The other constraints are created by the filter codes - All those funny looking characters that may not make a whole lot of sense to most at first. They are actually a series of separate filters based on some research I did into combining the number of lifetime starts with a horse's age. Both UDMs end up eliminating horses that are either under or over raced according to an ideal range that I came up with for each age group.
