You're leaving out the important number Jimmy, ROI. I'm sure yours is a good one, just curious how good.

CJ,

Care to post an ROI for 2004? After 7300+ races bet and a poor December I wound up at 26%.

How do you compute ROI. I have on a spreadsheet total bet, return and a profit number.

Divide money returned by money bet to find R.O.I.

Laddie,
The hit rate is almost meaningless, except for advertising value, as the newspaper guys know so well. There is a threshold hit rate above which it's damn hard to make money, because too many favorites are played. I would love to hit @ 15% & get an average of $17 or $18.

+11% for the year, on bets. Throw in rebates (some eHorse, some BrisBet, some Pinnacle), it goes up to 15.5%. I've been around the 10% number 4 years in a row now.

26% is VERY impressive. Did you hit a few really big races to get so high, or consistent throughout the year?

I only asked Jimmy because I know, like myself, he's a price horse player. I don't get a lot of huge scores, because I play mostly exactas and W or WP bets, though I'll throw in an occasional tri.

CJ,

Thanks for the reply. My year was fairly consistent until the wheels fell off in December. The second worst month was Feb with an ROI of +5%.

I wish I could figure out if there is something seasonal going on because things always seem to fall apart sometime between Dec and Feb. It serves one useful purpose: I have been hard at work on attempts at improving my software.

In terms of past history I have been in the +12% to +27% range for the past seven years. There is a bit of rebate action included in my number due to the "winner's bonus" that Youbet has paid on a few tracks this fall.

The 15.5% is VERY impressive too. Congratulations on the fine year.

Okay take today for example at the Big A. I wagered on 6 races hitting 3 winners and three seconds. I All my plays were Win wagers.
On my spread sheet I have 240 total wagered and 494 retruned for a profit of of 254.

Dividing total returned by total bet I get 205. Does this mean I have a 205 % ROI. What am I doing wrong

I too am always looking at ROI rather than % 1st, 2nd, 3rd & in the money. That said, I vividly remember the day Jimmy posted $90 worth of picks on this site that turned into a $20k day at the track.

Big deal. Any dog has it's day.

That's not an ROI. Heck, most California players have heard about the bettor who back in 1989 hit a $2 Win Pick 9 for $2.1 million after taxes.....and wound up in the Los Angeles Times explaining how he wound up $750,000 in debt after 9 months, including losing his house and family.

Jimmy just reposted the picks that I made reference to. His statement, "How's that for an ROI?," was included in the post with his results. Obviously, that's not his ROI for the year. We on this board were very excited for him.

Regardless of whether Jimmy posts his 2005 ROI or not, does not change the fact that he posts his selections daily for all tracks. He then went to the trouble of posting his results for his selections. If somebody really wants his ROI, then they could go back through all of his top selections and calculate it.

This site is all about sharing and that's all he was trying to do. Appreciate it for what it is.

kingfin66, very nice reply. Your closing thought says it all, and should be absorbed by all.

nmhusker,

There are several different formulas for calculating roi. The one I use calculates roi on overall $2.00 wager. To do this you must know your win % and average $2.00 payoff less $2.00 bet.

As to the formula used to figure your roi based on the figures you provided. Here's what I come up with.

Total Invested: $240
Total Collected: $494
Profit: $254

Divide Profit ($254) by Total Invested ($240) = 105.8% roi

Hope that helps?

Hi Jimmy,

I'm doing great! Thanks for asking. Still doing all the things you mentioned. No more fish stories like the last one. No one would believe the fish story anyway? Ha ha...

Hope all is well. I've been checking out your PK3 Systems. Trying it on my picks to see how I would've done. Interesting system. so far its working pretty good on my picks. However, I haven't hit with the BC/BC/BC. How often does it hit for you?

Perhaps I'll post a few picks with you. Take care.......

Jack

Jack,
So your r.o.i. is $4.23 per $2 bet, correct?
