SMARTY'S NEW LIFE _
After a night in his paddock at Three Chimneys, Smarty Jones was led back to his stall by his groom, Ruben Ramos. Smarty came to the farm in August.

The scent of lust was in the air when Smarty Jones met Sally in the Three Chimneys breeding shed near Midway.

Their mutual attraction was obvious. The gray mare, her tail wrapped in an elastic bandage to keep stray hairs in place, leaned amorously into Smarty Jones. Her hind feet were outfitted with leather boots in case she should kick the male horse. Smarty curled his lips in pleasure as he caught a whiff of pheromones: the mare's natural scent.

This was an important day in Smarty's new life.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner was adapting from champion racehorse to high-priced breeding stallion, learning his new craft under direction from Three Chimneys stallion manager Sandy Hatfield and a team of handlers.

A few days with Sally the "test mare" as his teacher in mid-November, and Smarty would know everything he needed for his new job.

Nearly $40 million rides on his successful transition to this new life.

That figure represented Smarty's total value after Roy and Pat Chapman sold 50 percent of his breeding rights before his retirement in August.
