Google Advertisements are now up and running. If you see something that interests you, don't hesitate to click the advertisment. It puts a couple of shells in my pocket, and if enough of you click on the ads, this place might generate enough money to pay for itself.

I will be expanding the advertising once I switch to the new software, and by expand, I mean more targeted ads from specific vendors who want to write me a check for the exposure.

Any comments?

PS. I am not responsible for the content of the Google Ads. If you see something a bit "cheesy," just remember, it's helping me out in the long run......

Mike,

One thing I might suggest...

If they'll let you, edit the anchor tags for the Google Ads in such a way that when the Ad link is clicked the Ad opens up in a separate window. Right now if one of us clicks an Ad we are redirected away from your site.

Add a target="new" inside the anchor tag.. Something like this should work...

<a href="www.siteWhereAdExists" target="new">
Insert Ad Text Here
</a>

I tried last night (well, early this morning) to accomplish this very thing using a different method, and couldn't get it to work. I will work more on it tonight trying your suggestion.

Here' something else I found on the Google site:

Can I open the ads in a new window?

We understand the importance of maintaining the quality of your site and your site's user experience. However, at this time we do not have an option to open Google ads in a new browser window. Please do not modify the AdSense ad code or alter the result of clicking on an ad on your website, as this is against our program policies.

So does that mean that you don't get credit if we right click and open in a new tab or window?

No, the site will still get credit. For some reason though, Google will not allow this to be coded into the ad itself, making it a one click process.

Here is a thread on the matter....

PA

Is it O.K. to ridicule an add by some of your sponsor(s)? One says:
As incredible as it sounds... Now you can make some $10,000 in as little as 10 days at the races. It's amazing...
for only $19.95.

This is bound to get alot of flak considering most members here are experienced enough to know only a novice would fall for that. Won't advertisers like this cause their own defection from your board, once they get all that negative energy?

Hey Light,

From PA's original post in this thread:

PS. I am not responsible for the content of the Google Ads. If you see something a bit "cheesy," just remember, it's helping me out in the long run......

Cut him a break, eh?

Mike,

Great!, glad to see you are finally going to get some support. You do more than enough just working hard keeping up the quality of this site without having to pay for it too. Hope this works out well for you.

I just clicked on your sponsors a few dozen times hitting the link, then the browser back button and then the sponsors link again.

I sat my Nephew down at the computer... I said. "here.. Click these things here a few hundred times today and I'll bring you a present when I get home from the race track."

Is that legal? Are we being recorded? Testing testing 1 2 3

Is that legal? Are we being recorded? Testing testing 1 2 3 Don't do that. Google will just kick him out of the program. Trying to pump up the clicks artifically is a bad idea -- Google is watching, yes. They won't count them even if you do it a little bit -- many clicks from the same person in the same session don't count (for more than 1 or 2).

Google doesn't allow you to open up in a new window automatically because they want you to look at the page you clicked on, however you can right-click and do it yourself.

If PA notices any extra cheezy ads or ads from "competitors", there is a filter file he can edit so certain advertisers are blocked. Please understand that PA has no other control over the ads displayed, and the advertisers themselves cannot specifically choose which sites their ads will appear on -- it is all based on keywords appearing on the page. If you go look at the Bush-Kerry thread in Off Topic you'll probably see political ads on those pages.

PA can also edit the colors, etc of the ads so they blend in (or stick out) better...

Hey, you know, that is very COOL. I didn't realize that the Google ads customize themselves to the content of the PAGE! I clicked on the Thanksgiving thread, and there were ads for Thanksgiving...clicked on a Bush ad, and there were ads for Election 2004 stuff.....

Firefox ad blocking is fairly effective. Unfortunately, you cannot teach it to ignore "good" ads like PA's and extinguish the obnozious ones found elsewhere. The easiest solution is to view them in IE.

The ad selection system is fun to watch in action.

For example: A thread started with a reference to Gulfstream (the racetrack), and a reply mentioned a billionaire (Stronach).

The ads came up for jet plane sales and leasing.

I can see people making posts containing esoteric words and phrases just to see what ads show up.

Rolex.

Just FYI....

I noticed that the Google ads come up on my PC at home but not on my Mac at work. I don't know if it's a Mac/PC issue or if it has something to do with a firewall or something at the office.

Yeah, I've heard from a few people who don't get them in certain places. I believe it may have to do with javascript settings....
