A freind of mine just installed Norton Internet Security 2005. Has done all the downloads and upgrades needed. Now when he boots up he gets this.

Error loading. C:\Program Files\Wild Tangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll

My questions are: How do I correct this? Or how do I get rid of this? Is this a bad thing? How do I 'load' this?

Otherwise everything seems to be working fine
Thanks

http://www.wildtangent.com is a gaming site.

Here's a cut and paste from Symantic

"Because some programs use software from the Wild Tangent Web site, the Wild Tangent software can appear on your computer from any of many sources. Even if you have never played a game from the Wild Tangent site, some other program may have installed the software to your computer.

More information
Here are some typical programs that may install Wild Tangent Software to your computer:

Wild Tangent games: When you play a game at the Wild Tangent Software gaming site, http://www.wildtangent.com, the site requires you to download the game program to play the game. The game may be downloaded to your computer regardless of whether you play the game on the Web site or directly on your computer.
Winamp: Wild Tangent software is installed as part of the customized parts (plugins) of Winamp.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other programs: Some ISPs and other programs may install portions of the Wild Tangent software. ISPs include companies such as Verizon or BellSouth that provide your computer access to the Internet."

Either uninstall or reinstall the software that wants to talk to WildTangent.com or look at authorizing the program in Norton > Firewall > Configure > Programs

Wild Tangent is generally considered to be Spyware. If you are regularly seeing popup ads in Internet Explorer, you most certainly have some spy/adware on your system. I would suggest downloading a free spy/adware removal program from download.com. Spybot Search & Destroy and Spysweeper are 2 programs that work well.

He already has Spybot S & D installed, and ran it, still has same problem. What I can't figure, it says, Error loading ? You'de figure you wouldn't want it to load?

"Spyware Blaster" does a great job of keeping the spyware off in the first place.

McAfee found two infected files on my computer, but cannot celan, delete, or quarentine either one. I cannot even find the files anywhere in the Windows/System32 directory where it says they are.

They are msvy.exe and msvy.exe:ytsep

Anyone run across theses bad boys before?

tom, new ones on me. Make sure you don't have hidden files set to be "Hidden"

open "my computer" "tools" "folder options" "View" and scroll down and check

"show hidden files and folder"

then uncheck the next two under it. Then go looking for those files. You can always rename them and see if there is any effect.

Tom, are you sure this is not what you found? Maybe a typo in your original post?

see below:

msvxd - msvxd.exe - Process Information
Process File: msvxd or msvxd.exe
Process Name: W32/Datom-A

Description:
Msvxd.exe is the executable process of the W32/Datom-A virus. It uses Windows network shares to spread. The worm consists of two other files: msvxd16.dll msvxd32.dll All shoould be disabled, see further info.

If this is what you have..........check here for info

Ralph,
No typo-msvy.exe and I cannot find it anywhere.
Last night, I disconnected fro the net and ran AdAware multiple times - off line. Every time I cleaned everything out and re-ran, there were more Critical files! And I keep getting hijack attempts.
I am going to go to securitytango.com and follow it line by line and get all the software they recommend, then replace IE and Outlook Express for good. Damn MS programs are just crap.

I guess my quesiton is, I pay for an Anti-Virus program and have tons of viruses on my computer? How did they get there and why did my AV software not detect them and do something?

The hard truth Tom............... you clicked something you shouldn't have. Either an email message or a website etc. Virus's enter only when you do something you shouldn't. You need to become more aware and defensive. The second part of your question is a very important part of the solution. What anti virus do you use? Does it monitor email actively all the time?

You may also be getting the virus infection from certain websites. You may need to also turn up your security settings. Also, any program you download that is free and not from a trusted site (this means one you know well, like the Equisim Demo or some other site) If you download a program from "download.com" or some similar site and it is "free to try" or "free" it is loaded with Ad Ware or sometimes something else. I downloaded an app for a client yesterday from "download.com" when installed it added an active x control that also surreptitiously downloaded stuf that was virus infected.

The truth is, if you aren't paying for the software.........don't use it. The programmers no longer have any scruples left and they don't care how bad your machine gets screwed.

Norton Anti-virus.......not "Norton Internet Security" either. Just plain Anti-virus is my recommendation (and update it every couple of days via live update or manual download) it will monitor your email and stop some websites from hammering you. We can't stop them all.......but when in doubt.........don't install........anything! Unless you know it is safe.

Oh yeah.........any porn site on the Net is attacking your machine with dialers or spam related spyware. Whether you pay or not. So if you are so inclined...........you have to be extra careful.........

I use McAffee on one machine and Norton AV on the other. I do not download anything but racing files that I am paying for, generally, or free charts from EBase. I prefer hard-copy porn from the drug store (<G> NOT!) and I delete any email I am not expecting or do not immediately recognize the sender. PRoble is, if I am reading an article on the net, or click on a link to go to one, sometimes I am barraged by 50-100 porn sites all at onces, even though I did not go to any of them. The local all-in computer show told me that some sites are hijacked by other sites and when I go there, it sucs to be me! I am definately going to dump MS email and browsers. Wehn I use Netsacape, I have ZERO problems with hijack attempts or pop up crap. Just trying to figure out a fast way to transfer my favorites over to bookmarks.
Thanks for the help.

'Just Norton AntiVirus and not Norton Internet Security' I thought NIS has more security than NAV? This is what my freind just put in his computer. What's the difference between the two?

I'll try what you recommended in earlier post next time I'm over his house.

Any software firewall lacks the security of a 'router based solution" A router is much better and when it screws up you reset it. It works again in about a minute or less. or you just take it out of the loop. But when a software solution screws up (zone alarm, norton and others) it is strewn throughout your system and can cause major problems. Norton even includes on the install disks (hidden in a folder) a program that manually uninstalls and cleans the firewall product off of your computer if it gets messed up bad enough that it won't uninstall. And sometimes that little hidden program won't work either. They have the same thing for Anti virus. I have had clients who have worked on the phone with Norton support for 3 hours and still have to format their machine..............fyi

JR, very good advice. Software firewalls can be nothing but headaches. Hardware firewall via a router is definitely the way to go.

Just did what you recommended to do on my freinds computer. I can't beleive I followed your directions right because it did work. Shut off computer twice since and hasn't come up on a boot, thanks again.

Now I'm going to go back and try to fix this Back Web problem, same thing, comes up every time he starts the computer. He also has web sites ( a ton ) thrown into his favorites section. I think I solved that one also. You wrote me about the BackWeb thing under handicapping software, I'll search that now and see if I can solve that. Thanks for all your help guys, I'm learning the crappy stuff day to day.

Well, fooled around with his computer most of night. Fixed the Back Web problem. Also conquered Cool Web Search syndrome, its around no more. All the crap in his favorites doesn't come back. DOS Expliot is gone also and everything fires up great. Now he feels like he has his computer back. So being the I T (:o ) man that I am, he splurged for beers and pool all night. Doing this crap on his computer teaches me.
