What do you say we shut down off topic for two weeks to give everyone a breather? . It might be good to remember why we are all here. Here's a poll.

Let's see... 6 horse fields at Hollywood or dissecting Russia and Iran planning nukes...

How about we shut down the Handicapping section for 2 weeks?

Your a Funny Guy. You want to debate everything and You need the last word on everything and I can't recall the last time I saw you offer or add any substanial input on horse racing. I come for that, Horse racing.

You play Horses? There are 100's if not 1000's of Message boards on Politics and social issues.

I put up a Poll. I assume you voted? Great. Then leave me be. I don't wish to get engaged with you while you cherry pick numbers to susbstantiate your polluting the board everyday with your issues. Because all forums vs Off topic are heavily weighted in t-breds favor. But why am I pointing that out to you? because you knew that...and conviently ignored it to make an arguement. I'm up to my eyeballs with arguements on issues on this board.

btw... I got the idea for the Poll from our trusty leader.. who he himself was/is considering shutting down Off Topic. BUT.. I figured I'd play the heavy and breach the subject. But I'm not going to roll around in the MUD about it.

There are plenty of Horse racing boards as well.

Not sure if you are referring to me, but if so, yes, I play horses. Yes I have a website about horses. Yes we offer both harness and t-bred races...

Your post was a tad bit confusing..

I voted two weeks.

This place is fun and frequently informative... but too often, not everyone seems to be getting recreational value from virtual debate and jousting.

And I'm running out of Ohio material. :)

I think it's time to move on and work on 2008.. The beauty of horseracing is that if you lose a race, you can redeem yourself in 22 minutes.. In an election, you have to wait 4 years..

Suff asks:

What do you say we shut down off topic for two weeks to give everyone a breather? . It might be good to remember why we are all here. Here's a poll.

Well...fer starters, for those of us who are here primarily or only to discuss horsey-related stuff, there are forums established for this very specific purpose. Have you considered checking those places out?

Next logical question: Have you ever read up on the reason why PA established this particular forum? Were you able to comprehend what you read?

Then I just gotta ask, Suff: If you're so unhappy over here, why just don't you hightail to over there? And if what's over there isn't up to your "high standards" or "great expectations", then have you considered surfin' the 'net for a more suitable hangout? Is someone sitting at your keyboard with you and holding a gun to your head? Or are you being coerced in some other way to either lurk or post on this forum, or even to frequent this site?

And before I take my leave of this idiotic thread, whatever happened to a little faculty we all possess called volition? Is yours shot or what? I thought you were a big Pro-Choice advocate? But now simply because you're (with perhaps a few others -- perhaps) an unhappy camper on this forum, you want to effectively annul everyone else's free choice to either continue to participate in this forum or to not participatye, as we see fit. You want to remove our choice by trying to force PA to close the board down for a while? What a self-centered, utterly and unabashedly and shamelessly selfish, self-indulgent, pathetic excuse for a human being you are! You so typify the moral impoverishment of so many Liberals. A typical Hypocrite! You're all for the "Right to Choose", providing the choices others make are in line with your own. But if those, then let everyon else's "Right to Choose" be forevermore consigned to hell!

Have you considred freely choosing to do many of us a favor: How 'bout shutting down yourself from this forum for a week, two weeks, five weeks...indefinitely?

Where would we post about the Fl animal rights group election suit about GP?
I would rather shut down MSNBC for months of calling the election a "horserace". Gives horses a bad name.

I would hazard a guess that Suff and many others including
myself feel revulsion when they read much of what fills this side
of the board recently. Where there was once banter and
disagreement, there is open rancour and hositility. Certainly
we can ignore this part of the board, however, thats not the
point. To many this is an escape from the bull s''t out there. This
has now become 'out there', and thats the pity.

I'm having a little trouble trying to figure out how those who want to AVOID off-topic CAN'T avoid off-topic!!!???

It's quite simple. Posts that are clearly marked off-topic, you shouldn't click on!

Like it or not, this place has become a community of sorts. You have people you like, and people you don't like, just like it is in "real life"

People like to talk about other stuff besides horse racing. At one point, early on (maybe 4+ years ago), there was no off-topic section. People used to post notes that were off-topic, IN the horse racing sections. People then asked for an off-topic section, and the problems were solved.....

Now there are problems again....however...

I don't really see it as a problem as it pertains to the HORSE RACING section. What I do see as a potential problem is the content in OFF-TOPIC itself, which is why I considered shutting it down for a while after the election.

I had considered shutting it down BEFORE the election, but then I would have opened myself up for major criticism, in that I would have been accused of trying to silence the anti-Bush crowd (who claims to be a beaten down minority on off-topic, but I know better)

In any event, that's where things stand. Off-topic isn't going anywhere, however, a few choice posters within off-topic might if they can't reform their ways.

If it weren't for the OT section this site wouldn't get near as many hits. If PA were to someday try to profit from the site, he'll need all the hits he can get. OT gives him that.

The old adage of "if you don't like the program, turn the channel" applies, at least to me. If OT doesn't interest you, why waste your time here?

Personally, handicapping topics bore me, at least 95+% of the topics posted up here do. To me there's nuthin new under the handicapping sun, it's all fundamentals (but that doesn't stop those that peddle their picks and products tho ;) ).

The OT *does* interest me b/c handicappers are NEVER at a loss for an opinion on anything they believe in. It's just in our blood. I see some dudes in here go at each others throats on-line, but I guarantee you if they were to meet face to face they'd be laffin over a few beers before too long.

OT I suppose ain't for everyone, but I'd be sad to see it end or put on hold....For the years I didn't post here, I still checked in almost every day I could and read opinions. This is a good community to draw knowledge from.

Au contraire, sir. It's precisely the point. As Elk just pointed out, if you don't like what's on the channel, change it!

To many this is an escape from the bull s''t out there. This

The real pity is that you don't get it. There are still plenty of other "out theres" to which to "escape". After all -- this is cyberspace.

This may be the most ignorant poll ever, on this board. Suff, did you get upset when your gross pics were taken down last week ? I voted for you to go back to your porno movies. How do you find time to read these posts with all those boobs etc. holding your attention ? I surf the horsey side of this board every day and find debates, arguments, and name calling just like here. Based on your poll perhaps we should shut the whole board down for a couple of weeks. ;) That way we could all get our lawn work done or whatever it is our spouses are nagging us about while we while away the hours here. :D

Actually, I don't think LJB brought the thread back. I saw it active again earlier this afternoon, and LJB hadn't posted, and I couldn't tell that anyone had posted and deleted it, or merely voted in the poll, to bring it back. After 2-3 minutes of confusion, I just shrugged and went onto another topic.

PA,
If one can automatically ignore other posters why not selected forums also? (Similarly, how does one access “Today’s Posts” rather than just “New Posts” when logged on?)

Suff,
I hate the appearance of agreeing with the hypocritical boxcar’s sudden comfort with the liberal “free-speech” position. As hard as your “pictures” were to take, I would never ask that you be prevented from posting the truth as you know it. Your accounts of some of what’s involved in dealing with the aftermath of Katrina are extremely valuable, but I wouldn’t have benefited from them without the off-topic forum being available when I had time to visit.

I agree that off-topic is an abomination – an addictive asylum for annoying, aggravating, agitating, absolute assholes, but we who come and go there do so of our own volition, and emerge physically intact and sometimes even enlightened.

Admittedly, I have found my own tolerance and behavior in the horseracing forums to have been adversely affected by my visits to off-topic, and have noticed a similar effect on others. But even if PA banned all name-calling and bullying in every forum, he still couldn’t confine hostility to selected issues.

Good luck down there, if that’s where you still are.

Suff,

I didn't vote in this because I was unsatisfied with any of the options. (much like many of our federal elections).

Anyway, I already take 2 week or more vacations from Off Topic. When i come back I do so to be enlightened by some good posts from someone like Hcap or LJB. I try less to be bothered by the hard headed partisanship of a Lefty or SQ764 who will beleive anything GW says.

We don't need Off Topic shut down. Shut it down yourself if you want by walking away from it. I have at times. Two weeks away from it and you'll come back to the same thing. I've yet to see many people here change their minds about anything, but only become more entrenched. if one went back and looked at posts 5 years ago, they'd be filled with almost as much rancor as today.

When the issues become too emotional here, it is best to walk away on your own for awhile, and go out and take a walk or talk to some non-Republicans for awhile. Can't help but make you feel more like a human being.

Suff,

Long time no hear from. I didn't find my exact preference among the voting options. I DID like the part about porn, though. Heheh. :jump:

Anyone suggesting the love-it-or-leave-it criterion is WAY off base. Whining is our God-given right as horseplayers, right? To suggest that someone find another board is just brutal. No board out there can compete with PA. Even DMTC, which had a cool low-tech feature which allowed rapid-fire reading of posts, changed its format to the generic one found on several other boards. Maybe it's just me, but I also find the other boards very clubby. I know we hassle newbies when we suspect blatant whoring/pimping, but I'm talking about something more general. I can't really put my finger on it, but we should take this opportunity to look at what we have here. Heck, maybe we should have a review of all horsey sites. I doubt it would accomplish much, but everybody should do his own private poll. I haven't found anything close. Suff, your poll is a positive attempt to improve things. I think it's not really necessary, but be like the good horseplayer --- damn the naysayers, full speed ahead.

Based on my observations of the very few posters that I know personally, I believe the acrimonious character assassination going on here has a purgative effect. I recognize that bystanders want to read, but get sick when the vitriol piles too high. The step-in-and-lock-down tool that PA uses sparingly seems to work just fine.

I have a different take on what the bystanders want, don't want and why they are easily purged of talking horses, politics or participating for that matter.

The predominant posters here, with the exception of Tom :D are well educated and they just can't help themselves from letting you know it, sorry to say some aren't intelligent enough to understand that the majority of horse players come from a wide range of social existence and education. A very small percentage are Yale or Harvard graduates, ESP those that are just lurking. They are smart enough to know they will be belittled or embarrassed so why jump in. Some members get their rocks off doing just that, maybe it's because they are still paying for that education or it's just plain ego driven.

If there's anyone here that has battled that ignorance it's been me from day one signing onto a forum, hell I was just learning how to type, English and grammar were my worst subjects, dyslexic in a way. I can deal with whom I am so I pushed forward, primarily because I believe I know horse racing as well as anyone here or elsewhere. So, it's my opinion if you want more people to chime in, stick it out, come down off your high horses and communicate in an intelligent way. Otherwise you all will be swimming in one pond and the not wanted signs will be all over. That's what I think, take it or leave it.

Good luck,

T.D.

I might add, being literate by no means guarantees intelligence. In many cases it's just a smoke screen to cover what they lack, ESP when it comes to common sense and it can border on unrealistic thinking. The sad part is they can con their way into positions where they don't belong to the detriment of those that are under them. You Tom on the other hand have a better grasp of reality than those I'm reffering to. They have polluted every aspect of our society and we can rightfully say, they are on the extreme left. I was with you all the way in post #40, but you lost me in #42. In my experience, there is no shortage of society polluters on the extreme right. I agree that academic study is no substitute for common sense and/or life experience, but real education of any kind requires a continued willingness to learn, to repeatedly evaluate new information, and to accept change. How often do extremists of any orientation or persuasion exhibit those characteristics?

Do people realize that this thread was started in late 2004, and that the first 31 posts were all from back then? It was from after our (heavy / disturbing /trying)times up to, and through the 2004 Election.

Not that it isn't a relevant question. I know I've tried to stay out of the Off Topic discussions lately for need of a break - yet here I am, just not arguing, at least not this time. ;)

Why don't you clarify a little. Define a "society polluter."

While you are at it, define "extreme right"

I get the feeling that you believe that anyone on the extreme left or right would have to be uneducated based on your statement above? Why don't you elaborate a little.

I get the feeling that you believe that anyone on the extreme left or right would have to be uneducated based on your statement above? Why don't you elaborate a little.JR,
Why didn’t you express similar interest in -- and request clarification of -- the post I was responding to which stated, “They [the literate?] have polluted every aspect of our society and we can rightfully say, they are on the extreme left.”? Do you disagree with my perception of the characteristics of well-educated individuals whether the products of formal instruction or self-taught?

Do you define yourself as a member of the EXTREME right?

TD,
I was with you all the way in post #40, but you lost me in #42.

Let me see if I have this right: You're saying that when someone is unwilling to "accept change", for what he thinks is good reason, that makes the person an "extemist? If so, to make such a broad, generalized statement would imply that the underlying assumption is that [all] change is good or for the better, would it not? If so, then do you think all change is good and positive?

to be quite honest, I paid more attention to yours and while running thru the board I responded to it, kind of hit and run. I thought yours was interesting phrasing. If you don't want to discuss what you wrote, that's fine. But I was going to go down the road that Boxcar has already posted about. I thought it would be interesting discussion.

Oh yes, I describe myself as the extreme right........ because everybody else does......... actually since I don't have a real definition of the extreme right........I am not too sure. I don't worship any religion so I can't fall in that category. Why don't you tell me your definition............

Boxcar,
I didn’t and wouldn’t say all change is good and positive. It would not always be accurate to say that one who is unwilling to accept change is an extremist, but it would be fair to say that one who ignores change or does not make the effort to understand it is not as well-educated as one could be. Education is itself a process of change, generally, in awareness, knowledge, and understanding.

I’m glad you clarifed your response. I wasn’t sure whether I was being asked to define myself or to defend myself.

For purposes of discussion, I associate the “extreme” in “extreme right” or “extreme left” with intolerance, i.e., refusal to entertain and/or accept conflicting or opposing viewpoints, and inability to compromise. If, in your decision not to worship any religion, you do not object to -- or interfere with -- anyone else worshipping the religion of their choice, I don’t think you would qualify as an extremist.

btw... I got the idea for the Poll from our trusty leader.. who he himself was/is considering shutting down Off Topic. BUT.. I figured I'd play the heavy and breach the subject. But I'm not going to roll around in the MUD about it.

There are plenty of Horse racing boards as well.

I have a different take on what the bystanders want, don't want and why they are easily purged of talking horses, politics or participating for that matter.

...
Good luck,

I'm a lurker and I pretty much stay out of the offtopic area. I do participate in another forum on a baseball site and I talk about that stuff there . If I did the same here, I'd be typing all day long.

I just happened to find this thread because I've been reading suff (there's some others here, who I'm more apt to read, like tom, cj, andicap, and a few others). Anyone with that avatar is fine in my book!

Tell me I'm not losing it - I SWEAR Ralph's avatar droped his ball and walked outside the photo to pick it up, then went back inside! I SWEAR I saw him do it, but he won't do it anymore...over a half an hour - he won't move!
Has anyone else seen him move????

He may stop moving after a certain amount of time. To see him move again, reload the page....;)

That avatar was better........but size limits on the board made me cut it way down. The original juggles the balls for about 20 seconds and then drops the ball and goes to get it.

as mr stick is walking out of his phone booth to pick up the ball, he already has a second ball in his hand. you gotta be quick to catch it but there it is. so now you got some guy named mr stick that lives in a phone booth and cant juggle two balls together. whats it all mean ralph? whats it all mean?

freeneasy

when stick man comes out of his booth, before he comes out of his booth he's got a regular body. once he steps out of his box he turns to sticks. i thought, what the hell is tom talking about " what does he do with his skin when he comes out of the box" thats when i went back and took yet another look, then i saw it. the guys a regular guy when he's in the box then when he steps out to pick up his ball wham-o he turns into mr sticks. whew, that was a close one, i thought i was going to have to quit drinking too!
ok, we got some guy doing a juggeling act inside a box for about 20 seconds, drops one of his balls, ball rolls outside, the guy steps out to pick it up, his skin disaappears, picks up the ball, steps back into the box and his skin returns. ok ralph, whatever that warpped mind of yours is doing for pleasure , i give
