Any guesses on which track will be the first to allow fans back in attendance?

To me it would logically be in a state which has fast-tracked their re-opening, so my guess is Gulfstream Park.

My hope is for a snowball effect, in that once someone is the first to make the decision, others will soon thereafter join them. Except for the very few big races, there is no reason to believe that fans who attend live racing can not exercise "good" judgement regarding social interactions with other fans.

When tracks finally do reopen to fan attendance, I hope that masks are optional rather than a mandatory pre-condition for entry.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for this to happen.

There is no going back to the old normal for the time being.

I wouldn't be surprised if fans are allowed back at Remington when they open in August, but they probably won't be first.

From the way the announcer spoke on closing day at Will Rogers, fans were on track. He warned people after the last race to cash all tickets before leaving because the track would not be open any time soon.

The charts for the last day there show attendance of 0 but an on-track handle for the day of about $9500. Sounds like the announcer was talking to the horse people who were there.

There were no fans present, any on track betting came from those working.

My impression is that FL and TX are at the forefront in reopening businesses, not just racing. CA and NY are at the tail end.

I was there in March of this year. Saturday night after the Tampa Bay Derby. I used to go to Wonderland Park greyhound, I enjoyed Derby Lane. Its pretty. Mostly Poker players it seemed.

Nice. I’ve played there a bunch. The clubhouse might qualify as the one the best OTB’s on the east coast.

Clean, Cloth tablecloths, waiters in tuxedo shirts, real silverware..never crowded, food good.

We have a greyhound rescue around here someplace - you see lots of them walking down by the lake. Last year, I was parked there, reading the Form and noticed one walk by, then another, then another, then, I put down the paper and looked around. There must have been 20-25 of them there! Apparently, they have "get togethers" among the owners.

Beautiful dogs - all them well behaved!

Does wearing a mask really bother you that much? As for the first track to open what if any tracks are on tribal land?

I will wear one if I have to, but in general it steams up my glasses and I don't particularly like breathing thru it. Maybe one of the better-grade masks would help.

Interesting you should mention tracks on tribal land. I had heard about this place before, but early today I was doing some more research on Crow Agency.

An except from an article:

The 102nd Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 14-17, 2020 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

****

I know the races are "unsanctioned", but I do not know if there is any kind of wagering. Me thinks there probably is, especially given the typical Fair crowd sizes.

This place has been on my visit list radar for a number of years. Since this may be my only chance to get in a new track visit this summer, I've sent them an e-mail to see if I can learn what their current situation is. Given that they have done this for more than 100 years, normally have big attendance, and are on a 2.2 million acre Indian Reservation, they may be sovereign enough to do their own thing without Government intervention.

Hi Jeff,

They may now be the favorite.

The OK Horseracing Commission supposedly met today but I don't know of any of the decisions made yet. Accordingly to the Agenda, FMT want to modify their racing schedule to open 06/05. What I find interesting is the Fair Meadows Simulcast and Grill (on the Expo site) supposedly opened 05/08. I know that live attendance is significantly higher than what a simulcast crowd would be, but if true, FMT may be the first US horseracing track to welcome fans back.

Edit: Also found out the Commission meet was to be held at the Fair Meadows Simulcast and Grill.

Word has it that an announcement is going to be made on 06/01, and that fans will be allowed in when Fair Meadows Tulsa begins their meet on 06/05. . :jump:

In a separate note from a Bloodhorse article, Gulfstream Park is now going to allow owners to attend and watch from a specific area.

Fair Meadows Tulsa begins their race meet tonight at 6 p.m. and fans will be allowed in attendance! A graphic "recommends" the following:

--- Wash hands with soap
--- Social distancing
--- Avoid handshakes
--- Stay home if sick
--- Wear a mask
--- Use Sanitizer

I did not see any specific mention of limiting attendance to a percentage of full capacity.

(BTW CJ was correct in that Remington Park started to allow general fans in for their QH meet on 05/21, which means they are planning on allowing general fan attendance when their thoroughbred meet begins in Aug/2020.).

Now it remains who of the "major league" tracks who be the first to re-open to general racing fans. I can't see NY , CA, or KY, so it will probably be Gulfstream Park in FL.

I knew this, but what is really nice to see is the number of races each day, and even more so, the field sizes.

Both tonight and tomorrow have 12 races each night. Pre-scratches, one race has 5 entries, 6 have 6 entries, and 13 have a full field of 10! Definitely not typical for FMT as in the past. I did not look at the specific entries yet, but I would guess that more horses are available from nearby Nebraska with Horseman's Park Omaha and Columbus not running their meets. I would suspect it is too far to ship from Iowa with PrM not running yet, but those horses would probably go over to Cby.

It will be interesting to see if the situation continues in the future weeks, or is just from the excitement of opening nights for Thoroughbreds.

I'll be watching FMT on RTN tonight and tomorrow and playing some races. :)

Good news for racing fans, so thanks for sharing.

Just so live poker room players don't get excited, let it be known that Canterbury Park does NOT have a poker room where players compete against each other. What they do have is a table game called Ultimate Texas Holdem. Players play only against the dealer, and as expected, the rules are structured in such a way to guarantee the house a "small", winning edge.

As of this moment, I am aware that some Texas Holdem card rooms are open in FL, OK, CA, and NV, according to the BRAVO system.

Also as an aside, Cby did have a few $5 minimum blackjack tables when I visited there not too long ago.

Canterbury does have traditional poker too. So live poker players CAN get excited. For the record you need a reservation to attend live racing, Simulcasting, or poker, so Canterbury can control the crowd size to comply with current regulations.

Sorry for the misinformation and thanks for the correction! I am a bit surprised though that they still offer Ultimate Texas holdem as a table game, as the places where I saw that before did it because they were not allowed to have a poker room. I also went back to specifically look for Cby on the BRAVO system, and sure enough, they are there.

Tentative track collecting activities have me going to MN in 2021 or 2022, so it is good to know that in addition to playing Texas Holdem at Running Aces, I can now do it at Canterbury as well. :jump:
