So who's your pick?

Going for an upset with WHIRLAWAY if he is First Time Lasix.

If no raceday meds, I'll take SECRETARIAT-WHIRLAWAY straight exacta.

This is gonna be tough. I don't know why I have Secretariat to win.

They drew posts and set an odds line.
BRIS has put together PPs - I think you can get them at HRRN.

Cool idea - live coverage next Saturday on NBC and on HRRN.

Citation the value in the morning line.

I thought that too - then I looked some stuff up:

yes, on 2nd thought I would have to agree that Secretariat would beat Citation and probably pretty easily
I looked up Citation's time in the Derby and it was 2:05.40
Secretariat's time was 1:59.40

that's a full 6 seconds difference and something that cannot be accounted for by a track variant

then I learned that Citation ran on a sloppy track in the Derby so I looked for more info

Preakness:

Secretariat...............................1:53

Citation...................................202.40

not much chance for Citation unless Secretariat has a bad off day like he once did with an abscessed tooth

if you even trust the timing mechanisms of the 40's.

Secretariet lost 5 times, he wasnt unbeatable. I am sure Citation was better than those 5 other horses. 12/1 versus 1/2.

While I like Secretariat . Don’t overlook Count Fleet or Seattle Slew.

At the bottom are Count Fleet and Gallant Fox.

Count Fleet worked 6f in 1:08+ as a 2yo and set a world record when he won the Champagne which wasn't topped until a quarter of a century later. Even after that, only such greats as Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid, Easy Goer, and Sea Hero have won the Champagne anywhere near his final time (1:34 4/5). Monster horse, set a stakes record in the Belmont too, which he won by 25 lengths.

Gallant Fox would have been the only Quintuple Crown winner if he wasn't the victim of the second most famous upset in racing in the Travers (Jim Dandy beat him). Coincidentally, he got caught in a speed duel just like American Pharoah by the runner-up in the Belmont, setting up for an late-running upstart. Gallant Fox also took the Lawrence Realization in NY which was created as an American answer to England's Triple Crown race, the St. Leger. He won that in record time. Gallant Fox also came back to beat older horses in both the Saratoga Cup and Jockey Club Gold Cup for good measure. He also sired another Triple Crown winner, Omaha, in his first crop as a stallion, which numbered just 18 foals.

Omaha, himself another longshot on the board, had only one real hiccup during his 3yo campaign when browbeat by the great Discovery in the Brooklyn (a race Discovery won 3 consecutive times) setting a world record in the process. Omaha buried fellow 3yos the rest of the year. He was sent to England as a 4yo and was just beat in the 20 furlong Ascot Gold Cup, one of the most important races in Europe.

In reality, trips and jockeys would play a substantial role. I think if Secretariat got a clean tracking trip he would win it. He wouldn't get away with some of the moves he made in real life (last to first on the first turn, that sort of thing) against this kind. Wonder if that will be factored in? Similarly, it's hard to see some of the brilliantly fast horses like a Count Fleet or Seattle Slew not hooking up and wearing each other down.

Can we let Spectacular Bid into this field so he can prove to everyone where he stands among the all time greats?
He would be a win candidate

That said, the ML maker needs a rethink. He's got Spectacular Bid--who, as someone else implied, was an all-time great--at 20-1 and California Chrome at 10-1.

I think that makes it a better morning line. Recency bias and the younger crowd who make up the audience of this network mean that the betting would be likely to favor Chrome. Morning line maker is supposed to be predicting the wagering odds, not the probability of winning. (A task that many ML makers are displaying little skill for.)

This for CJ - It's been a long time since I was in Oklahoma but I don't remember there being any hills out there. Maybe you could roll the marbles down one of those roadside tornado ditches they have out there.

Your right. It’s not the same virtual race as Churchill. The race coordinated by Churchill includes the 13 past Triple Crown winners. The race coordinated by Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN) includes 20 Kentucky Derby winners. Both should be interesting, but...

"Secretariat will face a much larger (and better?) field in HRRN’s Fantasy Derby this Saturday from 5-6pm EST. Sirius 219, XM 201 and streamed on their website (horseracingradio.net (http://disq.us/url?url=http%3A%2F%2Fhorseracingradio.net%3ADjOxHa fLGCcnrhDh159z-q6kfUo&cuid=999209)).

20 of the greatest KY Derby winners of all time set to square off, and Larry Colmus announcing the race. Should be tremendous!"

For those of you who would like to have the past performances of the field of 13, go to the TRIPLE CROWN page and look for the recent post by me. There I posted the links to the Lifetime past performances of each runner, except American Pharoah and Justify since I cannot find them on there (get's redirected to different page). Enjoy!

Plenty hilly enough for a marble race. I'd probably look elsewhere for skiing.

In the HRRN lineup:

California Chrome - Best Dirt Speed is fastest among today's starters (tie)

Sunday Silence - Best Dirt Speed is fastest among today's starters (tie)

Keep in mind that only 8 of the 20 have any BRISNET speed ratings to compare; both he and Sunday Silence got their tops as older horses. Horses like Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Spectacular Bid have no ratings. Northern Dancer hasn't raced over a route of ground according to their PPs. I'll take the 20-1 on Sunday Silence over the 10-1 on CC.

On the positive side, California Chrome drew Bill Shoemaker as a rider; horse needs a patient, well-timed ride to contend. Or any other warm body aside from Espinoza...
