This is absolutely asinine, that every turf track is pushing 10 to 18 feet off the rail, while the turf and weather are perfect.

It's nothing but a bullshit bullring

They always claimed it was to save the surface for the big races, then a big turf day comes and were sitting at 16 ft off the rail.

Just let the speed horse get a 2 second start, then let everyone else go, would be no worse than how it is right now.

I can remember in past yearish, SA and Del mar with perfect weather being 18_ feet out, day after day after day. Speed goes fast and holds on by length or 2, because they are slingshotting off the turn.

Altering the rail distance is an important aspect to keeping turf horses on track. That rail makes all the difference in whether a speed horse or a closer wins, and tracks need to give both types of horses an opportunity to win during the meet......or they'll go elsewhere. Some tracks like AP will even publish their stats based on rail distance like AP, who over the entire meet will use the entirety of its wide turf course. If you know how to play the rail distance, there's a lot of money to be made
