Santa Anita carryover reaches $478,072
By STEVE ANDERSEN
ARCADIA, Calif. - Longshots wins by Our Mango and Cozy Guy on Saturday has created a carryover of $478,072 for Sunday's pick six at Santa Anita.
The pick six covers the fourth through nine races on Sunday's nine-race program. It will be worthwhile to check the weather conditions in Southern California on Sunday. There was a threat of rain on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
There are few changes in the pick six.
The fourth race is run over seven furlongs for 3-year-old claimers. Cahill Mango, who drew the rail, is the 7-5 favorite on the morning-line.
The fifth race is run over six furlongs for 2-year-old maiden claimers. There are 13 entrants, led by My Boy Joey, the 9-5 morning line favorite. The only other horses at 10-1 or less on the morning line are Proud Ringer (5-1) and Uptownkindofguy and Classy Lover (both 6-1).
The sixth race is scheduled for about 6 1-2 furlongs on the hillside turf course. Rain could force this race to the main track. Trevite is 3-1 on the morning-line in an open race.
The seventh race is run over seven furlongs for $14,000 to $16,000 claimers. Zoolu Night (3-1), West War (4-1), and Spend Spend Spend (9-2) are the top contenders.
The eighth race is the $150,000 Oak Tree Derby over 1 1-8 miles on turf. Greek Sun, second in the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park in August, but unplaced in the Man o War Stakes at Belmont Park last month, is 5-2 on the morning line. Trained by Bobby Frankel, Grek Sun most beat top contenders Borrego, Imperialism, Semi Lost and Terroplane.
The final race is run over 5 1-2 furlongs for 2-year-old maiden claimers. Irish Lucky is scratched, leaving 12 entrants. Belbart is 5-2 on the morning-line.

Turns out that the carryover should've been $555,240 into the 17th.

Oak Tree Racing Association (OCTA) decided that even though they failed to get their "guaranteed" million (handle was $861,020) which meant they had to ante up the difference ($138,980) that once the 5-winner consolations were paid from Saturday's "guaranteed" pool that they had no obligation to honor the guarantee for carryover-pool purposes. So they manipulated the carryover total by $77,168 and put that amount back into their bank account.

According to OTRA-exec Sherwood Chillingworth, they did the "fair and ethical thing" because they "thought about it and talked to everybody that was knowledgeable...".

For those of us who are not "knowledgeable", but who happened to hit the P6 on the 17th; and, who assumed that a guaranteed total is just that; and, that the distribution of a P6 pool is subject to the same rules regardless how the pool reached the guaranteed amount: We got shortchanged about $220 each.

But, it was "fair and ethical" mind you.
