A man who until last week was one of Sen. John McCain's top aides is endorsing John Kerry for president, asserting that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have "waged an unprecedentedly cynical and divisive campaign."

Led by Kerry, Democrats now can seize the opportunity to reach out to disaffected moderate Republicans and independents to build "a new political coalition of national unity," Marshall Wittmann writes in the upcoming edition of Blueprint Magazine, published by the Democratic Leadership Council.

"I am an independent McCainiac who hopes to revive the Bull Moose tradition of Theodore Roosevelt, and I support the Kerry-Edwards agenda," Wittmann writes.

"This unreconstructed Bull Moose will run with the donkey in November."

Wittmann had been McCain's director of communications for the past two years. He left Wednesday to become a senior fellow at the DLC, a centrist or right-of-center Democratic group.

From the official current Bull Moose Party:Why are you called the "Bull Moose" Republicans? [ back to top ]

In 1912, the "Bull Moose" Party was formed during a fight for the Republican Presidential nomination between President William Howard Taft and former President Roosevelt. The Bull Moose, or the "Progressive Party" of 1912 was a group led by Roosevelt who felt the GOP had strayed from its core principles. When Theodore Roosevelt lost the election, the Bull Moose began to whither. The Progressive Party officially died five years later, in 1917.

Like the original Bull Moose, Theodore Roosevelt, we work to break the influence special interests have over our political system, promote innovative policy positions, and better connect voters with our elected officials.

Are today's Bull Moose Republicans a "third party," like the Bull Moose Party of 1912? [ back to top ]

No. We hope that we have learned from the mistakes of the first "Bull Moose." Primarily, we do not want to abandon the party that brought us Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan. Their leadership - from Lincoln's opposition to slavery to Reagan's victory in the Cold War - helped make America great.

Thanks Ken,
Now I understand why so many republicans are deserting the Bushites.
