View Full Version : The track I just can't beat

Just curious if anyone else has this phenomonon. Most tracks I go through streaks of highs and lows. Some tracks I seem to do well on a steady basis. But no matter what I do I can't pick a winner at Turf Paradise. I've tried different methods, different speed and pace figures, nothing helps me at this track. I have been smart enough to stop playing it with real money, but even doing mind bets, I can't win (no wonder I seem to be losing my mind).

Does anyone else have that track you just can't beat?

I have very little luck at Calder, I rarely ever bet it anymore.

Fairplex and that bullring's unusual placement of the starting gate.

Factor in horses and a jockey colony not accustomed to the tight turns,
and that ruins what otherwise would be a solid play on a mile track.

You may get your wish, It will probably be a Mile track next year.

Turfway finally came to end yesterday---no more pain like yesterday at Turfway--seconditis there--cannot buy a winner TPX!

All the best,

My kryptonite is Charles Town. I couldn't pick a winner there even if I hit the "all" button. Calder, Gulfstream and Penn National are other places where it is super hard for me to make a buck.

I do however like Turf Paradise.

Hoosier Park... Sometimes I watch horses wire the field there and look at the horse for 5 minutes trying to figure out one even minute sign that I missed... Most of the time I cannot find it.

Kentucky Downs. I'm swearing off that track for good. Hopefully they will never get more than 4 dates a year. I also could mention Del Mar and Woodbine but other than a real big stakes, I just completely avoid those tracks. I saw some mention Mountaineer; every time I see the track it seems like its sloppy so I never play it.

Mountaineer....

I used to be frustrated with Mountaineer until I changed my mindset playing there.. I realized that I may only hit 1-2 races there on a given night.. But that's all you need. I may be completely off the board in the other 8, but hitting one nice $90 exacta makes the night..

I don't miss too many races there at the wire, it's feast or famine..

My list would be the same as I posted in the "tracks visited" thread.

I used to streaks at a cxouple of tracks until I realized the only reason I was streaking is because some tracks had high cincidence of variables as to slow dirt or turf track speed, jockey riding styles, amount of shippers, and drastic trainer maneuvers.
The tracks I found less streaky were "speed-favoring (Magna) tracks" and non-major tracks.
I have always done decent at KY tracxks because I like best overall horse irregardless of any kind of speed figures.

Worst: Lone Star and Turfway are my two 'banned' tracks. Lone Star was particularly anomalous because even my turf routers performed poorly, and I'm strong almost everywhere else in grass races at 7.5f and longer.

I should probably add the LaD dirt surface to my banned list. (Yet that is one of my best turf courses.)

Now that we've talked about our dogs, how about your favourite tracks? I'll start:

-- Anyone turf course except LS and, to a lesser extent, Arlington

-- On dirt: Philly, Penn National, Sunland (except the state-bred races), Ellis, Solano, and Calder in December only.

Besides Calder, I struggle with Colonial And Philadelphia Park.

My worst, year after year, is DMR. Beat it only once since keeping records back in 1989. And that was the year I had to quit before the season was over.

Based on my handicapping, I've come to the conclusion that I can't handicap a one-horse race at Calder. Times, the basis of my handicapping, mean absolutely NOTHING. You see a horse with a lifetime-best time of 1:39 for a mile at the conditions beat a horse with a lifetime best of 1:36 at the conditions fairly frequently compared to other tracks. I just don't have a clue.

Pimlico, but I keep trying. Why I don't know. I know I just want to beat it, but in the meantime I"m losing money. Should swallow my pride and avoid, but can't. Still a challenge, that's why.

Actually, I hope not.

I'd rather have them start Oak Tree a bit earlier than suffer with the Fairplex product. http://www.hoc-board.de/phpBB2/smilies/zwinker/zwinker.gif
The Southern California product needs to be strengthened and the Fairplex meet
doesn't add all that much as far as prime wagering opportunities
or a large amount of national interest.

Think of it - if the CHRB reduced all those California fair dates by 50%,
Northern California actually might be able to present some palatable cards.
The entry box would benefit tremendously in lieu of some of these fairs.
