It's not like this is a new subject, or a radical idea. Change in the sport of horse racing has been talked about for a long time now. It has also been written off or ignored by the people that can make it happen. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result. Horse racing has this down to a science.
When a failed drug test marred one of the sports show case events, the Breeders Cup, the reaction was to ban steroids. But, that did not really happen. Instead of getting rid of the drug, they allowed the drug to be used, but just not at the track. And if a trainer is caught by failing a drug test, don't worry, just pay a fine, name your assistant trainer as the "new" trainer and carry on with your business.
Having a rash of breakdowns at your track? Don't worry, do your best to ignore the problem and it will go away. Until PETA, or a journalist starts making noise. Then you should announce a lot of changes, that will happen in the future. Maybe put up a new tent and call it a equine medical facility, that will satisfy the public and you can go about your business.
Better yet, we should disqualify the winner of our highest profile event, the Kentucky Derby. By doing this we can show the casual bettor just how we treat our customers. The betting public learned that the rules of horse racing are written for the protection of the owners and trainers. They also learned that their money can disappear even though they did what they were supposed to do, and bet the best horse that won the race.
If the leaders of this sport can not see what has happened, then we will watch the decline of this sport. But if the leaders of the NYRA, TSG, CDI, and other tracks around the nation can put aside your egos, and your little pissing matches, you can make some history by changing this sport. You can do this together, but not as you are now.
