With the release of the tenth year of EID info here is a look at the cumulative figures for the various track/surface combinations from tracks which make their data public. The chart excludes the California Fair circuit and things like Aqueduct's Inner Dirt or the tracks/surfaces at SA, DMR, HOL, HOO, and KEE which don't exist anymore. Arlington's Polytrack figures are a deduction as it is the only synthetic track that doesn't publicly release data (EID's "all synthetic" total - sum of publicly release tracks = Arlington). Darker colors indicate a second surface of that time at that track (i.e. Belmont and Saratoga's inner turf and Santa Anita's Hillside turf).

What are the headings? Can't see them.
Looks liked the poly tracks have by far the most breakdowns?

Sorry about the headers, Tom. They're lengthy on the spreadsheet and compressed for space.

Track, # of Starts, # of fatalities, Fatality rate per 1000, Rank by fatality rate.

Sort is ascending fatality rate so lowest is at the top (Woodbine turf with 0.52 fatal injuries per 1000 starts).

TY!

So, in 10 years, Saratoga has had 21, same as SA the last couple of months.
And 95 in the 10 years~!

And Poly certainly has a lot, contrary to some posts here.

Interesting.

See, this is the kind of stuff Federal regulations should be forcing - an annual review of this and formal corrective actions to reduce the numbers, with timelines, submitted to a regulatory body for review, with license to operate on the line.

These ten year numbers might indicate the use of increased drug use in race horses. ?

This chart is a pretty damning indictment of dirt racing and especially the racing in SoCal.

Even the TURF racing in SoCal is the deadliest around. Wow.

So, one has to wonder, maybe it is NOT the racing surface?

Would anyone have guessed ten years ago that Indiana Grand would be one of the safest dirt tracks going? Kudos to the folks there and at Saratoga.
