Thanks for the heads up, both my wife and I entered. Looks simple enough, and you can't beat the price!

Sure. Trying to think of the optimal strategy on this one. You certainly can't go for the moon in all 3 picks as you have to hit the board at least once to move on. Can't decide if it would be better to play safe on one and go long on 2 or safe on 2 and long on 1. Maybe even alternate between both depending on the races they select.

Day 1 10/1
4th Race Stormy Roman
Like his back class in the G3s. Linesmakers seem to be going with speed here in Cottage and Tam's Terms. I expect the course to be a little moist with the rains, so figuring that's going to chew them up a bit.
7th Race Pies Prospect
I love Eddington, but he's starting to look like a money burner in regards to win betting. Solid underneath, but a bad play on top. Pies is the only other one in the field with both higher level back class and quality speed figs. Early speed duel may happen here too, which I think he can take advantage of
10th Race Commanding Creek
A year's layoff, but he is now 4 and going to play for that increased maturity factor. His figs before he left were better than the rest of the field and his works leading up to the race are consistant. Probably the longest shot of my plays but he may get hammered down before all said and done.
Free PPs for the contest races if you sign up, just an FYI.
Contest selections for myself, wife:
4: Megoman, Stormy Roman
7: Eddington, Pollard's Vision
10: Orpington, Quietly Quick

I'd have a look anyway as I read that Pletcher was leaning that way. I hate getting saddled with chalk when your pick scratches out

Day 2 10/2
Winnings: $27.60
Pretty good start. Stormy Roman just misses with a determined drive in the stretch and Pies Prospect holds off Eddington in the Pegasus. Man, that race ran just like I envisioned it. Wish I could do that more often. In the 10th, Commanding Creek gets a head in front in the stretch, but is overcome with about 70 yds to the wire. Fitness from layoff may have caught up with him, but a good run and will look for him in his next. My picks for today
Race 3: Dontcloseyoureyes. Real mediocre maiden here. Expect Daredevil Bull to get hammered in wagering here, but his big figs came in maiden claimers. This horses last was pretty much at this distance and was a good effort, being right on the lead before fading a couple lengths by the wire.
Race 8: Chirmoya: My longshot for the day. This horse was running very well earlier this year but had a fairly poor summer. She'll hit the board for sure if she can run back to anything close to that G2 effort where she beat a recently returned Storm Flag Flying. At 20-1 on the morning line, she's a must bet for me.
Race 9: Pady's Daisy: Going to eat chalk on this one. Pletcher 2yo with graded turf experience and by far best speed figs. Looks like you can't pick a whole entry, but you can be scratched into one if the entry is the favorite.

My Day 2
Bankroll from day 1 is $30. I had Orpington who won the 10th, and I had the place horses in the other 2.
Today
Race 3
Dont want to pick him, but daredevil bull has figs that are better than the rest of the field.
Race 8
Umpateeble seems to be cycling upward and his best puts him a possibility to win.
Race 9
Like OTM Al, got to go with Padys Daisy. Just has a class edge, and fig edge.
OTM Al
10-04-2004, 09:52 PM
Day 3: 10/5
Winnings $42.00
Not terrible second day, but could have been better. Dontcloseyoureyes edged out by 23-1 shot. Chirmoya scratched out so wasn't sure who I got, Electrical Carlita or the 1 horse (don't remember his name) as the tote was showing the 1 entry and the 7 as co-faves.....bet on the 1 but was stuck with the 7 who finished well back. Paddy's Daisy was the dead bang freebee I thought she'd be, so a first, a second and an off the board again
Race 4: Banshee Connection
Stared at this for a long time. This is a long race so had to discard a couple on showing a bit too much early. Settled on Banshee Connection in the end as I think he may give some value here. Crete will get hammered due to Bravo and I've seen him fail at low odds too many times. Creek's Shore just looks a little fishy dropping off a much higher claim price after a win.
Race 5: Kalookan Lady
Lot of speed here. Her last on turf looks like a mistake so she's back to the dirt. What caught my eye was her 8/9 run in the high level claimer at Saratoga. Looks a lot better than the recent tops of the others.
Race 8: Ten Treasures
Looks like I'm eating chalk again and he is vulnerable. His back class just looks a bit better than the rest. Probably wouldn't bet real money on him unless he was above 4-1, which he isn't going to be, but none of the others stand out to me.

Well Jimmy, it looks like we bought the farm on that one. Banshee Connection pressed the frontrunner way too early and faded late, Kalookan Lady couldn't handle the duel up front and stopped, and Ten Treasures never fired at all. My girlfriend is still alive........I will hear about this.
Good luck to everyone still alive. Let us know how you are doing
Tough day for me as well, but I scratched into chalk hitting the board in the 8th, so still alive. My wife's horses won a couple today, I'd never hear the end of it either.

I think the key to this contest, because it's so long, is hitting the board every day. Forget about price.
I'm still alive too (sheesh, it's only 3 days). 1 winner today and about $40 grand total.

Last couple of days I have not been able to connect with any of my shots. Because today's card was run during the day I had to make my picks last night. I did like one of the AE in the 8th race - Theartfulduchman but did not use him because I was not sure he would get in. Of course he won and paid $12.00. Good luck to all.

I just went back to look at your numbers for the 2 winners for races at 10/15 at Med. I see how you can select oliver street in the 10th.
But in the 8th it looked wide open (even if you play against the obvious 1 and the 8) how did you land on the 7 , he was a definite contender, just wonder how you made the final determination.
thanks,
David
Hey Sam,
What led me to Dr. K was that his running style. Lots of the other horses had competitive numbers as well as you mention. But, looking at those horses, I saw a lot of E, EP, and P type horses, and they had all been earning the good numbers in slow paced races. No way I could see a slow pace last night with so many of the good horses preferring to be up fairly close. The only horse who had been running fast early was Host, and I was pretty confident tossing him coming off a six month layoff and facing pressure if he chose to go early.

I reached a bit today, but not just to reach, I think they are better than the favorites. No ML favorites, one horse 20-1 on the ML...time will tell.

Still alive. I was lucky on Saturday. I had to put my picks in on Friday. Forecast was calling for rain and I hoped that the 8th race would be taken off the turf. I picked Cologny as MTO. Race remained on the turf and I was given the post time favorite who promptly ran up the track. My pick in the 5th race kept me alive.
Slipped back down to No. 27. Only 142 still alive. Good luck to all that are still alive. Going to have to swing for the fences soon!
