Dan, my friend, I hate to break this to you.
This is tax avoidance and conservatives.
They go together like mustard on a hot dog.
It's a pastime they're proud of. Earns bragging rights.

I'm afraid it's going to take a bigger stake through the heart.

It must have all been legal if the I.R.S. could not find a way to take more of the family fortune. Even if he cheated, I have no problem with it. I think death taxes are ridiculously high for large estates. Why anyone would think 55% of Fred Trump's estate should go to the government is beyond me.

The Times’s (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/10/02/us/politics/donald-trump-tax-schemes-fred-trump.html)findings raise new questions about Mr. Trump’s refusal to release his income tax returns, breaking with decades of practice by past presidents. According to tax experts, it is unlikely that Mr. Trump would be vulnerable to criminal prosecution for helping his parents evade taxes, because the acts happened too long ago and are past the statute of limitations. There is no time limit, however, on civil fines for tax fraud.

Isn't it amazing the RESOURCES the NYT and other media organizations absolutely POUR into investigating Trump to the ends of the earth? Vetting him like no other, both before and AFTER the election...every single day until he's out of office...

It's funny, with all her scandals of the past, present and future, her health scares, etc. etc., the NYT never went to the ends of the earth to uncover every little innuendo ever uttered about Hillary...same with Obama...

It shows I'm not putting up with the outrageous double standards any longer.

If the IRS had a problem with Trump's tax returns or those of his father, then they should have done something about it.

How much was the Trump organization, either pre or post-DJT running the joint, fined by the IRS over the years? How many years did Donald or his dad spend in prison?

After all, this is BOMBSHELL news. How come the IRS missed this BOMBSHELL?

They didn't know who Trump was? They didn't know TRUMP was a huge name in NYC Real Estate for decade upon decade? They didn't know all the money flowing through the organization? They didn't investigate these returns more than, say, the accountant who pulls down 80 grand a year?

****ing comical.

Pretty simple, actually. Of course, if you believe there is no good whatsoever, then you get like what we have here...

Some people are professional outrage artists...everything is an outrage and everything is a bombshell.

We see it with every president, depending on what side you fall on.

Only difference here though is, you have a YUGE portion of the media siding against.

Happened under GWB as well, but not nearly as intense, which is saying something.

GWB was a drunk, a coke fiend, a total moron, a failed businessman, the man behind 9/11, a racist, etc. etc. etc.

the deal with the casino chips happens all the time. the most common occurrence like it is when someone shorts a stock like Enron for example. they sell it short at say $10, the account that shorted the stock was given the $10 per share, the stock gets delisted from a big exchange and gets listed on a pink sheet. the shorter never covers his stock and has no tax consequence until he does cover or the stock gets completely delisted. sometimes this takes many years and the taxes can be delayed that long, meanwhile, the person that shorted the stock has collected all his money. this also happened with Penn Central Railroad.

Who will save our country from the horrors it's currently suffering?

Everything is a pendulum.

Democrats at this point.

The right swung in and helped right the country during and after Obama... but its tacked into this weird white nationalist zone.

It will swing back. The Republican Party is going to get nuked. Its going to lose part of its "family values" "wholesomeness" appeal and end up having to swing to the left more to pick up votes. It already did that with Trump to a large extent. (Trump and Bernie are nearly identical on trade... not that anyone was paying attention.)

Social conservatism is about all but dead at this point. I'm cool with that but the evangelical wing is going to start fracturing.

I meant what I said.
Conservatives always applaud tax avoidance - unless a liberal is doing it.
They will stay quiet about tax evasion. Not condemning it - unless a liberal is accused of it.

Prime example - regular poster in PA-OTG (and a former member of law enforcement)
gets outwardly giddy when someone avoids paying taxes.
Yet, he would never chastise a fellow conservative for tax evasion.
A liberal accused of the same? Go ahead - take the free square.

A former member of law enforcement.
This is at the heart of what's wrong in this country.

I never understood the liberal logic of why the wealthy should pay a higher percentage in personal income taxes than a middle class person. They don't get anymore bang for their buck than a poor person and probably use even less public services. Mr You Didn't Build That Obama would blather on about how their wealth was built with help from the government.

If you read the article, you will see that Yes, they do get more public services/govt. loans/govt subsidized rents than your average poor person(middle class). For instance in one case alone, Fred(& Donald) received a govt. loan(interest free) to the tune of 7 or 9 million dollars. This was essentially 90% of the total cost of a new building, after which Fred(not Donald) paid the balance. How did they get this? they said the new apartment building would be for senior citizens, or the elderly or some such class. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the genius of Fred Trump, he made most NY real estate developers look like pikers. Donald was trained by a master IMO.
His creation of the All County Building & Maintenance Company was also pure creative financial genius, albeit fraudulent. Then by claiming maintenance costs that were artificially jacked up 40 to 100%, he was "allowed" to raise rents in government subsidized rental properties. All County Bldg & Maint. Co. were naturally owned by Donald, and siblings. Again, getting more help from the govt. to increase their incomes/wealth. I'm just scratching the surface. To be clear, I'm against the 55% death taxes in all cases. I've seen how it decimates farms transferring to the children.

The NYT piece has the evidence...

Its literally right ****ing there how they fooled the IRS.

How about the Trump U case?

Maybe you're one of those people that doesn't buy the whole "I only got a million from daddy" story...

Fine where the hell were you when I was arguing with Fast, Reckless, Showmethewire, CH etc. about that bullshit origin story?

How great is a businessman with near limitless financial support who had to file bankruptcy on effing CASINO's not once... but four times or was it five?

Its more bullshit... its more lies... and its more "we were just following orders" from the PAOT crowd.

You are just annoyed because many people now know how clueless you are and are regularly telling you so.

You are just annoyed because all those Trump hating arguments you bored us with during the historic Summer of 2015, the Campaign of 2016, the Election of 2017 and the Make America Great Again years of 2017-18 (and onward) has been proven totally wrong and you've been met with derision and laughter.

You may have conned your playmates in kindergarten into believing you know what you're talking about, but no one around here is buying any of it. You've proven it to us all by yourself on just how little you really do know.

Now, about those bankruptcies ... in the past 10 years and more both Apple and Google have bought hundreds if not thousands of smaller companies, many little known to the investing public. Both companies have also shut down a big number of them -- bankrupt them, so to speak -- with little fan-fare.

People in business shut down, bankrupt and take losses a lot more often than one cares to know. It's part of taking risks and doing business. For every You Tube or Instagram, hundreds fell to the wayside never to be heard from again.

If it annoys you that Trump bankrupt companies, go cry in your warm formula.

As for the NYT piece... means nothing. Trump has been the most well-known public figure in New York City for decades. Real Estate is the toughest, most highly regulated and the IRS and local tax authorities go over these real estate firms' businesses with a fine tooth comb. More so than any other business in NYC. It's a highly-leveraged business in general to begin with so scrutiny is of the highest order.

No one gets away with cheating the tax man. And no smart businessman even tries to beat the tax people too. They could shut you down in a New York minute. Plus if Trump needed to borrow a few billion for a major project do you really think Chase, Goldman or Citibank will lend them a nickle if there is a major IRS fraud lawsuit hanging over Trump's head? No way. Yet Trump had little trouble raising money after his well-known crash in the 1990s. Think things through once in a while.

Using 'loopholes' is not a crime but the word 'loophole' should be a crime when used as a pejorative. They are business advantages taken of which the tax code gives them. If you have a mortgage, the property tax you pay that gets some sort of deduction is a 'loophole' too, for example. If you ran for public office someone could say the same thing you're saying about the loopholes that Trump has taken, and others. Do everyday people believe they are tax dodgers if they deduct some mortgage expense? I'd say not.

The bottom line really ... is that Trump lives in your head and you're making a fool of yourself over this hatred of him. But don't stop by any means. We all need the laughs.

A New Yorker reporter who covers the president’s many financial scandals revealed Monday how deep the “criminal enterprise” ran by Fred Trump went — and why Donald Trump could soon be in huge trouble.

Although the New York Times‘s report analyzing decades and hundreds of thousands of documents of Trump family dealings uncovered massive tax fraud, “the story’s not over,” writer Adam Davidson told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.
