As bad as it was, at least Espinoza wasn't killed and no other horses were hurt. :(

Four year old colt with, what, six starts?

And he drops dead of an "apparent" heart attack?

A necropsy should be performed on the horse to determine in what manner his heart was defective and how such defect went undetected....

Lifetime record was 9-4-2-1 with $375,100 in earnings... He certainly wasn't overraced.

Then again some Thoroughbred families have a stronger genetic tendency towards heart failure. Hennessy and his grandson Scat Daddy immediately come to mind.

I took a quick look only at Horseracing Nation's record on him.

I'm just really sick of young horses dropping dead of apparent undiagnosed heart conditions!!

True, as much as these horses are worth and the fact that other lives are at stake when these events occur, you'd think preventing/minimizing such tragedies would be a priority.

Could be just a heart attack and bad luck but we all know who the "Move'm Up Guys" are.

Excerpt:

"We have limited ability to prosecute out-of-competition testing with current regulations. ... In reality, horse racing does not have a robust anti-doping program," Arthur said. "It can be best described as a medication control program. Medication control is very important and necessary. We not only need to test for performance-enhancing drugs, as is the focus in human sport testing, but for drugs that impact horse welfare and horse and jockey safety. ... Horse racing must also deal with performance-hindering drugs that could be used to stop a horse from its best performance, which is not generally considered a problem in human sport.

Arthur continued to point out the need for out-of-competition testing because "races are won in training," where he said doping is most effective.

Sad to admit that this was my first thought. .... Was he loaded up?

This sport will not ever grow....I'm sorry but it will not. Those who can clean it up refuse to do so, and this BloodHorse piece is a perfect case in point as to why.

The safety of jockeys, exercise riders, stable staff is a good enough argument for out of competition testing. **** if steroids/other drugs are "cheating," that is secondary.

The higher up a spinal fracture the worse it can be. A C-3 if that is accurate is almost at the top. That qualifies as a break in a neck bone, real scary, I am keeping my fingers crossed he recovers as best as possible.

1st thing I thought of, too.

Last time the horse worked was July 13th.

a work only every 10 days or so when you are prepping for a big G1 stakes race is kinda not working the horse very hard.

Seems like a horse this young must have had thumper problems?

what I meant to say is "developed" thumper problems, cuz let's face it, a $325K or so purchase, insurer isn't going to give you insurance on horse with a heart defect.

So....

Please keep this guy in your prayers, too. He's had a tough recuperation, as are all spinal cord injuries, but is off the ventilator and learning to walk again.

Many people do not know that in 2000, St. Juilien became the first African-American jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby in 79 years

https://www.paulickreport.com/tag/marlon-st-julien/

didn't mean to steal espinosa topic, but didn't see a st. julien topic so thought I'd add him in here for well wishers.

I am happy for him, but also worried. These guys don't have an exit strategy for their chosen profession, even the high profile ones like Victor that have made good money. I know they love the job, but he got a clear sign that it was time to retire. I hope nothing even worse happens to him as he resumes his career.

just because you break your neck doesn't mean you will have a tough rehab or limited ability or any of that. It all depends on the break and many things involved. One of my closest friends broke through both sides of his C3 racing motorcycles. Had two screws put in. Very little rehab. Six weeks later was back shingling roofs and eight weeks after back riding bikes. That was twelve years ago and has no ill effects from it. So many variables involved to determine their post op fate.

In regards to horses having heart attacks, it's nothing new. Many have died from that over the years. You just hear about them now due to the internet. Prior to the internet, if you weren't reading the racing forum you didn't know about it.

Wow!

cleared to ride...I always found that funny. It likely went like this

"look, your bones are all healed but I strongly advise you against riding again"

Thanks doc!
