6/19 Ascot Selections

1430--Queen Anne S.---3 Benbatl---wisest of wise guy hosses. was great in Meydan and trainer has won this race many, many times.

1505--Coventry S.---23 The Irish Rover---OBrien second string is a really, really good horse.

1540--Kings Stand S.---10 Lady Aurelia--Last years easy winner loves the track.

1620--St James Palace S.---7 Tip to win--out to prove his Guineas 2nd was no fluke; Beat the derby winner Masar. Thats good enough form for me.

1700--Ascot S.---15 Stratum--had a great prep in Ireland for this; set up for big run today by champion trainer mullins

1735--Wolferton S.---2 Monarchs Glen--hard hoss to figure out; what happened at Meydan? willing to overlook that one to get a price.

1st at Ascot 81-1 in the USA pool

Big overlay.
33-1 starting price in the UK.

That's where the value is in the US pool on occasion.
High priced long shots. Any horse under 10-1 is usually
poor value due to the takeout. Routinely, a 3-1 shot
will pay 5-2, or less.

Trainer of the winner, Eve Johnson Houghton, is from
one of the blue blood families of UK racing. Her father,
Fulke, trained some of the great Charles Englehard
horses in the late 1960s. He retired in 2006.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulke_Johnson_Houghton

Found it hard to believe that this was Eve's first Royal Ascot winner.
Good for her.

1430--Norfolk S.---5 Land Force--OBrien strikes again

1505--Hampton Court S.---9 National Army---The sky is the limit for this son of Dubawi

1540--Ribblesdale S.---1 Wild illusion--G1 winner been a bit disappointing this term looks to get back on track with drop in class.

1620--Gold Cup---two hoss race. Box 2 Order of St George and 9 Stradivarius
in Exacta. Very difficult to choose between the two. Head and withers above the rest here

1700--Britannia S.---5 First Contact--Bumping up to 8F for his acid test.

Well done America as Shang Shang Shang wins the first. Good to see an International winner here. I'm going to have a small bet in the Gold Cup. I personally don't think it's a shoe in for Stradivarius or Order of St George and think there could be another international winner in Vazirabad. Had an each way bet (that's two bets, a win bet at full odds and a win,2nd and 3rd place at 1/5th odds). Got 11/2 so even a 2nd or 3rd will get me my money back with a very small profit and a win will be a bonus.

I have to say I really enjoy these 6 race cards. I find that I am enjoying them more, betting more and looking forward to the next day.

Seems like on our big days I am exhausted by the 9th, the feature isnt until the 12th and oh by the way we tacked on 2 allowances in the 13th and 14th.

Ascot has it right.

Handicapping each Royal Ascot race takes a lot of time. Without running lines or speed figures, the only way to do this is watch replays of past races.

I know most of the horses and trainers (Thanks to my friend Dave who is a wizz at euro racing, he also taught me how to handicap euros).

I lost my dependance on speed figs.

I watch the races on TVG every day available.

and I bet the exchange on euro racing.

Just a couple of bets at Ascot for me today.

4.20. I think this is actually quite an open race and at the odds I have gone for Coeur De Beaute at 12/1 each way first three places. She finished a neck second to Teppal last time but is double the odds.

5.35. I like longshots in these and Sir Chauvelin could run a decent race back up in trip from las time. At 40/1 a decent each way bet.

This horse is well meant.
Trainer Richard Fahey won this race before with a horse he rated lower.

Huge field and questionable draw in stall 27, though, so he's no cinch.
Still, hoping for 10-1+ on the US tote.

So the bookies have the option of declaring a horse a non starter and refunding on an individual basis due to an unfair chance. I have seen some refund on certain horses while others do not.

Following twitter and watching people get absolutely livid they wont refund the massively backed Harry Angel after refunding a long shot earlier today for much less of an issue.

I guess the beat goes on everywhere. At least they have several people to plead a case with and yell at. We get none of that lol.

What a great meet...look forward to it every year. Did pretty well this time. I avoid those 30 horse fields and generally stick to the Group races.
Old school handicapping using class and preference of ground (good, soft etc etc) did the trick for me this year.
Also avoid the 2yr old racing. Not enough form for me to go on.
Can't wait until next year

No, the bookies cannot declare a horse a non starter, only the stewards can do that officially and in that case the bookies would have made what is called a rule 4 deduction on winning bets so they can balance their books. They can of course decide to refund stakes if they want to be generous and get a bit of good publicity (to pretend they're actually nice people) but that would have given them a huge loss (some would have been hundreds of thousands of pounds) on the race as they would have had to pay out full odds on the winner and not been allowed to make a rule 4 deduction. There was a stewards enquiry after the race and the jockey said he did indicate to the starter that everything was OK and he should start the race. No fault on anyone.

The case earlier in the week was different as it was a long shot and wouldn't affect the bookies margins too much and I understand it was only one or two bookies that did it. The unfortunate thing is that those getting angry are just talking through their pockets, it would have been nice if a few more of them cared about the welfare of the horse. You place a bet and take your chance, these things happen in racing.
