My computer (Hp 800mhz-pentium III-256 meg RAM) is running Windows XP pro. Within the last month, it has started freezing up while on the internet. It happening irregularly and unpredictably. I use SpyHunter software and McAfee Scan to check for viruses etc.
The SpyHunter works normally, However, when I run the McAfee, it freezes up. I bought the McAfee after the freezing problem started, so I don't suspect it as the problem.
Any suggestions or ideas.
Thanks fellas.

You got a virus in your system. Best solution is to format C and re-install your operating system. I suspect "Sub-Seven" trojan has been infected your system.

Bruddah:
Before going to the extreme of re-formatting and re-installing, you may take a look at the following site and see if it will help you.
http://www.symantec.com/product/index_homecomp.html
About mid-page you'll find Symantec Security Check. A click here will place you in the virus check area where you can download, run, and identify the virus/trojan. Once identified you can then download the "tool" to "clean" that particular virus/trojan.
If I recall correctly your anti-virus software should be disabled before downloading. In your case, maybe an uninstall of McAfee is appropriate until after the Symantec virus-check and fix are run.
Make sure the McAfee antivirus software is updated with the new virus definitions upon completion of the re-install or cleaning.
Good luck.

I wen to the site you suggested. Dowloaded the virus scan. All 42k files were fine. It showed no virus.
I still have the freeze problem. Could it be not enough RAM?

Did you try Restore?
you could restore the system to last month, before the problem started to appear. You may have to reinstall some programs that you installed after that date.........

I still have the freeze problem. Could it be not enough RAM? Hmmmmmmmm, no viri as per Symantec. That has to be good news.
I'm still running/learning W2k; so, XPpro is beyond me. There are many heavyweights on this board, and I'm sure one will step up very shortly.
Concerning memory, with XPpro.....IMO, the more the merrier, but I think it will run w/256mb.

Bruddah :
First of all the software you have " SpyHunter " is a BAD
Software, here is a link were you can read about it your self......http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#products. You should try using "Ad-Aware "or "SpyBot Search & Destroy". I use these two and SpySweeper and other security products. If you need to know more about ..How to protect your computer from viruses & spywares send me a email I will gladly help you.

start "run" type in "cleanmgr.exe" hit enter.
Clean up the c: drive
restart:
open your browser ( I assume explorer) go to "tools" menu
click on "internet options" in the resulting window click the "delete files" button right in the middle of the window and clean out the temporary internet files. This may take a minute, and it could hang your computer up completely. If so, turn it off if it hangs for 7 minutes or more. Restart and do it again.
this is just a start.
After all of this............. Boot up fresh and hit
"ctrl-Alt-Delete" click on "processes" and post how many items are running (it is listed at the bottom left of the processes window)
Post and let us know how many are running.
.............and the beat goes on....................

There's a useful site I found called PCPitstop that runs your machine thru a bunch of diagnostics and gives you back a report on what's good, what's indifferent, and what's bad. For the "what's bad" it offers some suggestions about what to do.
If you're a computer nerfball (like me) it's not a bad place to get some free advice.

You might have a corrupted video driver. Check to see if there is an updated version of the driver. I ran into the same problem a number of years ago. I don't have the address, but you can do a search for drivers. There is one site that is free. Also check with MS.

1. I eliminated "SpyHunter" software per Rwahi1
2. I have followed JustRalph's advice to the letter and completed all the tasks outlined....I now have 34 processes running.
3. After writing this, I will visit pcpitstop.com for diagnostics.
ha ha ha....my cadillac doesn't get this much tender love and care.:)
