Not really a shocker, since it had been quite a while since he last ran:

Candy Ride was the best horse I've seen since Spectacular Bid. He was AWESOME! I have replayed the images of the 2003 Pacific Classic in my mind a dozen times. He toyed with Medalia D'Oro, jogging next to him while Medalia was full out and then pulled away with ease to set a course record.

I will watch for his babies and hope they have a touch of his brilliance.

...and not a touch of his unsoundness.

Same with War Emblem........ if you recall several potential buyers passed him up because of chips in the knee. Baffert didn't care and advised the Prince to buy him. I think Baffert saw the short term value of the horse.........and that may be the actual best way to look at it today.

I wish some of these champion horses were as sound as some of these 9 YO 3500 claimers at Penn National

Here's another one. But this one is retiring at age 8. Still was pretty good in his old age:

This one was an 8YO NY bred gelding, probably a prime candidate to wind up as a 5K claimer at FL in a few years , too bad.

In his prime, he was running with some of the best handicap horses in the country. He ran third in the Whitney and Woodward, and won the Meadowlands Cup. He knocked heads with the best, and ran right with them. Thanks for the memories, Gander!

Hi,

That 3rd in the Whitney brings back memories... Bubbles dragged me to Saratoga that day... in a 10 race card, I hit all 3 Daily Doubles, 9 exactas, and 2 trifectas... the 2nd of which came when Gander put in a hell of an effort to come on for 3rd in the Whitney (this after Bubbles laughed at me when I included the horse in my Tri box... LOL)... not the most money I've ever won at the track, but certainly the most consistent day I ever had... and won enough to finance the rest of the summer at the Spa and put new struts on the car to boot.
