Saratoga announced it "lost" $5 million in cancelling the last race on Travers Day and moving up the time of the Travers.

A million lost in handle from the cancelled 12th and last? Not bloody likely. Most people are watching the ceremonies or bugging out, there are no doubles, P3s, etc. to start. And just where is the rest from? Nothing was refunded; consolations
were paid for the P6, for example.

Handle from the Travers was $2.2 million. This was going to be $6 million? Don't think so. And of course, holding a meet upstate in August means always perfect racing weather. Two slightly differently worded articles:

This is on the order of saying that I have lost millions because I am not an Indian and do not have a casino.

By my rudimentary calculations a $4 mil loss in handle is well within reason.

In 2003 the WPS pool for the finale on Travers day was $900K. The exacta pool was $770K. The tri pool was $600K. And the super pool was $300K.

That's well over $2.5 mil lost right there.

The WPS pool on the 2003 Travers was $3.2 mil. On the 2004 Travers it was $2.2 mil. There's another million. (It can be argued that there was a smaller crowd there this year -- but comparing stats from the previous races on the card, the Fourstardave and the King's Bishop, shows that there wasn't much of a disparity there from 2003 to 2004).

And the exacta pool was about half a million less this year.

So $2.5 mil from the nightcap, plus $1 mil from the Travers WPS, plus $.5 mil from the exacta pool. We're in the neighborhood of $4 mil right there.
